American Way — the official “award-winning” mag of American Airlines (who knew they had such a fancy website? Or that they even had a website at all?) — did a bang-up cover story on “The Disappearing Deli,” highlighting the sumptuous offerings of our very own Jay and Lloyd’s Kosher Deli (cue the comments war on whether they are kosher or “kosher-style”), alongside the likes of the Lower East Side’s famous Katz’s Delicatessen, and Mile End, the Montreal-style Jewish delicatessen in Downtown Brooklyn.

Opened in 1993, Jay & Lloyd’s is operated by third-generation deli owner Lloyd Lederman and Jay Stern, boyhood friends who grew up down the street from each other in Brooklyn. “We saw the old ways going,” Lederman says. “Most of the delis were becoming commercialized, and they didn’t have that traditional deli atmosphere and flavor. We are using Grandma and Grandpa’s recipes and holding true to form.”

[…]

Lederman says that although kosher meats and products are more expensive, they offer superior quality. “Sure, you can get a sandwich at the local bagel deli counter for $5,” he says. “But you are getting what you pay for.”

But beyond the quality of the beef, part of what the customer is paying for is the deli experience. “We kibitz with our customers,” Lederman says, referring to the Yiddish term for joking. “It’s almost like a Catskills Mountains, Borscht Belt routine around here. That’s what makes the New York deli unique.”

If you are a Jewish deli aficionado, it’s definitely worth a look see. As for myself, it’s been said that the most dangerous spot in New York City is the space between myself and a Katz’s pastrami on rye.

Fact.

Not necessarily healthier, but definitely trendy:

Eating trendy foods?  Thats a slippery slope to becoming a hipster!

      • Anonymous

Says who? the Jewish people who are making money of idiots like you who believe it’s healthier just cause it’s under some dudes supervision?

Grow up……. the Farming industry is a Business…. the FASTER you do it the FASTER you make money…. sooo the Slow and careful way of making products kosher is Old news.

don’t believe me? Go to a kosher Slaughter House.  you’ll probably Eat your Words right after.

        • levp

Speaking of slaughterhouse business, remember Agriprocessors?
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agriprocessors

“The Agriprocessors plants have often been controversial because of frequent citations for illegal practices such as: animal abuse, food safety violations, violations of environmental laws, child labor laws, and the recruitment of illegal immigrants and inducing them to work in often dangerous conditions at illegal wages.”

        • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

Correct, more often then not they don’t supervise anything. It’s “self regulated” You pay one of the kosher groups to have a rabbi rubber stamp the whole place.

i give  anything a sign of the cross with my hand and  voila – kosher it is. or soak the shit in salt for aweek that makes it kosher, borko is right, kosher bullshit

If you’re into quarter pounders with cheese, I guess it’s ok, but for those of us who enjoy a succulent porterhouse or six-inch-high pastrami on rye with a sour pickle and Dr. Brown’s black cherry soda, cheese is really kind of inappropriate. But that’s just a matter of personal taste.

      • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

Granted, steak goes fine without cheese, and i’m not talking about fast food and processed food either, but that Pastrami on rye you mentioned is just THAT much better with some nice cheddar or munster.

I’m down with a Reuben — I had one when I went to the KCC Ocean View Room (Robert did a post a couple of weeks ago on it — spicy as hell; I loved it) — but anyone comes near my Katz’s pastrami and rye with cheese and they are losing fingers.

          • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

Not wanting cheese is fine too, but holding to some bullshit rule from thousands of years ago….

If I want cheese on my Kosher meat I shouldn’t have to bring my own cheese. There should be a balance, like separate utensils or something.

          • Anonymous

LOL! The Kosher food will be served with clean gloves, the cheese will be applied with my hands which i just scratched my ass.

            somehow…….. i don’t think that would work.

Still, I’d also be downtown with a Phillie cheesesteak from Geno’s. :)

          • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

I prefer Pats. Geno’s is dryer and a beefier flavor, but Pat’s is juicier and softer and just oh my god I just drooled on my keyboard….

I’ve never known anyone who put cheese on pastrami.  I  mean, I like a cheeseburger, or other meats with cheese, but never that combo.  I guess it would be interesting to try it.  By the way Arthur, I found a 5guys and the burger was seriously delicious!  You were right!

          • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

What toppings did you go for? Did you try their hot dogs?

I typically go for Ketchup, Mayo, Extra Cheese, Extra Pickles, Grilled Onions for my Burgers.

For my dogs I go with Ketchup, Mayo, Extra Cheese, Relish, Grilled Mushrooms.

It’s oh so so so so goooooood.

          • Barkingspider7

I had the bacon cheeseburger and my toppings were lettuce, tomato, grilled mushrooms and onions, heavy pickle, – I thought I had died and gone to heaven!  I haven’t tried their hot dog yet – I am still full from my burger (last week!!).  The place is on Fulton Street, not far from where I work.  Their fries are also really good.  You can taste that they are fried in peanut oil.

          • http://www.njluxurymotors.com Arthur Borko

They just opened a place on Court Street apparently too.

Arthur, before I was a vegetarian, I ate cheese and meat, and have nothing againstit, but what I want to say to you is mind your own business.  If YOU think it belongs together eat it all you want, but STFU and let others do as they choose.

For some reason I can’t post in the regular comment box, so I’ll do it here.

I stopped going to this deli after I had a disasterous lunch  (too long of a story) and Joel came around to the table and asked how everything was, and I told him, in a very nice way, and he got annoyed.

I was simply voicing an opinion, doing so doesn’t prevent people from doing as they choose, unlike Kosher Law. What you eat should be a personal choice. Kosher Laws are an archaic custom based on observations and not science. Feel free to STFU yourself. It’s one thing to use vulgarity against a concept or political figure, or criminal. It’s another to use it on a fellow poster. Grow Up and enjoy your ruffage.

Great kosher deli here and pork ribs over at Bensonhurst Bean. Something for everyone!

Nice how the pickles and cucumbers are cut and arranged in a heart shape!

Kosher, Smosher…the place is just a great old fashioned deli.
The food is great and the waiters (last time i was in there) were old school.
You utes don’t remember all the great deli’s the area had.

On a Boar’s Head pastrami sandwich, I would get cheese. On a pastrami sandwich from Katz’s or Adelman’s – no cheese is necessary. That meat is so fucking delicious, that I’m sorry to say, cheese would ruin the flavor. And I’m a huge lover of cheese. But there are just certain sandwiches where cheese doesn’t belong, and that’s on the real meat sandwiches. Boar’s Head are the only sandwiches that should have cheese.

    Secondly, Lloyd is mean.

  • Raytuned88

Lloyd has a ” help wanted ” sign thats been in the window for the past 15 yrs straight. when i asked him why  he said , i always leave it in the window. duh! fact is  he hires and fires people left and right. he thinks it  funny. if he valued his hire help his vbuisiness would be booming, Ilive in the neighborhood for 30 yrs past this place everyday. do you know why  servivce is so fast . ? because you just might be the only customerr.  better pastrami on rye in avenue x diner and better price.

    • http://twitter.com/nauticalstar Janelle

Hence the reason I said Lloyd was mean. No one can tolerate his nasty attitude. I don’t know how Jay’s done it for so many years.

i don’t think i ever met a Jewish deli that I didn’t love.  Still, I’ll go to Adelman’s because of the quality of ownership.

I’ve ordered the same thing for 50 years at these delis: corned beef on rye, potato knish, and soda. Used to be Dr. Brown’s creme soda, but now the normal diet coke (have i put everyone to sleep yet?)

Okay, I lived in Canarsie (Bayview Projects) till age 10 (early 1966). Who here ever went to Grabsteins (Ave L and Rockaway Pkway). That was the deli to end all delis, well, i was young, and of course, everything was better then than now  :)

For me it’s Katz’s Deli Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
