Amid all the damage from Superstorm Sandy, at least one new eatery has been born. Espresso & Grill Room is now open at 1613 Voorhies Avenue.
The location’s interior was still incomplete when the flood waters came, sparing them the cost of needing to redo everything, an owner told us when we stopped by before it opened. That allowed them to make a quick recovery and launch this business this week.
Those who take the Voorhies Avenue route to the Sheepshead Bay train station may have been dismayed about the loss of a morning coffee place when Cupcake Kings closed back in June. But, don’t despair, Espresso & Grill Room will replace the coffee and cupcake locale at 1613 Voorhies Avenue very soon. And they’ll be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – as opposed to just the sweet stuff.
And, yes, we got a lot of tips about this one – including from our friends over at Arbuz (1706 Sheepshead Bay Road). So thanks to everyone who let us know!
Espress & Grill Room, welcome to the neighborhood.

After little more than a year and a half in business, Cupcake Kings at 1613 Voorhiees Avenue has served its last icing smothered dough ball to Sheepshead Bay residents.
The business closed up shop last week, just months after the original owners sold it off to new management (they kept a minority role in it, I’m told).
Cupcake Kings (1613 Voorhies Avenue) capped their first annual cupcake eating competition on Saturday with an outrageous and dastardly claim: Sheepshead Bites brought in a ringer!
After a cancellation left them with an empty seat at the competitors table, Cupcake Kings owners Dennis Roitman and Larry Kopylov turned to the crowd demanding a volunteer. A lone challenger stepped forward: Sheepshead Bites’ marketing assistant Jobana Soto. Clad in the golden insignia that is the Sheepshead Bites t-shirt, Soto claimed the top prize in the women’s category.
Of course, it didn’t hurt that she was the only woman at the table. And that there was no woman’s category. But that didn’t stop the accusations of cheating.
But regardless of these facts and falsities, Soto kept pace with the men, cramming 14 cupcakes in her mouth in the 10-minute competition, besting others, but not all. She joined our other representative at the table, competitive barbecue chef Jim Ryan (above), in making the site proud for their notable capability to jam sugary dough puffs in their pie-holes.
Just a friendly reminder that Cupcake Kings’ cupcake eating competition takes place tomorrow, starting at noon, at their 1613 Voorhies Avenue storefront.
Sheepshead Bites, as an event sponsor, will be there with stickers, and Cupcake Kings will have their own giveaways. So come on down and root for our our Jim Ryan, reppin’ the Bites in the contest!
Psha, screw Nathan’s. The real competitive eating challenge this year is right here in Sheepshead Bay, this Saturday, when Cupcake Kings hosts their first annual cupcake eating contest.
Competitors, on your mark, because you’re going to have 10 minutes to jam as many deviously frosted dough-loafs into your mouth as you can. We’re not really sure what’s standard here, but we’ve found at least one report of professional eaters cramming down a whopping 42 cupcakes in eight minutes, so we’re hoping the winner at least gets past 10.
Enter Jim Ryan. As one of the event’s sponsors, Sheepshead Bites was offered the chance to pick a contestant to represent the website. We brought in Jim, a local resident and leader of the award-winning competitive barbecue team Beer Belly Porkers. That’s right, we signed on a man who knows steaks and ribs because, what the hell, cupcakes are for wussies. Also, it’s going to be really funny to see him wearing Cupcake Kings’ pink shirt.
The winner of the competition, which we’re pretty sure will be Jim, gets a trophy, a $100 gift card and a Cupcake Kings gift certificate. Second place gets a trophy and Cupcake Kings gift certificate. All contestants get a t-shirt.
The event kicks off at 12:00 p.m. in front of the store at 1613 Voorhies Avenue. There will be music, giveaways and more for those who come to watch.
The gents over at Cupcake Kings (1613 Voorhies Avenue) sent over a photo of these special St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes they’re dishing out. You know, for those of you who enjoy your food smiling and looking at you as you sink your teeth in. If you tip, they have someone hiding behind the counter who will scream, “No! Don’t eat me! Noooo!” in an Irish brogue as you devour the little bastard.
First of all, go and hit play on that video, so the music plays as your read. Supposedly, it’s written by a Sheepshead Bay native, though we can’t confirm that.
Ah, that’s better. Now, are you just reading and realized you haven’t gone out and bought anything for your valentine? Or did you completely screw up, and forget to make plans?
Fortunately, Sheepshead Bites is here to rescue you.

“How many points do you think are in this?” a customer asked.
Lady, the only points that matter here are brownie points.
Cupcake Kings, the decadent sweets shop at 1613 Voorhies Avenue, just off of Sheepshead Bay Road, opened its doors today. With rows of kaleidoscopic cupcakes taunting the tastebuds, it’s certainly no place to be counting Weight Watchers points.
And here’s the best part: to celebrate their opening, owners are giving out free cupcakes today only, from 4 p.m. until their 10 p.m. closing. With at least one person marking the hours left until the giveaway on Facebook, you better arrive sooner rather than later, because owners are expecting an early rush.
Is Sheepshead Bay ready for its own gourmet cupcake vendor? Well, at least two locals and hundreds of Facebook fans think so.
Signs went up for Cupcake Kings at 1613 Voorhies Avenue (off Sheepshead Bay Road) weeks ago, but little information was available other than “Coming Soon!” Then the owners wrote to us about their plans.
