One of Southern Brooklyn’s only art groups – the Brooklyn Streetcar Artists Group [1] – was welcomed by Borough President Marty Markowitz this week, as they celebrated the first art exhibit at Brooklyn Borough Hall newly-renovated Community Room.

Twenty-eight artists hung pieces along the walls in the lead up to the unveiling, which was celebrated Wednesday evening with music by Stefan Bauer Dean Johnson Duo, refreshments, and a typically bombastic speech from the beep.

“Our hearts go out to those, including several of our members and friends, still suffering from the results of Sandy,” said BSAG Executive Director Arthur Melnick. “The show must go on, however, and we are very proud that Brooklyn Streetcar Artists’ Group has been chosen to initiate the reopening of the gallery at Borough Hall. We thank our host Borough President Marty Markowitz and his cultural director Liz Koch for inviting us to display in this wonderful setting.”

The group suffered somewhat itself, with two of the artworks destroyed in the flood.

Participating artists from BSAG include: Herb Alwals, Gerard Barbot, Joe Bolton, Beryl Brenner, Michael Brenner, Bob Daniels, Arlene Finger, Ruben Holder, Ellen Hoyt, Leon Nicholas Kalas, Holly Koffler, Victoria Lapin, Barbara Listenik, Edwin Lopez, Anthony Marra, Catherine Marra, Deborah Matlack, Murray Melnick, Clarence Moore Jr., Benito Morales, Butch Moran, Renie Morris, Linda Murad, Harriet Piltch, Morris Rabinowitz, Richard Resnick, Patrick Rosato, Jess Schulman, Pearl Siegelman and Takeshi Yamada.

The artworks will be on display until December 7 in the Community Room of Borough Hall at 209 Joralemon Street. If there is no meeting in progress, it should be open to the public, but it is advised to call (718) 802-3700 first.

UPDATED (11/18/2012): Here’s a video taken by BSAG artist Pearl Siegelman of Markowitz’s statements:

Correction (11/18/2012): The original version of this article stated it was BSAG’s first exhibit at Borough Hall. It is not, but it was the first art exhibit from any group to take place in the newly-renovated community room.
