Outsiders Converge On Voorhies For Mosque Showdown

Neighbors rallying against a controversial new mosque planned for Sheepshead Bay clashed with counter-demonstrators outside the proposed site on Voorhies Avenue on Sunday, once again turning the sleepy block located between East 28th Street and East 29th Street into an ideological battleground of ill wills where hate-tinged epitaphs and ugly slurs flew for roughly two hours as cops worked hard to keep the two groups apart.

In a notable departure from Bay People’s previous rally, both sides were bolstered by political and advocacy-based organizations from outside Sheepshead Bay’s borders. Those gathered under the Brooklyn Tea Party banner on one side of the block hammered away at the Muslim American Society (MAS) – sponsors of the proposed mosque – for its alleged ties to known terrorist networks abroad, while members of a group called the New York City Coalition to Stop Islamophobia camped across the street denouncing the accusations as nothing more than racist rants.

“This hate against Muslims infuriates me,” said protester Danny Kessler, a Sheepshead Bay native currently living in Kensington. “Freedom of religion is a basic American right.”

Others stood steadfast in their view that the sponsors of the proposed mosque are indeed suspect and do not belong in Sheepshead Bay.

“I don’t want them here,” local resident Lucy Zilber said. “Most of them are terrorists.”

The racist tag has been a potential problem for mosque critics who have some legitimate concerns about the siting of a large religious institution on a quiet residential street. But on Sunday, those attending the rally seemed to wholeheartedly embrace controversial Tea Party tactics directly attacking MAS.

“That’s the next issue,” former teacher Susan Gerber said. “The first issue is the most basic issue – the logistics. The second issue is the terrorist ties.”

Ahmed Allowey, head of the new mosque project, balked at his group’s alleged ties to terrorism citing a letter from Congressman Michael McMahon in MAS’s defense in which the representative says the FBI has given him “no indication whatsoever the Muslim American Society is affiliated with any organization that threatens our national security.”

“We stand with the Constitution because the spirit of this country is the Constitution,” said Mohamed Sadeia, president of the local MAS chapter representing  Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Both sides in the mosque debate attempted to wrap themselves tightly in the American flag on Sunday, flying the stars and stripes and rallying behind dueling renditions of “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land.”

Peace activist Frances Minichiello, blamed unsavory tensions in the community on a lack of leadership and unreasonable fears about Muslims in the aftermath of September 11.

“People are afraid of Muslims, and I’m disappointed that no clergy or politicians are addressing their fears,” she said.

        To be fair, in comparison to Guest’s post, Ruben’s comment was very mild. Take a look at the pictures and you will see the reasoning behind Ruben’s observations. Also, he didn’t say that Russians are a “plague and needs to be eradicated”, like Guest said in regard to Muslims. So I wouldn’t say that he “hates” Russians (and for the record, I was born in the former Soviet Union myself).

          To me all those stupid articles do not make any sence. What realy make sence for me is to understand why over 3000 people should die just because of some “Jihad” and why american muslims did not condemn this the way they condemn an oppositions of new mosques here and in Downtown Manhattan. I’m trying to understand their resistance to give up and respect feelings of those families who lost their loved ones on 9/11. I don’t see people opposing any Mosques at Neptune Ave, Coney Island Ave and Foster, Bay Ridge, Atlantic Ave, etc. becuase we all live in hettos (you may call it communities) and we all reeallize that those arears are muslim hettos, so let to keep one area without an influence of Islam. Honestly, in my opinion, people oppose islam not because of any particular person, but because this religion is very aggresive and unloyal to other religions and descreditate itself a long time ago.

            I respect your loyalty to WIKIPEDIA and I find a lot of interesting and helpful info myself, but this is not a good evidence of muslim condemnation of 9/11 to me. I saw and I know different facts. Because of the “Consitutional Right” (some people called it that way) a lot of muslims (and I repeat A LOT OF) practiced it in a very unusual maner (at least it looked to me that way). Celebrationg a defeat of American enemy in a front of American police, and policemen couldn’t do anything!!!! because they’ve practiced a political correctness of our goverment at that time, looked not only dissapointing but scary!….             The question of Constitutional rights has been discussed here at length, with quotes and links provided (look at “Related Posts”). To change these principles one would need to get a Federal Court to decide that Islam is not a religion OR, lacking that, prohibit organized religious expression altogether. I don’t think either outcome is very likely. So prepare to be disappointed.

            As for the meaning of “ghetto”, I’m happy to look it up.
            OK, here goes:

            Yes it’s a good thing! Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t assimilate the way it’s supposed to be here. Different nationalities do not want to integrate in to American society because it’s not that easy. We come to this country from different places with different traditions, language and culture. We need to accept a fact that no one forced us to come here. Therefore, we need to integrate, in other words it’s called an assimilation. I understand because we all have different cultural and religios backgrounds we can’t assimilate and we don’t want to do it 100%. That’s why we live in communities or Ghettos!!!!!! And we invest money in our houses, businesses, schools. As I’ve mentioned before no one would oppose a mosque in Bay Ridge or on Atlantic Ave., but here it’s a different story. Besides that, do you know why Russian speaking people don’t have a strong voice? Because we suck! We don’t care about our future, we don’t give a sh…t who we vote for, we don’t care about the ghetto we live at, etc.

            And again Ghetto is not a bad thing! It’s much better term than radicalism, terrorism, disrespect and fear. Yes, I think those non-muslim people who support the mosque, do it not because they are liberal, but because of fear. The simple test, would those liberal people feel comfortable to live on Coney Island and Foster, or in East New York? And if yes, why didn’t you buy a house or rent an appartment over there?

            First, to answer a direct question: I bought a house in Sheepshead Bay to be in a close proximity to my mother’s apartment, since we needed her to babysit our kids.

            I do agree with you on integration/assimilation, but I disagree with your conclusion.

            I support this project not because of fear (I fear our (ex-)Guest more than those who will attend this mosque), and most definitely not because I am a Muslim (I’m an Atheist) – but because of my respect for the law, equality and democracy.

            When my parents bought a house here, nobody said “Hey, you Swedes belong in Bay Ridge”. That is where they were born almost a hundred years ago. But this country was a “melting pot”. The children of immigrants, such as my mother was, assimilated in the greater society, their ethnicity was still a part of them but a greater part was American.

            As far as the idea that liberals should move to “depressed” or ethnic neighborhoods, that’s absurd.

            Next, where were you living before? Would it have been right to say “Oops, I’m afraid you just don’t fit in here”?

    Again, there are 2 primary reasons I oppose this.

    First, and most importantly it will destroy the quality of life by a group of singl family homeowners. It will also devalue their homes. Unless someoen explains why they are allowed to do this without so compensating their putative neighbors, at a loss why this is allowed.

    Second, MAS is in fact affiliated with the Holy Land Foundation and Hamas. They can say they aren’t, but as I have posted before Andrew McCarthy, who prosecuted the 1993 WTC bombers, has written about this extensively. He is hardly alone in doing so. Simply saying MAS is not so affiliated is a lie, and sadly too mnay in the media don’t look past that. Having lost a dear friend on 9/11, I labor under no such delusions.

    Would suggest to Muslims that the constant playing of the victim/race card is tiresome. If you got half has worked up about the never-ending misdeeds of your co-religionists as you do about issues like this, we might be able to have a dialogue. Instead we get nonsense about the evils of America and the Jews, equivocating and blaming the victim. We know you say one thing in English for the media and the useful idiots who want to think well of you. And then you say something else at Friday prayer and in Arabic amongst yourselves. If you want to live in a sharia state, by all means, move to one.

    Tolerance is a two way street.     Dont sweep everyone under your liberal pro Islamic prayer rug. Even if construction begins on the mosque, it is not for certainty it will be completed. You better believe that everyone opposed the mosque will do everything possible in a legal sense to hinder the construction. There will be numerous calls to 311 about unsafe conditions, probably calls and complaints to the Department of Buildings and Department of Health, FBI, IRS and Homeland security might get involved, NYS Department of Finance, etc.
    I personally will pass by each and every day and if I see even the smallest violation, I will be called 311. Plus if there are any undocumented workers, hmmm, that would be fun to get Department of Justice or INS involved as well.
    This is promising to be fun, halting construction, even more fun than openly opposing it.

Rounding up third generation American Japanese and American Germans for camps was ok, but not letting MAS built yet another “House of Friends” as levp would want you to believe is a racist act? Muslims attacked us, they treated every person in the Towers as an enemy, why do we need to make selective choices on which one of them is a friend and which one is an enemy? Grief and pain are not selective, why should we be in our likes or dislikes? Many Americans do not like or trust Muslims and the ball is in their court – they need to prove their loyalty to the country, country does not need to proof anything and besides it already has proven – they live here, dont they?
        They use our schools, that I pay for with my tax dollars, they use medical assistance that I pay for with my tax dollars, welfare, food stamps, WIC, Head Start programs, free lunches at school, I already shown them more than enough hospitality by providing for new immigrants when they can not yet provide for themselves. If they loyal to their faith first and country second, they can roll up their rugs and go back to where they came from and live with camels and donkeys.

          Except “they” also pay taxes and are, as a group, no more or less recipients of social services comparing to any other ethnic/religious group.

          Do you have evidence that supports your assertion?

          For example, compare percentage of Muslims receiving WIC and Food Stamps with Jews, including Orthodox families with 10 children (that number of children qualifies them for all the services you listed unless their father makes more than $57,837: http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/governance/notices/iegs/IEGs09-10.pdf )
          As a visual aid I would suggest waiting near the checkout lines at Ave. Y Stop and Shop, for instance. Count the number of people from different ethnic/religious groups using NYS Benefit Cards, until the total becomes statistically important (several hundred).

          What’s funny, when I typed it is that all those groups of people received hate due to polarizing events that created those situations, but today we treat them fairly (mostly). This is what Muslims are currently experiencing thanks to the events of 9/11.

          You say the Muslims attacked us on 9/11, but fail to understand that it wasn’t all Muslims. You just have hate in your heart. You whine and complain about them spending your taxes, but they also pay taxes, which finance both people legally, and illegally, using the system. Most Muslims do prove their loyalty to the United States, they live their lives and pay taxes. Their own faith is their personal belief. Why should they denounce Islam to prove they’re American, which would be unconstitutional by the way? We certainly don’t ask that of the different followers of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and etc. Now are there laws limiting all of them as to what they can or can not do? Yes, but those laws apply to all faiths, but we won’t get into those.

          I’d rather the government focus on getting stricter policies in place for screening immigrants than wasting time and funds on investigating every single complaint on local mosques that are unfounded. If there is a detectable paper trail, let the investigators do the job, instead of distracting them with repeated nonsense.

    even if this was a conspiracy on the part of the government, BBC which is much more respected media outlet and is not under “Zionist influence”, was showing dancing and laughing Muslims on the streets of Middle Eastern countries. Why would they be celebrating so openly death and destruction after learning that suspicion fell on Islamic extremists? And here is a little sketch of attacks around the world related to Islam in one way or another- read it and remember it is only in the month of September, most of the month it was a holy holiday, so not that much activity and even then it is way too many attacks not to mention that Ramadan did not stop fundamentalists from harming their own Muslim brothers and sisters.     You people do realise you’ve been awfully manipulated, dont you? mosques have been built all over the place in the nine years since 9/11, and it has never been quite the issue it has become now. The ground zero mosque is two blocks closer to ground zero than another mosque that has already been there.

    This is a media driven issue that was coopted early on by political forces to polarize, and then mobilize voters in the coming election. Its benefiting both the media, by attracting viewers as the story develops, and politicians, by attracting angry voters. A year from now, none of you will be talking about this.

    Being russian myself i am sure that the only reason those scam artists are protesting the building of the mosque is because they want to assure a monopoly of welfare and ssi benefits for themselves. They see an able scam artist in the arabs and muslims to be able to scam the government into giving them money. They are illiterate and intolerant not ten years ago they were threatened with deportation if they did not become citizens and some of their people cheated and let them take the test in russian. They are implimenting the same bigoted agenda that was used against them by the soviet government.
