Pat Singer and other residents are upset that the municipal parking lot from Brighton Beach 2- Brighton Beach 4 street is increasing the price for a space from $300 to $500 quarterly.

The city is raising the parking permit rates at the Brighton Beach Municipal Parking Field from $330 to $550 per quarter – a striking $220 price hike that has residents up in arms.

The increase at the lot – at Brightwater Court and Brighton 2nd Street – will take effect in October, and be accompanies by a hike in metered rates to a quarter for every 10 minutes.

The Daily News reports on the reaction:

Pat Singer, president of the Brighton Beach Neighbors Association, said her office has received a flood of phone calls from angry residents complaining about the hike for the Brightwater Court lot.

“They’re doing it on the backs of people that are struggling, and that’s tough,” said Singer, who added that on-street parking has become a big problem in the neighborhood. “They have no alternative to put their cars anywhere else.”

Angry drivers said they got flyers last week about the rate increase, and some are now thinking about circling local blocks in search of parking instead of paying the hike.

… Richard Tomback, 69, a history professor at Kingsborough Community College, said he has kept a spot in the parking lot for the last 15 years, but now plans to give it up.

“It’s a complete lack of respect [for] citizens of Brighton Beach,” he said. “I’ll have to walk 10 or 15 blocks after parking on the street. It’s an inconsideration by the city.”

The price for quarterly parking is rediculous, and now they are adding insult to injury.  This is so unfair.  Both Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach are difficult enough to find a parking space in.  A $220 dollar raise per 1/4 is totally unnecessary.  OK a small raise every few years, expected, but this is robbery in every sense of the word.

So, dont park. Good luck finding a cheaper lot.

      • Barkingspider7

I don’t park there because of the price.  I once inquired about getting a municipal parking permit – years ago – and the price was alot less then.  I take the bus, no muss, no fuss.  Yeah, it would be great just to step off the train and get into my car, but I have better things to do with my hard earned cash than hand it to the city.

        • LesterK

You are not handing over cash to the city for nothing. They give you a parking spot for a fee. Most parking lots charge to park. Enjoy taking the bus or train.

Sorry, no matter what, no parking space is worth $2200 per year.  I don’t care how cheap anyone thinks it is.

New York City and Brooklyn included will soon become liveable only for those who are financially very well off with pockets of projects left for “flavor” and riots. The good news is that a short 4 hour drive away is beautiful Buffalo NY or for those who want to stay local, Newark, NJ.  I for one welcome our new found poverty.

Its called supply and demany my friends. As long as their were people willing to pay for the space they will raise. I dont blame them. They trying to get as much money as possible

Supply and demand have nothing to do with it, this is not a business and should not be run like one. The city can probably charge a lot more for water also, doesn’t mean it should do so.

      • LesterK

        clean water = necessity
        Parking = privilege

Lower the price of water to increase the price of parking.

There was a time not so long ago when you didn’t even have to pay for water.

At first glance at the article i thought wow thats crazy then 10 seconds later im thinking hey thats not bad. If anyone rents a private spot (driveway/garage) in the area they know this is relatively cheap. The sudden hike is what sucks the most but a spot in the neighborhood is going to cost you at the minimum $200/month this is $183/month. What the city needs to do is build a parking structure here maybe 3-4 stories and do the same at either lot in SB.

when there is a demand, someone will supply.

    thats only 183 $ a month…  not bad imo

Good! This is New York City!!! A world city! World cities are progressive cities that should look forward, not backwards. The car is backwards, public transportation is progressive & the future.

Drivers should get charged at every cost. They clog up our streets & pollute our air. Why drive if you have one of the most extensive subway systems in the world just blocks away?

  • nobody, really

“I’ll have to walk 10 or 15 blocks after parking on the street. It’s an inconsideration by the city.”

Wow, 10-15 blocks. The outrage!  That would mean exercise!

Please, I am always amazed at the lack of perspective drivers get when they’re just the tiny bit inconvenienced.

    Walk, or pay up.

    • LesterK

He can take the Q or B  train or the bus to the parking spot.

Dont be cheap! If you had lots of money, you would not be complaining and post this article. I have lots of money. Money buys me happiness and happiness buys me money. It sounds like a lot of you people dont have any money

    • Barkingspider7

Good for you John - Money buys you happiness?  You must be a very shallow person with no friends.
