We get a lot of e-mails about cars stripped by wheel and rim thieves, often stating that the resulting hulk of glass, steel and fiberglass sits there for weeks. Such is the case with the photo above, taken on Bedford Avenue between Avenue T and Avenue S. According to the reader, Igor L., this one’s been there for some time, and we’ve heard of others that were left for as much as two months.

Quite frankly, authorities can’t do much about it if they don’t know – and even then a little prodding couldn’t hurt. So we’re opening up this thread to ask if you know of any other cars like this that are still sitting on the streets. We’ll see if we can get the word out and have them removed.

Wheels, you meant to say wheels. Rims are part of a wheel.

I hope so. Most owner’s manuals suggest that for a longer and more productive car life you use wheels.

At the last precinct meeting, the Deputy Inspector began reminding people not to leave the key to their wheel locks in the glove compartment. Apparently, almost everyone was doing that, and now thieves are breaking in to get the keys to unlock the wheels. HIDE YOUR KEYS BETTER!

If this car has been here for a while you would think at some point a cop would have passed by and made some type of inquiry. Nope a car sits on bricks on a main thoroughfare and no one gives a shit.

Like the way the City expects you to report everything to get it fixed, like no police or sanitation people ever pass by and see these cars. Sure they have more important things to do. Missing signs never get replaced or potholes fixed, trees trimmed. etc unless reported, and then you still have to wait months. How about the City being proactive for a change instead of just reactive. I don’t feel like spending my days reporting everything I see that needs to be reported.

Of course I know I’m asking too much. After all our taxes and other charges and fees are so low. I should just be glad if something ever gets fixed.

So the solution here is to call the city and have the cars “removed?” Have you considered that the owners can’t afford new rims and tires and by going through insurance the premiums might go up? How about we deal with the assholes who double park along whole blocks at a time during street cleaning? Or even better, we have night patrols to keep the assholes off the street at night?

I think the problem is that, as in the case of this car, there appear to be license plates on the car. NYPD and Sanitation will not mark a car for removal if there are plates on.

put a drop of loctite on the threads too. only way that rim is coming off is with an impact gun.

Then how do you change a tire on the road if you get a flat?

  • Frank Rizzo

Good idea Gene. That way you cant take of your own wheel if you get a flat.
First of all its a non-alternate side street, so its no ones business how long it takes for the owner to buy new wheels for their car. Why should the city tow it?

In case someone knows the owner, found a set of wheels for the Murano on craigslist.
    Hopefully they arent stolen… http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/pts/2292920592.html

      damn son, $900…..kinda steep…

    • gene

It comes off. just keep a pipe in your trunk for leverage on the tire iron.

  • RomanM

This individual got all four tires and rims stolen (not to mention his car is being supported on cinder blocks or rocks, which is messing up his exterior). Have some sympathy and leave them alone.

The car (or whats left of it) is gone now from that spot.
