After less than a year in operation, Grand Bazaar gourmet market at 2424 Coney Island Avenue, just off Avenue U, may be shutting down.

Signs recently went up in the windows offering “Everything 50 percent off” and that it is “For Sale By Owner.” We don’t know if that means the property or the business, and if a buyer pops up the market may indeed stay open under new management.

It appeared this location got off to a rocky start. We first went by and spoke to the owner in January of last year. He showed us around and told us it would be ready to open in February (and, indeed, the store looked complete, save for merchandise). But it wasn’t until July that it finally opened.

We stopped by once or twice since then to peruse and found it to be a fairly nice store, with products similarly priced to the other neighborhood “gourmet” markets. We’re not sure what went wrong, but we wish the owner the best of luck.

Grand Bazaar is awful. Good riddance. As I’ve written in previous comments, I’ve inadvertently purchased stale cereal, freezer-burned ice cream, and moldy sweet potatoes. They’re short on many essentials, while overstocked with “gourmet” items such as $8 jam, and a massive wall with endless varieties of olive oil. I’ve also gone on there on a few occasions to purchase meat, and the entire freezer has been empty.

I live at Avenue T and Coney Island Avenue, and this area doesn’t have a single other supermarket. The closest one we have is the Met Foods over on Avenue U and West 9th st., by the N station. Here’s praying we get a new supermarket in Grand Bazaar’s place.

I have to agree with you.  I went there once, bought olives and other tidbits.  The olives were rancid – nothing was fresh.  Sorry they had a bad run, but with stale, rotten merchandise, there was no way they could stay.

Produce Market on Avenue U and East 26th

I said supermarket, not produce market.

        • The letter A

Produce Market is the name of the store, its not literally a ‘produce market’. They have a wide variety of things from all food groups + sweets. It is in fact a supermarket.
