According to a report in Vos Is Neias, New York State Senator Marty Golden reversed his stance on the NYPD’s controversial “spying program,” which allegedly targets mosques and other Muslim gathering points in a citywide counter-terrorism effort.
Golden, a Republican, who had previously provided his signature to a letter praising Police Chief Ray Kelly and the NYPD in their efforts for “going to precisely the source of the problem,” now has stated the opposite at a forum hosted by the Arab-American Association of New York.
“Anybody that would spy on any religious institution is absolutely wrong. I do not stand by anybody who would do that,” said Golden in response to a question wondering if Kelly should apologize. “If [Commissioner Kelly] has, he should apologize – but it hasn’t been proven that he has.”
The spying program, which, according to the AP, targeted “Muslim student groups, put informants in mosques, monitored sermons and cataloged every Muslim in New York who adopted new, Americanized surnames.” It has led to no leads, cases, or arrests.
Golden’s call for an apology was not overlooked by Democratic challenger Andrew Gounardes, also present at the forum, who reminded voters of Golden’s previous support for the initiative.
A new market serving halal products has opened at 2705 Avenue Z, off East 27th Street… you know, just a block away from the 2812 Voorhies Avenue mosque, an area that opponents claimed has no Muslim residents.
Well, regardless, the Sheepshead Bay Halal Market has been open for a few weeks and looks well stocked. It replaces B&R Electronics & AC Service, the television and appliance repair shop that has been in this location for as long as I can remember. But, fret not, B&R is still alive and kicking – they’ve just moved around the corner to 2577 East 27th Street.
Good luck to the halal market and B&R in their new locations!
Below is an e-mail exchange I had with a reader today regarding the controversial plans to build a mosque at 2812/2814 Voorhies Avenue (and here). The reader believed I reported on the issue with a preconceived opinion that supported the plans to build. In reality, the situation is more complicated, and I caution against any knee-jerk responses in any direction. I’m publishing these letters because in my conversations, people who were against the mosque couldn’t believe that I’d defend it, while people who were for it couldn’t believe that we thought the opposition was anything more than racist. I believe the letters below explain, at least in part, the thought process guiding our coverage. I welcome your input.
Approximately 300 people turned up for Tuesday night’s Community Board 15 meeting, where opponents of a Sheepshead Bay mosque were expected to seek the board’s support.
Sheepshead Bites couldn’t make it to the meeting, but we asked GerritsenBeach.net (GB.net) to check it out for us and we’ve also picked up additional details from attendees and board members.
From attendee reports, we’ve learned that of the nearly 300 people who came out, 75 percent were in support of the mosque. GB.net writes, “There was nothing really to report other than this was a show of force. A lot of people who may or may not be from the area in question supporting the mosque.”
One Muslim family in Sheepshead Bay has posted a festive sign wishing us all a Happy Eid. So, we would like to extend this Eid Mubarak message to our readers.
Those of you who forgot to move the car in time for the today’s alternate side of the street parking, but were pleasantly surprised to find that you didn’t get a ticket — you have this Islamic holiday to thank!
