Sale signs

As we all know, Parkmark on 3785 Nostrand Avenue will be leaving us soon. For the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reminded by this whenever we walk by. The upside? Sales!

Signs in the windows are advertising 10 to 30 percent off all merchandise. So it may be a great opportunity to stock up on goods at a discounted rate.

Or is it? One neighbor and Sheepshead Bites reader, Sue, thinks the sale is one big scam, and residents will end up paying more. Sue writes:

I think residents of Sheepshead Bay should know that Pathmark isn’t doing them any favors by selling products at 10% off full retail price.  This supermarket is closing and they are NOT honoring the prices in the circular… 10% off full retail price is often more than the products are selling for in every other Pathmark!  Unsuspecting consumers are being taken advantage of and that in my opinion needs to be shouted from the rooftops.  Hoping you can help SHOUT!

So is it a steal for customers? Or is Pathmark stealing from customers?

yea they raised the prices of everything in the store. then put on the discount…

It’s a familiar tactic. Of course I’m certain the same people here who failed to understand the problems with the “Everything 60-80% Off Sale on select items” sign on the Four Seasons place will also not see this scam right in front of their face. Consumerism, that philosophy of looking for real bargains and being knowledgeable about ripoff schemes, is gone from this country. People are waaay too accepting of higher prices and bigger ripoffs.

I want to reply to your comment about Bed Sty being safer.
Not only safer but cleaner and a more friendly atmosphere.
Many areas that used to be called slums make Sheepsheadbay look bad
        now a days.

I must admit, I like(d) this store. I shopped there all the time. However, I agree this is a scam. They aren’t honoring the circular and the prices are ridiculously higher. Example, Maxwell House 13 oz can was 10% off for about $4.25. I have never seen it that high even when it’s not on sale. Bumble Bee tuna was about $1.50 per can. Head over to Cropsey and it’s 75 cents. Maybe though we shouldn’t be blaming the store but the parent company. It is the “Great” Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company that is playing us all for fools. Needless to say, I walked out of that store and will no longer be shopping there. The least they should be doing is honoring the circular AND adding 10-30% off. But hey, I’m just Joe Schmo, what logic am I supposed to know.

You will no longer be shopping there any way!
      They are closing soon, remember?

The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company is long gone except in name. It was swallowed up years ago by Erivan Haub, a German supermarket chain owner.

Is anyone surprised??? Now you know why this store is closing!

PATHmark is stealing from the neighborhood. No bargains except ads when they were opened. NO GREAT LOSS !!

I read that Walmart withdrew it’s plan to build one near/on the site of the Battle of the Wilderness (Civil War May 5-6, 1864). They should build one on the Pathmarke site instead, get us poor people some real cheap prices.

All stores raise their prices before a sale. Pay attention.

Just to let everyone be aware, a liquidator buys the product from the company. He then starts liquidating all the items starting with 10%-30% off. Every week to a week and a half the percentage off items go higher. I know of this cause I worked at the Garden City Park Pathmark that which closed down in October. By the time April comes, items will probably be more like 50 to 70% off.

well, i worked in a store that closed back in october and, thats exactly what they did. They can’t honor the circular because they are not ordering anymore product. So, yeah 10% off a full retail price is stupid but, that is what ever retail business does when they close.

FYI…When a Pathmark store closes, the trucks DO NOT deliver any extra or sale items. We (Pathmark) cannot honor the sale items if it’s NOT DELIVERED or at a reduced price on top of the sale. Pathmark is liquidating ALL items at store level because of the closure. We (Pathmark) cannot honor the circular if the store is closing. So to actually post that Pathmark sale is a scam is vicious and wrong because you must find out the WHOLE TRUTH about the policy of a store closing before making any assumptions.

I already worked in a closing store. They do not honor the ad from now on until the closing of the store. If you want a bargain, you have to wait until they are at 30 to 40% off otherwise…you are getting screwed
