Apparently, the city is getting roll your own cigarette stores to close faster than you can say “roll your own cigarette stores.”

Green Leaf Smokes opened in late January at 1326 Sheepshead Bay Road, off the corner of East 14th Street. We asked at the time if they were aware of some ongoing lawsuits to such establishments – which sell cheaper smokes than at the bodega because customers roll their own using the stores’ machines – but they didn’t seem concerned.

When their Coney Island Avenue-based competitor was shut down under pressure of lawsuits claiming tax evasion, an employee of Green Leaf told us that they, too, had received some threats from the city.

We have not been able to confirm if the legal threats are the reason for the closure, but it has been the city’s MO to settle the charges against these establishments by requiring them to shut down their businesses and sign an agreement not to reopen.

This is really pissing me off, that’s not the way our system is supposed to work. The city bullies them so they close?

Why wont any of these guys stand up for their rights and their point of view so the law can get sorted out once and for all for the benefit of everyone?

Grocery sales on Cig’s in sheepshead bay have dropped (probably) and people started to complain (probably) about this place.

So what? Who cares about their complaints.

The thing that annoys me is that these people are investing money in a certain business model that interprets the law a specific way. The city interprets it another way. Instead of taking the issue to court so we could get a definitive answer they slink away like slimeballs.

It sets a bad example that the city can just throw around a few threats and then people just cave in like a set of dominoes.

What? I hate tobacco smoking just as much as the next guy but people still need to stand up for their civil rights. Our government, all the branches, are getting a bit too much power under their belts for my taste.

If the neighbors have any complaints there are legit forums like the community board where they could be raised.

I agree! When govt has dictatorial powers, that’s pretty scary.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I buy a pack of cigarettes which are already rolled I always think: “There must be a better way.”

I don’t know why people are supporting this type of establishment that promotes cancer, heart disease and emphysema? Why would people invest in a business that does not abide by laws to control the sale of cigarettes to protect the public and children from it’s effects?  It is also illegal to sell single cigarettes from a pack of traditional cigarettes. I don’t see anyone trying to open up a store selling “Loosies”.
I passed by this shop every day and hardly ever saw any customers in there. It was a business that was poorly planned especially with similar stores being closed by the city.

all you people who are complaining that these stores set a bad example that the government can do w.e they want blah blah. how about YOU open your own smoke shop business. the store owners were under a lot of pressure, they had to pay a lot of money to lawyers in addition to putting a lot of money into leasing the stores and buying all the supplies. im sure you would close also because nobody wants to fight a battle they probably wouldn’t win for MONTHS even YEARS while losing more and more money on expensive lawyers. its better to close. its sad but true.
