Are you ready America? On October 27, 2011, Sheepshead Bay will reclaim its long lost crown as Brooklyn’s – nay, New York City’s – ultimate food destination. Join us as 20 local restaurants and assorted food mongers throw down their best at the inaugural A Taste of Sheepshead Bay.
I can’t tell you folks how long I’ve wanted to write those words. I hope you’ve longed to hear them. On the 27th, it all becomes a reality. Come out and join us for this once-in-a-lifetime event.
Here at Sheepshead Bites, we’ve never hidden our disdain for the hipster lifestyle or the media obsession with the food and culture scene of “Brooklyn” that stops at Prospect Park. The “media elite,” to steal a term from the right-wing, ignores what is happening in Southern Brooklyn. I don’t know why they do it, and frankly it’s their loss. Our food scene is ever changing and expanding.
So while the king is looking down, this jester’s going to steal the thorny crown and return it to our neighborhood. Die, Williamsburg – die!
I’ve written before about our neighborhood’s vast diversity of food offerings. A Taste of Sheepshead Bay is going to lay it all out for you. We’ve selected a few of our favorite food vendors for this event. We are presenting the best of the bay, not the most expensive or the fanciest foods, but the best.
Ladies and gentlemen, in no particular order, I give you the presenters at A Taste of Sheepshead Bay.
- First up, is Il Fornetto, who is sponsoring our event. Il Fornetto has been serving up fine Italian cuisine in its beautiful bay front dining room for over 10 years.
- Liman. Did you know that Liman was the first Turkish fish restaurant in the United States? Liman’s kitchen consists of many different types of fish imported from Turkey, Greece, South America and North America.
- Randazzo’s Clam Bar. How could A Taste of Sheepshead Bay not include Randazzo’s? Voted NYC’s best seafood restaurant for many years and it’s right here in Sheepshead Bay.
- Chop Stix. As they say on their website, “At Chop Stix, we bring delicious dishes from the East and serve them to you in a beautiful environment and comfortable atmosphere.”
- Top Brgr. Sheepshead Bay’s newest burger joint, it sits on the waterfront serving kobe beef to the masses. Come see what’s under their bun.
- Kawaii. I don’t like naming favorites, but this place is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood.
- Jimmy’s Famous Heros. Jimmy’s is so famous they don’t even need the second “e” in “Heros,” or a website. Jimmy’s has been serving the bay for generations.
- G & S Salumeria and Pork Store. What, a pork store? Hell yeah! G & S is a true old-school butcher that has adapted to the modern shopping habits by offering outstanding store-cooked meals. I hope they bring their balls!
- Tete-a-Tete Cafe. A modern American bistro on the second floor, Starbucks-beater on the first. Located right in the heart of the Bay’s business district, it’s a great place for coffee in the morning and a shot at night.
- Masal Cafe. Located in the old Lundy’s building, this “fairy tale” Turkish style cafe whisks you back to Istanbul, Brooklyn style.
- Maria’s Restaurante Italiano. Maria’s has been serving classic Italian food for over 80 years. They are Sheepshead Bay.
- Anthony’s Place. Located on Avenue X and Anthony’s place serves home-style old school Italian cuisine with a modern twist. Originally opened as Pizza Bowl in 1947, Anthony’s is another Sheepshead Bay institution.
- Jay & Lloyd’s Kosher Deli. What’s more Brooklyn than a Kosher deli? Fuggedaboutit.
- Coney Island Taste Peruvian Restaurant. Peru? In the Bay. Hell yeah, baby. The Village Voice raves about it, I bet you will too.
- Wheeler’s. Who doesn’t love Wheelers? Cold beer, mixed drinks and a restaurant in back. It’s Sheepshead Bay’s answer to Cheers.
- Chicken Masters. Oh, their chicken. Nobody fries chicken like Vinnie and the crew at Chicken Masters – even our local KFC succumbed to the mighty Chicken Masters.
- Arbuz. Frozen yogurt, crepes, waffles and tea – what more do you need?
- JoMart Chocolates. JoMart has been satisfying sweet tooth’s since 1946 with chocolate covered hand-made marshmallows, butter crunch, nut brittles and more.
- Kingsborough Community College’s Culinary Arts Program will be there dishing up unique flavors from the Bay’s south side. Some folks call that Manhattan Beach.
- The Turkish Cultural Center is bringing the taste of the Middle East with desserts cooked by their students and instructors.
And we’re not done yet, there’s still a few more surprises up our sleeves.
Wow, look at that line up. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out. I’m getting hungry just reading it. I think we’ve just about covered every cuisine available in our neighborhood. Tickets are limited – so buy yours today. This will sell out.
