Caution: Massive Sinkhole On Knapp Street

Drivers beware! A massive sinkhole has formed on Knapp Street, near Avenue Z.

We first heard about this yesterday from a reader, but we were waiting to get out there and snag a photo ourselves. But then that scallywag over at GerritsenBeach.net beat us to it. So we just stole it and figured we’d put it on a site that people care about.

Just kidding! Thanks for doing the work for us, Dan!

By the way, Dan adds that this formed over the course of a week. I wonder if anyone called 311 before it gave way.

    So basically the marsh was never properly filled here. 

    I seem to recall that this happened many years ago near here as well. We’re talking almost 50 years ago. I am assuming that this must have happened again later.

      I have pointed out those sink holes before. We have so many underground springs that are probably reopening. 30 odd years ago we had a cave in because of a spring that had been used for well water.

    I put in a 311 complaint about a light pole on my corner swaying in the breeze. The concrete around the pole had stress breaks in it. Well today the pole was taken down.
    The funnier part of the story is how I called in a complaint of a missing stop sign last week. (sent Ned pics) On that afternoon there was an accident. My camera went wayward during the period I was giving the ladies a copy of the 311 report. So…this week a sign was put back up on the light pole, the very next day the sign was taken down because  it was not supposed to go back on the pole. A new pole just for the stop sign was put in. Today the light pole is taken down and the sidewalk left broken. The last thing this intersection needs is less light. Folks hold on to your rims. LOL
