sprint-1

Thank goodness. Sheepshead Bay Road has what it’s been missing for a whole six months: a Sprint store.

Sure, you could say, “What’s wrong with any of the six other cell phone stores (not to mention the two barber shops that also sell cell phones) on Sheepshead Bay Road?” The answer is, “I don’t know.” But we didn’t have a dedicated Sprint. At least not for the last six months.

Now we do. A Sprint location opened its doors in late November at 1610 Sheepshead Bay Road. It comes after the June closing of a locally-owned Sprint down the block at 1743 Sheepshead Bay Road.

It is good to see the renovated storefront leased. It’s one of the properties owned by Waldorf Realty, which also owns broad swaths of Sheepshead Bay Road that they’re currently renovating (unfortunately leaving several portions looking rundown and vacant). So now that the work is done and it’s filled, it’s one spot on the strip looking a little sunnier.

Welcome (back) to the neighborhood, Sprint.

Would-be burglars didn’t do much to hide their faces from cameras during an attempted burglary, and now cops are using the footage to track them down.

Two men, pictured above, attempted to break in to the Verizon Wireless store at 2680 Coney Island Avenue early Friday, July 11.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., the suspects spent 15- to 20-minutes trying to pry open the store’s front door with a pair of standard pliers. They were unsuccessful at gaining entry, but left some damage to the door.

“I came into the store, I noticed the damage on the door and found the broken piece of the plier, and I called the cops,” said one of the business’ owners. “I don’t know what they were thinking [by attempting to break in with a plier].”

The owner reviewed the overnight security footage and spotted the pair above, and handed the photos over to police. The suspect with the beaded necklace has a tattoo on his right arm, notes the business owner, who asked not to be named.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website, or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

Update (12:12 p.m.): We’ve added details to this post after speaking to the owners. Also, the date of the incident was changed. The NYPD indicated that the attempted burglary was July 14; the owners noted that it was July 11. The article has been amended.

tobacco

It was just last week that we reported that the Sprint store at 1743 Sheepshead Bay Road had shuttered, kicking off a flurry of construction. Well, now we see that City World Tobacco is preparing to open in its place.

Rovshan from Arbuz sent us the photo above, joking that “Smoke shops are froyo stores back a few years ago,” probably referring to our musing last year, in the wake of a spate of frozen yogurt shops opening, that frozen yogurt might be becoming the new sushi.

A few “smokeshops have opened recently, but they all appear to be focused on “vaping” – or vaporized liquid tobacco products. It’s just a guess, but I’ve got a feeling this one’s going to be an old school smoke shop, with cigarettes and rolling tobacco, lottery tickets and gum. That’s just a guess.

Good luck, City World Tobacco.

sprint

The Sprint store at 1743 Sheepshead Bay Road closed up shop sometime in the last few weeks and is currently being gutted.

I don’t know why owner Dan Jacobs decided to pack up the shop, but we hope he’s on to bigger and better things. He was helpful when I last needed a phone – and apparently it wasn’t a unique experience. Some guy over here even dedicated an entire blog post to the guy, and drew a cartoon of him.

So long, Sprint, and best of luck, Dan.

Now, with all that construction going on, anyone know what’s on the way?
