Saturday: Mosque Organizers To Give Out Free School Supplies

Muslims help local communities amidst economic crisis

BROOKLYN, New York (August 23, 2011)- This August, over 5,000 needy children across New York City will receive free school bags filled with supplies including notebooks, pens, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, rulers, crayons and more.

ICNA Relief, a division of The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a NY based national organization, plans to give out 350 free school bags with school supplies to the Sheepshead Bay community this Saturday, August 27, 2011, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

This initiative is part of ICNA’s national Back 2 School Giveaway Project, which is hosting over 30 similar events across the U.S. These efforts hope to help over 15,000 children nationwide.


“Many families in Brooklyn are under financial pressure; some have lost jobs and find it difficult to buy school supplies for their children,” said Asim Ranginwala, Outreach Director for ICNA NY. “We hope this initiative will cater to these needs of low-income families, and help build a better future for our children.”

Islam teaches us, “A person is not a Muslim who fills his stomach while his neighbor is hungry.” The month of Ramadan also gives special importance to increasing charitable acts, as fasting develops compassion for those who are poor and needy, inspiring the act of giving. Through the Back 2 School Giveaway, ICNA hopes to both help struggling families provide for their children and inspire the American Muslim community to partake in this commendable act.

ICNA NY will be hosting giveaways this August in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester. ICNA was able to bring school bags, school supplies and smiles to over 3,500 children in New York City last year.

      Puhhhh-lease, the only people who will grab those free supplies are the same illegal immigrants and free loaders that live near Nostrand avenue, definitely no one on THAT block needs supplies from shady folks backed by some questionable radical Islamic organization. And maybe few bleeding hearts from the folks singing praises to the mosque organizers here. And this is not even 30 silver pieces!

        It’s actually backed by donations from people who care.  I know you and your ilk love to get out your can of hate paint whenever you can.  But seriously, talking crap about impoverished kids getting free school supplies only paints you as being an inhuman a-hole.  Your hateful rhetoric is sickening.

      The exposure I have had with the Muslim community has alwasy been very positive.  The majority are very kind and hospitable.  They are nice neighbors.  Yes, some are extreme, but that is the way it is with every religion.  This is a very holy month for them, and it is traditional at the end to give gifts and celebrate.  It is a shame that so many people are hateful. Are all the Germans bad because they had Hitler?  Are all the Italians bad because they had John Gotti?  Hell No.  So why do so many of the people in our neighborhood think all Muslims are bad?  Nykat, I really like what you said.

        Thanks Barkingspider7, it’s just so sad when hate spews from an act of kindness. RY, not a Judas here- and really believe that if you can’t afford to have children, then don’t have them. But things happen life situations change and the children are never at fault- School supplies and a bookbag may be handed out to our next president!

    I was driving down Voorhies Ave. What did I see? 5-6 islamic people, a couple of policemen, but no kids or their parents. PR ACTION? Who needs their help in this neighborhood? They’d better look for other places…
