Although I’d say drivers should always avoid Sheepshead Bay Road, today there’s an extra reason. National Grid is on the scene just under the train station. They’re doing some minor work to the gas line and should be done relatively quickly, according to a worker. On the upside? Not an illegally parked livery cab in sight.

I think subway platforms – especially Sheepshead Bay train station’s – make great scenes for photography. Gary Wong proves my point with this photo taken just a few days ago. He writes on his photoblog, The Wong Way, “With the temperature in the low 20s and the wind fiercely blowing, these people were smart and stayed in the stairwell while waiting for their train.” For those interested, check out his site. Wong has challenged himself to take and publish one thought out photo per day to document his 29th year of life. He’s going from birthday to birthday. Also, you can subscribe to his Flickr stream.

Gothamist Newsmap is reporting that a person fell onto the tracks at the Sheepshead Bay train station. The incident occurred just before noon today. No further information is available. Please contact us if you know anything.

Good Morning, Commuters

B Train Service Cancelled

These signs went up at B/Q stations citywide on Wednesday morning. The fight isn’t over yet, though. Stay tuned…

This past week has been pretty chilly, reminding us that summer is coming to an end. So we’re bringing you the above photo from l_ameerrante via Flickr to give you something to look forward to (everyone loves those frosty days, don’t we?). Of course, the above is a B train, and we all know that by the time winter rolls around B train service will be suspended, right?

I was sitting on the Sheepshead Bay train station platform late last week, when I overheard a conversation between a young Russian-American girl and a non-Russian friend she was showing around. The girl, black-haired and loud-talking, was telling the visitor that Sheepshead Bay was where all the “cool Americanized Russians live,” as opposed to Brighton Beach, which is “packed with babushkas.” A raised eyebrow from the man was all the girl needed to spur her to explain: “You know, babushkas, the old, miserable Russian women who sit in the sun complaining about the heat.” Here, I smirked.

I’m not Russian, so I was curious to hear from our Russian readers: is Sheepshead Bay known in the Russian community as where the cool Russians are? How has this shaped our neighborhood? What makes it cooler to Russians?

shopping cart cocktail table

It was hard to photograph this shopping cart, because the cocktail lounge setting below the Sheepshead Bay train station was dimly lit — as a good dive bar should be. By ‘dive’, we don’t mean the pool of water in the gutter.

Unlike the other stray cart found in a similar cocktail table setup a little while back, this one was still waiting for the porter to come by and clear it off.

There was no tip left on the table, so we’re guessing that either the service was pretty bad, the vagrants ran out of pocket change, or the patrons had to rush off to catch the train (which might also explain why there are no bar stools).

Sheepshead Bay Train Station

This week’s slightly late mid-week photo comes to us from Israeli Meir Sadan, who caught this beautiful shot of a commuter at the Sheepshead Bay train station back in 2006. -[via Flickr]
