On Tuesday, August 5, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m., everyone is invited to the local crimefighters' open house. This fun and educational event, emphasizing 'country as community', takes place all over the United States on the same day as the National Night Out so that the entire country can take one huge collective bite out of crime and drugs. Facing crime is stressful and costly, so for one night, our community can relax and have some fun under the safe and watchful eye of our local law enforcement, right in their own backyard at Coney Island Ave and Ave W.
All costs for the event are being provided free by the 61st Precinct Community Council and Auxiliaries, the Law Enforcement Explorers, and the Police Officers of the 61st Precinct, with the support of area merchants and elected officials, but donations are encouraged--so, be sure that this will be the safest night to carry your checkbook with you.

UPDATE: THE SUSPECT HAS BEEN CAPTURED!
An attack, robbery and carjacking of a 62-year-old teacher at Good Shepherd School has caused community alarm, and the police are investigating whether the incident is part of a larger pattern of assaults and thefts.
A female teacher was accosted at 6:40 in the morning on Tuesday as she arrived at the school, on Brown Street and Avenue S. The attacker punched her in the face and stole her purse, then stole her 2000 Toyota Corolla while she was filing a report at the 61st precinct. The teacher was hospitalized for her injuries, but released the same day.
Officials at the school are working with police and have been advised not to comment on the incident. Police sources have also not returned calls or issued a statement.
The car was found this afternoon, three blocks away on Ave. V and Brown. Police dusted it for fingerprints.
A description of the suspect is not yet publicly available, nor is there any information about him, except that he is male. However, the incident was caught by the school's security camera, and NYPD's Technical Assistance Research Unit (TARU) arrived early this afternoon to analyze the tape and capture a photo to give to press, which is expected to be released later today or early tomorrow. Detectives were also on the scene questioning neighbors.
Video of the incident has now been released.
Police are investigating whether this is part of a number of similar incidents involving purse snatching and other small thefts that have been plaguing the neighborhood. A police source said neighbors should stay alert and call police immediately if they see anyone suspicious in their neighborhood. If you feel you are being followed, the source said, walk faster and try to get indoors. Do not be afraid to ring the doorbell's of your neighbors.
Sheepshead Bay/Plumb Beach Civic's attorney, Gene Berardelli, was arrested on June 6 on disorderly conduct charges while defending the rights of black youths to use Manhattan Beach.
According to Berardelli, police were blockading the Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach foot bridge and other access points to Manhattan Beach, turning away black students. The students, who converged on the beaches in celebration of Senior Cut Day, were being told that they could access the beaches at 2:00 p.m., while white students were told they should return at 1:30. Black students were also being directed to Brighton and Coney Island beaches.
The outraged Berardelli met a handful of black students who were turned away, and told them that he would escort them to the beach front. What ensued was several instances of harassment from police officers, who treated both the kids and Berardelli inappropriately. The officers also attempted to misinform or outright lie about the reasons black students couldn't access the beach, though no mind was being paid to white students attempting entry. On their journey across the footbridge, on Oriental Blvd., and at the entrance to the beach, they were stopped numerous times, the last ending with a Lt. Harrington attempting to physically intimidate Berardelli, shoving him, and ordering his arrest.
Berardelli was put behind bars before being issued a summons. He told SheepsheadBites.com he found the incident "disgusting", and plans to report the affair to the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board, among other groups. He has also refused the help of politicians, requesting no special treatment, and indicated he plans to fight the charges all the way, and potentially sue the lieutenant who ordered his arrest.
