More Fliers Fly In Sheepshead Bay Mosque Controversy

These two fliers landed in my inbox this week, in the wake of a Brooklyn Supreme Court ruling that tossed out Bay People’s lawsuit against the organizers of the Voorhies Avenue mosque.

We’re not going to editorialize much on these fliers, since last time we posted fliers it turned out the one that claimed to be from the Muslim American Society was an incendiary hoax. So, just to be clear, we have not checked with either MAS or Bay People to see if they sanctioned the creation and distribution of these fliers. But we are saying that they are turning up all around the neighborhood.

What do you think? Real or fake? Waste of trees? Do they pursuade you to… uh… I don’t know… do whatever these guys want you to do?

      I considered making phone calls and finding out. But, in my opinion, there were more important stories that required my time and resources, and this just did not merit it. People from both sides read this site and comment frequently. If it’s not one of theirs, I’m sure they’ll weigh in.

    I have not seen the “MASNET” flier.  I have, however, had the Bay People’s flier stuffed into my mailbox several times.

    The MAS flyer is a hoax, definitely. Unless this is a poor scan I doubt they would have distributed such a noisy looking piece of printing.

    Second, there will not be “Hundreds of Muslim families”? using this facility.

    Third, groups like MAS have more organized and directed methods of raising money. It’s not a local organization. 

    As for the other one, who knows? They’ll probably deny doing this. Especially now that they have been  informed of the illegality of placing unpaid items in mailboxes understood to be for the receipt of matter for which payment has been made to the United States Postal Service.

        1, Does 200 sound like” hundreds”. Hundreds seems like code`for “this neighborhood is going to be invaded by Muslims. At any rate, the number I recall was 90 families.

        The woman who runs the Stop Islamophobia site is not a Muslim. The woman who runs this is Elaine Brower, a social activist with a long history of aiding various causes. It is not a Muslim site.  Any information garnered from the site may be well intentioned, but does not necessarily reflect absolute facts. 2. Who “advertised” on what site? Each congregation can make its own arrangements for financing. That two groups of Muslim worshipers were seeking to buy land for the purpose of erecting building is irrelevant to this debt. 3. Let’s start looking into is funding baypeople(dot)org. Local people, to some extent, but also well-known Islamophobes.

          Lisanne, 200 families – same info in Daily News and many other sources. Just search it. Also, please look at DOB filing documents, how many people they indicated, so they can get a waiver for “no parking space allowed”. Compare… Simple math… Regarding Bay People’s money – easy – donations from the hard working families … There were checked many times, believe me. But regarding the unemployed Ahmed Alloway and MAS – different story. Last year they wrote on their site that there were $295,000.00 debt

             Sorry for butting in, butt.  Too many people putting out too much negativity.
            It is going to be built, people will come to pray and socialize.
            Nothing about it is complicated just the confused Godless people from the Bay People. Who give Sheepshead Bay a bad rep.
            The more good a thing can do (Mosque) the more obstacles the devil (Bay People) will put in it’s way. What ever does not kill them WILL make them stronger.
            But still people wast time, money and their health (anger,hate and guilt can kill) to put up a stink in a losing battle.
            Bay People needs to throw in the towel. I would say so they can save face but they showed their ugly head and it ain’t pretty.

            Unfortunately media numbers aren’t real numbers. Secondly, Writing “hundreds” implies more than 200. How many families will be attending the synagogue that is being built nearby? I am so perplexed as to why those good “Bay People” aren’t doing something about that situation. This will be a traffic nightmare. Please tell them to correct this oversight immediately. Before its too late. Some nicely organized protests are definitely in order here. After all, they are all about parking..

            I think we definitely need to be asking questions about who is financing them? Hollywood money?

     Everyone needs to chill out and focus all of your energy on getting the ZONING LAWS changed in the Bay. The last change was too-little-too-late. Start writing those letters now – better yet ORGANIZE. Seems like we have enough intelligent people right on this sight to make an impact.

    I’m not against a mosque being built in the Bay – just not on a residential block where private homes are replaced by a house of worship – whether that be a mosque, church or synagogue! The only way it won’t happen again is if the zoning laws are changed.

    So, stop wasting your time and energy talking about the Voorhies Ave mosque – IT’S A DONE DEAL!

    Start thinking, planning and organizing for the FUTURE. YOUR FUTURE!

       It’s not about zoning. Do you see anyone protesting when a condo building twice the size of the mosque goes up? This is just a “Us against them” thing. Muslims are an easy target. In the power structure of this country they are pretty much near the bottom. I think only the Eskimos have it worse here.

        To be fair: Yes. Some did protest when condos went up. Similarly, a shul that asked to expand a few months back came before CB15, and some neighbors turned out to complain about… lo and behold… noise, parking and traffic. In these cases, though, there was but a smattering of people objecting. The question is, if it wasn’t a mosque, would THIS MANY people be objecting?

          There are always going to be a few people that will either feel personally affected or are civic-minded types that show a true interest in their neighborhood. I’m guessing that the latter group is relatively unconcerned about the mosque. However, were the congregants of the mosque planning to build a condo building which contained a mosque they would succeed in annoying many who support their right to build today. But I don’t think I’d want to stand anywhere near Pamela Geller.

          I should add that I didn’t carefully word my response. The proper perspective here is that there  would not be an organizational effort made to stop a condo building or a project started by an entity of a better positioned religious entity. Were the Mormons to build a center here I think some would be uncomfortable, but there’d be no “community focused” group set up in opposition to their plans.

         My point is, that it SHOULD be about zoning. Unfortunately there IS no organized effort to stop the overdevelopment  Not enough people protest when the big condos are being in built – if they would, maybe the zoning laws can be changed. Recently a mosque in N.J. was stopped when people protested and the zoning laws were changed.(Maybe that sounds wrong to you).

        YES, there are many nimrods in the Bay that hate muslims – I’ve heard their narrow minded views. They are no different than the whites in the south who hate the blacks. Everybody hates everybody else – that’s the way the world is. And don’t be naive Lisanne, muslims hate jews – blacks hate whites – and visa-versa. As broad as that statement is – it is true!

        However noble your attitude, thoughts, intentions or actions are Lisanne, our energies should be focused on organizing and saving the Bay from anymore overdevelopment, and that includes replacing private homes with ANYTHING else but another private home.

        P.S. Eskimos can build an igloo next to my home anytime! (as long as they don’t burn blubber for fuel – it stinks!).

            I don’t subscribe to that myself, but I understand it on some level. Yes, in a perfect world, this would not exist – but this IS the world we live in.

            Yes, the racists in the Bay shot themselves in the foot by showing their true colors instead of sticking to the real issue – quality of life. YES, there will be an adverse effect on the quality of life to the people living next door to the mosque – just as if a church or synagogue or any house of worship – or a deli or a condo…etc…was built there where a single family home once stood.

            So, let’s tolerate each other, move on, and save the Bay from overdevelopment. This can only be achieved by changing the zoning laws. FACT!

            Let’s stop trying to save the world or stopping racism – it can’t be done (ask Marlon Brando) and start “acting local”.

          We can’t claim perfect tolerance, Human nature has it that people seek homogeneous environments. In cities that doesn’t always work perfectly. So neighborhoods over a period of time become mixtures of various groups, though they do try to form clusters as much as possible. We basically ignore mostly of the groups that have come here, because they haven’t formed clusters yet. (And there probably at least 50 different ethnic groups within the area we call Sheepshead Bay.) The Muslims have been here, but until they staked out a claim of permanency by building a mosque they were easily ignored. I’m reminded of how gays and lesbians during the 80s started chanting at large public assemblages, “We’re here, We’re Queer, get used to it”. I’m sure leaders of that movement felt that this was a necessary tactic, but perhaps the current backlash has it’s origins in that sort of aggressiveness.

          I do believe that Muslims would like mostly to be ignored. They have their own culture, one that is separate from the mainstream of American life. Certainly they are the only group here that seeks to left alone and allowed to remain somewhat apart.

          To address the issue of overdevelopment, I would choose a more representative project. I would have been trying to undo the zoning changes. Some of our civic groups have been trying to do that, mostly with poor results. Our elected officials are allied with developers; city planners are instructed to urbanize every possible acre of this city. Of course this happens mostly unimpeded, there’s not a loud enough collective cry against this trend. In contrast, the opposition to the mosque comes across as being exactly what it appears to be. A reaction targeting a group that is perceived as vulnerable.

    Just to get away from the mosque and jump to another HUGE structure going up,
    Does anyone know what is being built on Ave. X between E12th and Sheepshead Bay Rd.?  2 private homes were taken down and this new building occupies both sites and continues straight through to the next block (Crawford Ave?)

      They were brick houses at that. I have no idea what it is but it looks awful. 

      Crawford Avenue ends at East 12th Street. So the only entrance would be on Avenue X. the north end of the property is still south of where Crawford meets East 12th. But is large.

    I’m looking at this flyers right now and don’t see anything wrong. I would say the Uncle Sam flyer is really great and inventive. Most of us Sheepshead Bay residents do not want this mosque to be built in this particular location, but many are afraid to say something against it. Our quality of life will be affected- yes it will be for all of us and it doesn’t matter if you are for it or against.
    Blocked sidewalks, blocked traffic, people praying on the street, call for prayer.
    To dismiss all of this you must be living in your dreams. It is time to wake up.I’m working all over the city and I seen it all – Brighton on Neptune ave, Bedford and Fulton, the Bronx, etc. Same sad story and a lot of unhappy people. In the Bronx I talked to a nice Spanish couple and store owner – they were promised by Muslims not to play a call for prayer in exchange for no opposition to build a Mosque. Mosque is completed and now they trying to renegade on they promise, because call for prayer is a part of Islam!
    It will happen here too no doubt.
    You and some readers call Bay People racist, but did you see the video of Mosque lawyer Ms. Deek advocating the destruction of the state of Israel just a week ago? Who is the racist now? Or it is only against Israel, not Jews-right?

      Dave, unfortunately they do not watch the video which we try to show them, do not read the documents presented, do not listen anybody. I am not try to be an ironical, this is the simply truth. Each time when I try to present some documents or express our concern they call me ‘racist” or ‘bigot”. Scare…

      St. Marks must have polished their bells because I can hear them now a half mile away. Several times a day. And guess what, good on them. I’m not Catholic but I don’t mind their bells. 

      I wish the Methodists would fix their bells. Ah, the sound of stereophonic bells on a Sunday norming,

      I don’t care about the mosque’s attorney’s opinion on Israel. She’s in no position to do anything more than express an opinion. Her opinion is not one unique to Muslims.

      As always, my first allegiance is to this country. In this country she is free to express her mind, even if we do not agree with what she is saying.

            Does anyone know what speakers system was carrying over on Sunday? This would be in the Area between X-Pathmark and Bedford Ave. I usually hear Sheepshead Bay HS sporting events but this was not the same.

        They got so many complaints and violations and fines (never paid any anyway) and their architect lost his license (or something like that).
        But it is nothing if you compare it with another mosque on 2812 BRIGHTON 3 STREET –same home number 2812 as on Voorhies ave. They got 45 complaints and 29 DOB violations and fines up to $75k.

    I walk down Emmons Avenue on July 4th.  There was a Hasidic family with four children on one bench (the wife wore a wig to cover her head) ….there was a mid-eastern appearing Muslim (wife’s head covered)woman and man….there were two Russian
    people talking loudly in Russian….there were three black friends crossing the street…
    the restaurants: Japanese right below the big Russian restaurant…on the same
    two blocks was Greek, Turkish, Fusion, Italian, Thai, Russian etc.  I felt like this is
    the real America….this is the real melting pot of New York.  My ancestors weren’t
    allowed to worship (Jewish) in many countries and died in others.  The religious institutions should reflect the population.  There are extremists in every religion.. don’t take it out on those who are not….please.
