FINAL UPDATE (3:20 p.m.): Police surrounded a Manhattan Beach apartment building, responding to a call of an emotionally disturbed person who had barricaded himself in the sixth floor apartment he shares with his mother.

After nearly two hours, the man was pulled from the apartment and strapped to a gurney, shouting what appeared to be psychotic ramblings.

“You’ve commited crimes. This place is a federal offense. It has radiation way above the levels…” he shouted, trailing off. As they attempted to put the man into the ambulance, he shouted “Help!” and “I want to go home.”

Police told Sheepshead Bites he was being taken for a psychiatric evaluation. A source added that the man has had similar breakdowns in the past, and is well known to neighbors.

A family friend who said he has known the man since he was 4 years old, noted that “he’s had issues… I just hope he doesn’t end up homeless.”

Sources told Sheepshead Bites that no one was in the apartment with the man, and that he was unarmed. No officers were hurt during the rescue effort, in which officers were on the roof, fire escape and surrounding the building, as well as in several apartment units near the disturbed man’s. An airbag was set up underneath the apartment unit’s window in case he jumped.

BREAKING: Police are responding to a possible jumper at 301 Oriental Boulevad off Beaumont Street in Manhattan Beach.

Emergency Service Units responded to the scene shortly after 12:30 today, having received a call about a shirtless man on the fire escape.

When police arrived, the man barricaded himself in an apartment on the top floor.

ESU is on the roof and around the building. An airbag has been brought to the scene in case he jumps, but has not yet been set up.

Pictures coming soon.

UPDATE (1:40 p.m.): Our man on the scene is reporting that he’s hearing loud banging and what sounded like a high pitched groan. There appears to an argument occurring with at least one woman shouting. It’s unclear if the shouting is coming from inside the apartment.

Police Use Snake Camera To View Into The Apartment

UPDATE (1:50 p.m.): There is still more shouting occurring, and the apartment may be located on either the 5th or 6th floor of the building.

UPDATE (2:00 p.m.): We’re hearing some high pitched screaming, but it appears to be coming from a man.

ESU has setup the airbag, while the person in the apartment continues to scream periodically. ESU has dropped a snake camera from the roof into the window of the sixth floor apartment.

UPDATE (2:15 p.m.): It appears the the police have entered the apartment and defused the situation. They have left the roof and are deflating the airbag.

UPDATE (2:25 p.m.): Police have brought the man out of the building on a stretcher. He was foaming at the mouth. As he was carried out he was shouting “help,” and “you have committed crimes,” and ” I want to go home. Home is where I belong.” He was also shouting some things about “radiation.”

Yeah, many, many years ago we looked at a 2BR/2BATH apartment in the building, but the apartment was so run down, dirty and infested that we took a pass.

COBURN. Definitely rollerblade lady’s kid. I went to bay academy with him. He’s my age then, 28.

Maybe the “radiation” he’s referring to is from the cell phone antennas.

    • 90SBROOKLYN

Yea thats probably his biggest problem

  • Manhattan Beach Resident

I heard someone say that the gentleman lives right under the antennas and can feel and hear the vibrations.  That’s enough to set anyone off, but, if the “radiation” from the antennas is affecting him on a cellular level, which is possible despite all the industry spin to the contrary, then this could be a harbinger of similar incidents happening with other victims and perhaps even a class action lawsuit against the cell phone industry and the government agencies that gave these hazardous towers a free pass.  Just because government agencies say something is safe doesn’t make it so.  Remember the EPA and the Ground Zero air quality?
