Hoping to shatter last year’s astounding record of a mind-boggling 7,790 toys, members of the 41st Assembly District Democrats Club, Councilman Lew Fidler, and Club Executive Director and Toy Drive Founder Bryan A. Lee are holding this year’s Community First Toy Drive Grand Finale Party on Thursday night, December 15, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the club, 2952 Avenue R and Haring Street.

Hard-working volunteers, including a team of 15 teens from the Kings Bay Y’s afterschool group, sent out invitations for the toy drive to the club’s more than 1,200 members and supporters in an effort to usurp 2010’s awesome achievement, which, according to club statistics, amounted to 30,002 toys in 10 years, making it the largest-collecting Toys for Tots chapter in all of New York City for the fifth straight year.

One of the group’s off-shoot collections, organized by Be Proud Foundation, took place this Monday. As we reported earlier today, they collected 500 toys to contribute to the club’s total.

All members of the community are invited to stop by the party this Thursday with a brand new, unwrapped toy. Donations are also accepted, and can be made by mailing a check payable to Community First Toy Drive – 41st AD Democrats Club, c/o Bryan Lee, Executive Director, 585 Mayfair Drive South, Brooklyn, NY 11234.

All the toys collected from this year’s drive will go to the United States Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program. According to the organization, approximately “one of every 32 gifts it distributed in 2010” came from the ceiling-high pile of playthings collected during last year’s Community First Toy Drive.

The New York Mets’ Mr. Met, the Brooklyn Cyclones’ Sandy the Seagull, elected officials from throughout the city, and hundreds of toy drive supporters are all expected to be in attendance.
