I don’t have time to write an open thread today because Optimum Online makes me return their modem to their “store,” or else they won’t stop billing me – and of course their store is in a location without mass transit.

Shysters.

The open thread is now open.

You can’t pick any ol’ Optimum Store, pfft Optimum Store, more like a social security office than a “store” lol

  • BrooklynBus

Is that the same as the Cablevision store?

  • Ace718

And to top it off the Brooklyn “store” is in a not so great neighborhood.

Slower than advertised speeds and I think they throttle. Fuck optimum. Give us google fiber please.

In my building on Ocean Parkway a rep was here around Christmas, he was saying that Cablevision was trying to get the building to be Optimum only, and kick out FIOS (which is better by a lot, but not so much after Sandy). The Rep said that Optimum was going to piggy back onto the FIOS hardware. Can they really do that? And if they can, I still don’t see why I should buy from them?

    • levp

FIOS uses fiber-optic lines all the way to the apartment, while Cablevison uses coax cable. Of course, set-top boxes are completely incompatible as well.
      “Piggybacking” isn’t technically possible.

They are absolutely the worst. Bad outdated and miserable customer service

I am not understanding something about this battle going on . All the cable companies vying for position. There is something evil about it, aside from the fact that we will be/are at their mercy. Where is ATnT in all this?

  • Old Sheepshead Hand

All the cable companies are terrible. Time Warner Cable is as bad if not worse. I don’t know what the cost benefit is of mandating that such transactions like modem return be done this way, but they all do it.

I suppose all the failings of the cable providers are the trappings of a monopoly and it needs to be opened up to competition. When a private company gets to be the sole game in town, they act no different than a government bureaucracy at its worst stereotypes.

But TWC has one over on Cablevision boy. TWC wants to rebrand NY1, it’s one good thing, into TWC News! Because they have an arrogance about their company as if they are beloved. They like the idea of people backing a corporate brand like a sports team. They are deluded. Of course it does happen, let’s see if Cablevision renames the News 12 networks. That would be terrible.

TWC, from what I understand, is the absolute worst of the lot. Their platform itself was pretty awful when I used it at a friend’s house, and when I called customer service for a different friend, it was the pits. It made me SO glad to have Cablevision, actually.

All in all, I don’t think Cablevision is that bad, and had a fairly good experience with them and their internet service – without boost – worked faster than advertised for me. But I didn’t like getting a phone call several times a week asking me to get triple play, despite me making clear every time that I wasn’t interested and wanted to be off their list. I also didn’t care for the haranguing they gave me when I canceled with the reason that “Someone else is paying for it now, it’s not my problem or my choice.” They would not let me off the phone. Then they told me I had to get that damn thing over to their office during hours I’m normally working. In the end, the place itself – accurately described as a Social Security office kind of layout – had no line and I was in an out.

I’m on FIOS now. I hate Verizon, but this service is speedy. Sure does go down an awful lot, though…

Upstate TWC Changed Rnews (Formally GRC9-Rochester) to YNN So that they could multicast, fire half the staff and still claim local news. So now most of upstate and Texas (which get their cable from TW) see the same friendly (local) Face. I am sure that is the only reason they would want to make NY1 TWCnews. To merge more networks.

the neighborhood is not bad its not like your going there at 11pm but it is far everytime i need a new remote i have to travel to west bumble fuck

As someone who deals with multiple cable co’s in my line of work, they all stink. I found the best service to come through a combination of Verizon FiOS for Internet and phone and DIRECTV for video. DTV is by far the very best provider, their customer service is second to none. While I do not like their installers, the company reps are responsive and always accommodating. FiOS, while Verizon SUCKS is by far the best Internet provider. They are also the only co that gives you a static IP in their base package. Static IP’s ease the integration of smarthome technology and remote monitoring of home components.

Optimum had the gall to bill me for 2 months after I switched to Fios- (one month after I returned their stupid equipment) they said I canceled m telephone service only not my internet or cable..um yeah- I returned my boxes and remotes so how was I even supposed to access services?? To add insult to injury they want late fees for this supposed service I never got!! What fraud and scammers they are. I love my new Fios- fast- my ipad is seamless- all the computers can run at the same time even games and movies with no errors or lag time. I am one happy camper- thanks Fios for finally hitting our area! And for you Optimum- you better not mess my credit up-I am NOT going to pay for services I did not get!!
