An early morning car accident on Sunday left three people injured and a car wrapped around a tree on Ocean Parkway.

CBS reports:

The driver of a 2013 Acura slammed into a tree on Ocean Parkway between Avenue O and Avenue P in the Midwood section of Brooklyn at around 3:30 a.m., police said.

… According to officials, the driver was heading northbound on the parkway and was possibly trying to make a turn when he lost control of the vehicle.

The Post reports that police are still investigating the cause:

Cops said there were no immediate indications of alcohol or drug use, but they’re looking into whether speed was a factor.

The impact left the car’s tires blown out, its hood sheared off, and the windshield shattered.

Passers-by gaped at the sight of the wrecked car, which at a quick glance appeared to have a tree growing out of it.

The car stayed wrapped around the tree for several hours, with the wreckage only being loaded onto an NYPD tow truck after 9:00 a.m.

i walked by around noon, saw the debris that was left after the car was removed. they were heading northbound but ended up on the other side, must have been speeding like crazy to have swerved that hard. glad they didn’t injure anyone but themselves.

i have one question to ask the driver………………..

    WAS IT WORTH IT?

I wonder if Allan will change his mind now. If you are doing something illegal with your vechicle, such as speeding, you are then using that vechicle as a weapon. Therefore, speeding should be a crime. When determining whether to charge the defendant with a felony or a misdemeanor, the cops would look to see how many miles per hour the defendant was going over the speed limit. 30 miles or more over the speed limit would be a felony, 10-30 whould be a misdemeanor, while going a mere 10 miles or less over the speed limit would be treated as a violation of law.

I’m sure the driver thought he was driving at a safe speed.

          • Allan Rosen

How could you be sure of that? Maybe the driver just wasn’t thinking at all. See my comment to Gary, above.

Maybe, had had the driver encountered any form of consistent enforcement of driving laws prior to this point, the driver would have had reason to think.

            LOL.

Change my mind about what? Violating the speed limit is not the cause of all crashes. You can still have a deadly accident by going below the speed limit. There is something called knowing how to drive. While the cause of what happened is not known yet, if in fact the driver tried to make a 90 degree turn at 30 mph, he just doesn’t know how to drive. It can’t be done. Perhaps he realized at the last second that he was about to miss his turn and decided to make it anyway although he was going too fast. Or perhaps he was too stoned out of his mind to even realize how fast he was going. Or maybe he was even trying to make the turn at 50 mph. We do not know.

So do you pass a law stating you must make 90 degree turns at 15 mph? Or do you lower the speed limit to 15 mph? Neither makes sense. You need better driver education.

And by the way, I am still waiting for that apology.

So what do you think might have happened in this particular case? Do you think the driver was driving above or below the speed limit?

From the amount of damage, it appears he was speeding excessively like maybe 60 or over. A 25 mph limit would not make a difference.

Why is it so hard for people to understand this. If the limit was 20, 30, 40 or 50 people who want to break the law will do it no matter what. Pols want to change laws to make it look like they are doing something even though it will do nothing but annoy more people than it will help.

Unless enforcement is consistent and regular enough to persuade people that breaking the law is against their own interest.

Drug dealing and murder have some serious penalties but for some reason people keep doing it.

Nice attempt at changing the subject, but I didn’t say anything about changing the speed limit.

In any case, it looks like you and I agree that the driver was probably not abiding by the (current) speed limit. Next question: Although we obviously don’t know for sure, do you think that this is the first time the driver exceeded the speed limit, or does it seem more likely to you that he’s exceeded the speed limit in the past? If the latter, don’t you think that, had automated speed enforcement been in use, the driver might have quickly decided that speeding wasn’t worth the cost? Instead, he decided, like so many other drivers, that he could drive in whatever way he personally deemed safe, laws be damned.

Another question: It is obvious to both you and me, based on the photographs alone, that speed was most certainly a factor. Yet according to the Post, “Cops said there were no immediate indications of alcohol or drug use, but they’re looking into whether speed was a factor.” Does this suggest to you that the proportion of crashes attributed to speed might possibly be underreported a bit?

Why is everyone blaming the driver when its pretty obvious its the cars fault.

Don’t you just hate it when a car develops a mind of its own and rams itself straight into a tree? Damned suicidal cars!
