Cops say the man pictured above preyed on a 70-year-old woman, snatching a chain from her neck in broad daylight.

The alleged thief spotted the woman on Avenue U and Coyle Street last Wednesday, at approximately 11:00 a.m. He walked up to her, grabbed the chain and ran off, cops say.

Fortunately, the woman was not injured.

The crime is being classified as a grand larceny, which has been on the rise in the 61st Precinct this year. From January 1 to July 20, the command has seen an 18.8 increase in grand larceny incidents in 2014 over the same time period last year, according to Compstat. The only larger increase has been for another property crime, grand larceny auto. The two together are fueling the precinct’s 2.53 percent uptick in overall crime in the area.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.

Have never seen any cops walking the beat here in many many years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, you’re right. I drive and walk Avenue U several times a week for years, and I can’t recall seeing a single policeman there. Either I’m not observant or they’re not there.

      • Effin Really?

Plenty of traffic enforcement agents though. I just got 2 tickets in2 days WITH VALID PARKING RECEIPTS IN THE WINDOW. One agent told me “just send in the ticket with the receipt and it will be dismissed”. I will, but what’s he point of this? Quota, I guess. What a waste of personnel and time, mine included. But no cops around to protect us from purse snatchers, chain snatchers, burglers.

We need Captain Chell back. He is taken out of the 61 and it all goes to hell.

    • Horatio Caine, CSI Miami

Too soon to blame D.I. Valdez. Take it up with Police Commissioner Al Sharpton. You ain’t seen nothing yet.

    • Jimmy

The fact is Chell was the one responsible for thr uptick in crime. Whether or not the new guy was the best candidate to replace Chell is certainly questionable? Chell was a fat no it all bully, who did not know his butt from his elbow. The new guy may not have the neighborhood’s best intentions at heart though.

Uptick in crime is due to all the anti-police BS that has been going in over the last 3+ years. It has told creeps that the police are not going to go after you. Believe it or not, the fear of getting caught is the most effective crime fighting tool. Most people who commit crimes would not if they knew there was a high likely hood of getting caught It is human nature. There is the percentage of mentally ill or drug addicted that will commit crime no matter how many cops are out there. The perception has to be that the police are aggressively fighting crime . All the media coverage is that police are backing off. which they have.

If cops actually did their jobs there wouldnt be “anti-police BS”. Instead of just reacting to things they should be out walking around on foot talking to people getting to know the people. All they do is drive around waiting for a someone to call them for help when its already to late. When was the last time you heard of a cop actually stopping a crime from happening? You think the cops should have more power to do whatever they want? You want cops to make people scared of them? All they will do is write more bs tickets and bust balls.

I spoke with D.I. Valdez by the community council meeting last month and I was very impressed with him. He seemed to truly care about our neighborhood and was very patient and knowledgeable. The NYPD deputy police commissioner came and also spoke very well of DI Valdez. It looks like he is doing everything he can with the resources he has. I give him an A.

This is a hate crime. These crimes are rising in neighborhoods like Gravesend, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island and they all have one thing in common. If this punk were white and the person he stole from were black, Al Sharpton would be marching down Avenue U.

    • Guy

Yeah white people need someone to stand up for all the injustices we face. And march for us too.

Geeez…. Was happy to grow up in the Bay of the 50s and 60s where few of these low lives would venture South of Eastern Parkway. Sigh

Maybe this could have been a Duke Elington or aDuke Snyder, who are you?
