(NYS 22nd Senate District Banner)

It seems like just yesterday that Senator Marty Golden's office had a meeting to discuss the issues affecting our area. Hey, wait, it was just yesterday. Oh, that was the Town Hall Meeting on Education. The next Town Hall Meeting will cover Public Safety issues in NY Senate District 22 and will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, November 19.

While this meeting may not be geared specifically to Sheepshead Bay and the Precinct representatives will be coming from the 68th, not the 61st, it's still a great idea for residents of Sheepshead Bay to stay informed about what is going on in the neighboring areas of Senate District 22.

This meeting is being hosted in part by the Dyker Heights Civic Association (DHCA) and I'm sure there are things we can learn from them - especially, about how they keep their beautiful mile-wide neighborhood safe, clean, and protected from excess overpopulation and development. By the looks of the NASA Photo linked to on the Dyker Heights Wikipedia information page - so well-referenced and put together by Christian Zaino - there are also chunks of green space there (courtesy of the Dyker Beach Golf Course and the Belt Parkway Park, Promenade & Bike Path). Compared to our South Brooklyn neighbor, Sheepshead Bay looks like a veritable wasteland on that map. Or maybe in a couple of years, we'll be inviting DHCA to visit our own little green oasis on Brigham Street.

Here are the details:

From the Brooklyn View:

A 32-year-old white man was stabbed to death at 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 21, in Sheepshead Bay. The murder took place on the corner of Ave. Z and E. 17th St.

According to police at the scene, the man was stabbed repeatedly in the stomach, and crawled to the corner of E. 16th and Ave. Z where he succumbed to the injury. There was a blood trail that stretched a block. He was found by a woman lying dead early this morning.

Original Post:
There has been a stabbing death in the area of East 16th street and Avenue Z. A reader wrote in that "A huge portion of Avenue Z, around Bagel Boy and the Sheepshead market, and 16th street to Ave Y was taped off with cops and investigators standing around inside."

We do not have any more information on this incident, or any photos other than the one above, which we're not even sure is related to the incident. If you have any more information, please leave it in the comments area or email it to nberke@sheepsheadbites.com. Please send any available photos of the scene. We'll update readers as we learn more.

Aug. 5: Night Out Against Crime

On Tuesday, August 5, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m., everyone is invited to the local crimefighters' open house. This fun and educational event, emphasizing 'country as community', takes place all over the United States on the same day as the National Night Out so that the entire country can take one huge collective bite out of crime and drugs. Facing crime is stressful and costly, so for one night, our community can relax and have some fun under the safe and watchful eye of our local law enforcement, right in their own backyard at Coney Island Ave and Ave W.

All costs for the event are being provided free by the 61st Precinct Community Council and Auxiliaries, the Law Enforcement Explorers, and the Police Officers of the 61st Precinct, with the support of area merchants and elected officials, but donations are encouraged--so, be sure that this will be the safest night to carry your checkbook with you.

UPDATE: THE SUSPECT HAS BEEN CAPTURED!

The NY Post has obtained the security camera footage of the 62-year-old Good Shepherd teacher being beaten and robbed.

The man - who appears to be around 20-years-old and was wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, white sneakers and was carrying a dark-colored messenger bag - remains at large late today. Anyone with information about the suspect can reach the 61st precinct at 718-627-6611.

UPDATE: THE SUSPECT HAS BEEN CAPTURED!

Good Shepherd

An attack, robbery and carjacking of a 62-year-old teacher at Good Shepherd School has caused community alarm, and the police are investigating whether the incident is part of a larger pattern of assaults and thefts.

A female teacher was accosted at 6:40 in the morning on Tuesday as she arrived at the school, on Brown Street and Avenue S. The attacker punched her in the face and stole her purse, then stole her 2000 Toyota Corolla while she was filing a report at the 61st precinct. The teacher was hospitalized for her injuries, but released the same day.

Officials at the school are working with police and have been advised not to comment on the incident. Police sources have also not returned calls or issued a statement.

The car was found this afternoon, three blocks away on Ave. V and Brown. Police dusted it for fingerprints.

A description of the suspect is not yet publicly available, nor is there any information about him, except that he is male. However, the incident was caught by the school's security camera, and NYPD's Technical Assistance Research Unit (TARU) arrived early this afternoon to analyze the tape and capture a photo to give to press, which is expected to be released later today or early tomorrow. Detectives were also on the scene questioning neighbors.

Video of the incident has now been released.

Police are investigating whether this is part of a number of similar incidents involving purse snatching and other small thefts that have been plaguing the neighborhood. A police source said neighbors should stay alert and call police immediately if they see anyone suspicious in their neighborhood. If you feel you are being followed, the source said, walk faster and try to get indoors. Do not be afraid to ring the doorbell's of your neighbors.

Sheepshead Bay's community meetings, development issues, local politics, interesting people, happenings and cool new places -- these are just some of the topics the Bite sinks its teeth into. Welcome to Sheepshead Bites, angling for a better Bay.
