It’s always a heart-breaker for me when an establishment has been around so long that it becomes part of the landscape, then closes before I get around to that promise I made to myself to stop in and try it. Moscow on Hudson at 1920 Avenue U is one of those places.

I used to spend a lot of time on this stretch of Avenue U when I was in high school or visiting from college, and I’d always pass this Eastern European deli and bakery. I knew it was one of the oldest in the neighborhood – certainly one of the first Eastern European places I saw on Avenue U or in Sheepshead Bay generally – establishing itself at its small storefront much earlier than the later bazaars that serve up larger selections on plots with much larger square footage (see: Net Cost Market, Cherry Hill Gourmet, et cetera). I had planned to stop in for some pirozhki or salads or maybe smoked salmon, which I heard they had the freshest in the area.

But, alas, that will not happen. When I walked by last week – fully prepared to keep walking and visit it another day – some construction caught my eye and dragged the storefront out of the landscape and into focus. The gates were down, the innards were out. Moscow on Hudson is no more.

Alas, they were also geographically challenged! Just like that Racquet Club at the end of Bay Parkway, that once called itself Oceanview, even though it sits on another one of our scenic Bays, Gravesend! Both bodies of water, as I’m sure you all know, are on the other side!

    First McDonalds now this!!

Does anyone know if their rent went up? I’ve seen so many stores open up recently and then close as quickly. Look what happened to the Grand Bazaar or endless plethora of furniture stores along Coney Island Avenue that come and go.

I was there a little while ago and was told by the owner that they are closing for renovations only.

Well, it’s sad to see any business fail, but their stuff wasn’t that great, IMHO.  The place on the north side of Ave U, further east, or the little place on Neck Road around 14th Street, or Net Cost, are really better.  IMHO.

The place on Neck Rd. has spoiled foods. We used to shop there and completely stopped because of the terrible quality of the foods, prepared and packaged. I remember buy sour cream there and finding mold in it.

Although that problem doesn’t exist at net cost, at least not in my family’s experience, but I personally find their prepared foods overly sweet from too much sugar in the sauces they use.

I have a field day in Net Cost with the frozen dumplings, pot stickers, perogie and such.
For prepared food M & I on BBA can’t be beat. I start in the back with the wide variety of soups then I hit the pastries and the the entrees. OMG that little nook in the front is to die for as is that multi-layered cake. I can go on and on, I have been there so often and always try something diff. The smoked meats and fish are as fresh as it gets. And…I have no affiliation with the establishment. PS. It is clean also.

What is that Russian dish (excuse me if I am not being geologically correct) that has beets, raisins and some sort of dressing made from Mayo on top? It is layered.

      clap?

      • Barkingspider7

I don’t know about clapping.  I have never eaten anything from there, but I really hate it when a business fails.  They must have had some good stuff to eat, they were there for a long time.  Oh well, with all the “international” food stores (aka Russian deli’s), nobody will go hungry.
