The venerable Village Voice food critic Robert Sietsema has again turned his gaze to Sheepshead Bay’s waterfront, praising its rich seafood options and calling two of our seafood restaurants among the city’s best.

The list of “10 Best Bargain Seafood Restaurants” ranks Yiasou Estiatorio (2003 Emmons Avenue) and Liman (2710 Emmons Avenue) in fifth and second place, respectively. And it’s a damn good showing for the neighborhood, considering that of all 10 restaurants, only three were in Brooklyn – proving that Sheepshead Bay deserves its place as one of the city’s best foodie destinations.

The list also included six Manhattan restaurants and one in Queens (which took first place).

    Of Liman, Sietsema writes:

A rustic and off-price Turkish seafood spot, Liman is charmingly located on the lip of Sheepshead Bay. Whole-fish selection runs to red mullets, porgy, smelts, sea bass, St. Peter’s fish, branzino, royal dorado, and flounder, while fried oysters and an herby octopus salad hold down the crustacean part of the menu. And mezze like flute-shape sigara bureka, arugula salad, and fried cubes of liver make perfect landlubbing starters.

    Of Yiasou, he writes:

Hey, this is Sheepshead Bay, so this Greek place also makes Italian baked clams. And are they ever good, better than Randazzo’s just down the bay. Don’t miss soft but ropey charred octopus tentacles dotted with capers in a red-wine vinaigrette. Sold by the pound, your charcoal-grilled selections run to branzino, royal dorado, sea bass, and red snapper, while an excellent whole fried flounder holds down the bottom end of the fish menu, pricewise.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: What about Randazzo’s?!

While the legendary clam bar didn’t make the list, it sort of gets an honorary mention. Sietsema spotlighted it yesterday as a teaser to today’s post, writing, “Randazzo’s shines like a beacon on Sheepshead Bay, the last man standing from what was once a large population of Italian clam bars along the bay.”

And even though they didn’t make the list, it has made plenty of others. All due respect for our friends over at Randazzo’s, but it’s great to see other restaurants in the area getting their due.

Check out Timeless Tastes Turkish Culinary Culture cookbook to make at home, hubbie did the recipies!)
Anyways he is spot on with his review..
I did have a huge problem with Yiasou giving me a fingernail in my saganaki- and laughed about it as I raced to the loo to rid myself of the problem!!  NO desire to return after that!!

I have never eaten in Liman, but I have friends who have, and they love the place.  It must be really good because mediocre doesn’t make it in this neighborhood.  Robert said that the boregi was flute shaped, so I would think that it is the lucious cheese filled.  Su Borek is a fantastic dish - do they serve that?

I am surprised to hear about your bad experience at Yiassou.  I have eaten there a few times and it was always clean, the food was great and the staff was very nice.  I would have a really big problem with that situation also.  You should have definitely filed a complaint with the board of health.  I love the place, but hair, nails or any other foreign object in my food, in any restaurant, is totally unacceptable.  And to laugh at this, I would have stood up in the middle of the restaurant and showed all the other customers what I had found.

My favorite place to eat is Yiasou and I’m glad they are finally getting recognition for their amazing food. That place is immaculately clean and I’ve been eating there for years and never had any issues. Not only do they have a delicious octopus appetizer, but i love their langostinos with rice and grilled veggies. Its the real deal here not just a knock off and i highly recommend it for a quick bite or a romantic dinner. I’ve tried everything on the menu and u really cant go wrong. The waiters there are also on point and never let a dirty dish sit in front of you. Their chocolate cake & cookie are absolutely DELICIOUS!

I’ve been a regular customer at Yassou located on Sheepshead Bay. I live in NJ and still go there very often. Can only compare it with Avra or Milos in Manhattan. The food is delicious. The fish is always fresh and Greek appetizers are simply the best, warm chocolate cake is to die for and the atmosphere is very warm. You always feel very cozy there. Its just the best! Once you go there you always want to come back.
