Sports Teams from New York Worth Knowing

New York is one of the most iconic cities in the US, welcoming cultures from around the world for over 200 years.  It has also been the largest city in the US since 1790.

With the most people from the most diverse backgrounds, not to mention being a competitive city in every respect, it’s understandable that New York has fostered some of the greatest teams in sports history.

These teams have given New Yorkers something to rally behind in tough times, and some teams are responsible for being beacons of hope in the country’s darkest times.  While some are more successful than others, New York demands the best talent and continues to bring the best athletes together.

New York Giants

One of the first teams to join the NFL in 1925, the New York Giants are currently the only team that remains from the original five.  While they only have four Super Bowl championship wins, the team actually holds 8 championship wins since they pre-date the Super Bowl, which only started in 1966.

The Giants have maintained one of the longest-running rivalries in sports with the Philadelphia Eagles which dates back to 1933.  The proximity makes it a convenient rivalry, but they also play in the same league division, the National Football Conference East division.  The two teams have played every year since the Eagles were founded in 1933, and the rivalry between these two hard-working, competitive cities is always a sight to see.

If you want to play for the Giants, you can join the waiting list.  If the list of people wanting to play on a team is any measure of how devoted the fanbase is, the Giant’s waiting list is rumored to be over 135,000 strong, so you still have a chance.

New York Yankees

It’s almost a requirement for the Yankees to make any list of top sports teams with their unbelievable 27 World Series wins since their first win in 1927.  The runner up, the St. Louis Cardinals, only have 11 World Series wins.

The team began in 1901 in Baltimore as the Orioles, believe it or not.  They moved to New York after a big of an argument with the New York Giants (now San Francisco Giants) in 1903, and they became the New York Yankees in 1913.

Now, currently one of the most valuable sports teams in the world, 8.5 million fans still come to watch the Yankees dominate in person (at their new stadium) as well as on television. If you’re a fan of  Yankees New York sports betting sites 2021 might be worth checking as well as they have decent offers on most of the upcoming games this year.

Just looking at the world-renowned players coming from Yankees is enough to see why it’s such a legendary team.  Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and the Core Four led by Derek Jeter – these names have led not just the team but also the country in some cases.

The Great Depression hit the country hard, and most baseball teams, including the Yankees, had to make adjustments to make sure people could still come to watch ball games.  With Babe Ruth’s reign coming to an end, Joe DiMaggio stepped up to inspire New Yorkers in the 1930s.  The whole club took pay cuts to keep ticket prices low to make sure people could still come watch.

New York Knicks

The full name not commonly used anymore is the New York Knickerbockers.  The Knicks were a founding team of the Basketball Association of America in 1946, which very soon became the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949.

Their home court at Madison Square Garden is the oldest stadium in the NBA and doubles as one of the most sought-after venues for any athlete or performance artist.  The team has played at Madison Square Garden in New York City since it opened in its current form in 1968. Despite only claiming two NBA championships, the team is still one of the best shows in sports.

New York Mets

It’s hard to believe that New York has two baseball teams parked right next to each other, but they’ve made it work.  The New York Mets are in a different league, the National League East, than the Yankees, who play in the American League East.  While the Yankees are perhaps one of the most successful teams ever, the Mets are held as the favorite team of fans who live on Long Island since their home stadium of Citi Field (formerly Shea Stadium) in Queens.

The Mets are home to several Hall of Famers, including Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan, Casey Stengel, Mike Piazza, and Tom Seaver.

New York Rangers

Sharing Madison Square Garden with the Knicks, the New York Rangers date back to 1926 and are one of the original six teams of the National Hockey League (NHL).  They were the first NHL team ever to win the Stanley Cup in 1928 and pulled off three more wins in the early years.  Their fourth Stanley Cup win came in 1994 after a lengthy hiatus where the team focused on rebuilding.

New York City FC

One of the most recent additions to the list of New York sports teams is the New York City Football Club.  Founded in only 2013, they currently play at the new Yankee’s Stadium in the Bronx.  Despite being young and football being less attended than sports like American football, it’s still one of the most attended in the American Major League Soccer (MLS).

To conclude

Most major cities have their own storied history regarding home teams, but New York’s teams draw huge crowds regardless of the highs and lows.  If you’re looking for devoted fans, any of the teams we listed are going to show you what devotion looks like.  Of course, you can make the games even more interesting by hitting up the betting sites.  Just don’t bet on the Yankees to lose.
