Security officials at Edward R. Murrow, James Madison and Midwood high schools were on high alert Thursday and are again today, after threats to shoot students emerged on social media.

Parents at the schools were notified yesterday morning by robocalls from the schools’ principals. A recording of the call made by Murrow’s acting principal obtained by PIX11 announced the following:

I wanted to take this opportunity to address some of the concerns you may have regarding some recent posts on Facebook that were reported to the administration. Here at Murrow, your child’s safety is our top priority. We’re working with DOE officials and NYPD that all appropriate actions have been taken to ensure your child’s safety. Please know that we will do everything to ensure your child’s safety.

The NYPD’s Intelligence Division is looking into the post, and PIX11 notes that it may have been “an old one that was reposted.”

The threat is not believed to be credible, but administrators took additional security precautions nonetheless, placing additional school safety agents and police officers in all three schools.

Midwood High School did NOT notify parents the day before! We received emails from the principal the day of, 3/28, at 1:57pm and 2:12pm. The website wasn’t updated until that afternoon either. The school day was almost over. A lot of good that did!

My daughter goes to Murrow. We were informed the day before with a robo call from the Principle.

Is Murrow still a good school in terms of safety? My daughter wants to go next year but is a bit apprehensive because of the alleged increase in crime.

It’s a large school with a lot to offer. My daughter talks sometimes about the kids who dress like they are in a gang, and they probably are. On occasion she has mentioned witnessing a fight. Having said that, there are a large selection of honors and AP and College Now classes. The opportunity is there to get as much out of the 4 years as possible. The overwhelming majority of the kids just want to go school, graduate and go on to college. My son went to Saint Edmund Prep for high school and I can say without a doubt, that my daughter received the superior education.

Oh wow! So glad you mentioned St Edmund Prep. That was one of her choices if Murrow or Goldstein didn’t pan out. Thanks for your response.

Not that it isn’t a problem everywhere but drugs are rampant in Edmunds. They seem to turn a blind eye to the sales that go on under their noses.
