So we can’t smoke on the beaches and police and the nanny government can tell us what to do but gun rights fools can justify their positions in the name of 2nd amendment rights? More time needs to be spent by the NYPD and the government in general on preventing the definite harm done by the possession of weapons of mass destruction by citizens.

These dumb chornaye have invaded our beaches and neighborhoods, last year they did much damage to Manhattan Beach, sitting on the Bay I would see constant disgusting chornaye trying to make it to public transportation. They are dirty loud and have no respect. As if they were raised in the ZOO :) and I’m not referring to all you chornaye but most of you are absolutely nasty. Please stop coming to our hood and making it look bad.

Anyways despite people pointing fingers yet have nothing to say about the victim or the victim’s family, I truly do pray for them because believe or not a young girl who happened to be black (because it seems like most of you want to point out the fact that the shooters were black) died as a result of the shooting, she did not deserve it and she was only trying enjoy a day at the beach.

This is the last comment I will be posting, Every person can point the finger list “stats” on poor black neighborhoods, talk about how black people are uncivil make up factual information, and simply try to segragate Brighton Beach(because thats what some of you are hoping will happen once the beach goes private) But the TRUTH does not lie within what color skin you have or the history of black violence because every race has their own bloody past, despite popular belief slaves were treated with about the same respect the victims were treated with by the people who shot them, correction, slaves were treated worse, so while the race card is being drawn a mother has to bury her daughter and only a few people offered their condolences because they were too busy telling other people they were not welcome and comparing black and white history of violence.  

OMG! I can’t believe all the hatred and racism (not to mention bad spelling and grammar) on this thread, but I’ll refrain from commenting further because I wouldn’t know where to begin. As for privatizing Brighton and/or Manhattan Beach, fuggeddaboutit! Ain’t never gonna happen, unless the City goes bankrupt and its creditors foreclose on our public facilities.

Privatizing any of our parks or beaches will require legislative approval and widespread public and media support, which, given that most of the users of these facilities are, by local definition, “outsiders,” who come here to enjoy what they do not have in their own neighborhoods, where are the votes going to come from?

I’m tired of listening to a tiny, but vocal, claque of nouveau riche “Nimbies,” many themselves foreign-born, bleat about how “their” community has to be insulated from other New Yorkers because a small handful of unsocialized gangbangers comes here and wreak havoc. Even if the City could lease out the beaches as one giant “concession,” with turnstiles, private security, and stadium-like house rules, a day at the beach could cost more than Yankee tickets and still wouldn’t approach the cost of replacing the tax-supported services that currently secure and maintain these resources.

The solution to the crime and violence problem is not exclusion, but more and better policing, and, perhaps, some kind of safe occupancy limitation as we have with indoor premises. The NYPD, as well as Parks Department officers, should patrol the beaches looking for suspicious activity (and, yes, even illegal smoking, because that, too, can precipitate disputes), and disorderly persons should be dealt with swiftly and firmly, either with expulsion from the beach or arrest.  Equipping enforcement personnel with binoculars and cameras, and installing many more and better security cameras on the boardwalk, will not only detect crime and preserve evidence, but will discourage evil-doers from committing acts that are likely to be witnessed and documented.

I’m not sure how “security checkpoints” would play out, as the beach is public property and we still have Fourth Amendment search and seizure limitations. It would probably be illegal, not to mention nearly impossible, to search or wand even fully dressed beachgoers carrying backpacks, as doing this expeditiously would probably necessitate some degree of potentially unlawful profiling. But an increased police presence, and forcing potential troublemakers to more greatly interface with “The Man,” will have the effect of encouraging them to go elsewhere just as bright lights discourage cockroaches from congregating on one’s kitchen counter.

But handing our public spaces over to private industry simply because we can’t manage them is bad public policy. The parks belong to the people, and, because we are served by a government of the people, the parks, and the City’s government, belong to us – all of us. Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach are not gated communities like Seagate. The idea is to cage the criminals, not ourselves. As Ben Franklin said so many years ago, “He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.”
