From the NY Post:

Two cops were injured when their patrol vehicle overturned when they were broadsided by another vehicle in Sheepshead Bay earlier today.

An NYPD housing bureau sergeant and one police officer were driving in a marked Ford SUV on Nostrand Avenue around 8:30 a.m when a silver Pontiac Bonneville rammed into the driver’s side of the car, witnesses said.

The impact caused the SUV to tip onto the passenger side, pinning the officers inside the wreck.

“I ran over and tried but you couldn’t open the door to get them out,” said Greta Miller, an NYPD crossing guard for PS 52 who saw the accident. “I ran to the school to get help,” she said.

The driver of the Pontiac was issued a summons for failure to yield, and the officers were transported to Lutheran Hospital for minor injuries, the Post reports.

Below is the information we originally reported, which has since been corrected with information from police and media sources.

A collision between a police vehicle and another car left two officers injured on Nostrand Avenue and Voorhies Avenue, with the NYPD vehicle overturned.

A neighbor described the scene as “horrible” after witnessing the police officers loaded into ambulances, and said both officers looked like they were in bad condition. The westbound Belt Parkway was temporarily shut down to aid in their transport to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. when the civilian car ran a stop sign and clipped the police vehicle, according to a neighbor. It’s still unknown whether the police vehicle was responding to a call and was using its sirens.

The civilian’s vehicle was damaged in the front, and it’s unclear if anyone in the car was injured.

We’re not quite sure what caused this NYPD car to overturn on Nostrand Avenue and Voorhies Avenue, but we have heard that it involved another car. Officers are still inside the vehicle, and we’re not sure if anyone has been hurt.

*It appears an officer has been hurt and is being transported to Coney Island Hospital. The Belt Parkway West has been shut down between Voorhies Avenue and Ocean Parkway.

This happened at around 8:45 a.m. and was still there as of 9:10 a.m. We’ll fill you in as we find out more.

Thanks to Tina M. for the tip.

I don’t blame the cops for coming to the aid of their own, but that said, yeah, I had sort of the same reaction– like, hey, if I wanted to commit a crime or torch something this morning in Sheepshead Bay, it woulda been NO PROBLEM…because all our Finest were in one place for a good 90 minutes this morning…

We’ve all had problems with uncooperative police. However, this post is not the place to air those grievances. For all you know this was a stellar officer with a spotless record. All the info is not available, and all that we do know is two police officers were hurt – possibly seriously. Let’s not make jokes, please. Thank you.

Can someone point out where the stop sign is? I believe there is a light at this intersection. So the cops are saying that the person ran a red light and hit them. I wonder if there are any cameras around to see what really happened.

    • BrooklynBus

That’s correct. There is a signal at that corner, unless the accident happened mid-block and there is they are talking about a stop sign at E 29 or the other side of Nostrand.

      • Local Broker

I dont see how that can happen. You can see in the picture that its clearly the corner of Nostrand. I dont know how it happened or whose at fault but a stop sign was not involved. I also dont think there are stop signs on either corner before this intersection.

        • BrooklynBus

Not on Nostrand, but there are stop signs all along Voorhies. But not knowing exactly which corner was involved and the directions the cars were traveling at the time, it’s hard to speculate what exactly happened.

          • Local Broker

I know but the 2 corners before you hit Nostrand from either direction on Voorhies there arent any stop signs.

    • levp

There shoud be a front-facing camera in the cop car. Sometimes, however, recordings “disappear” or get “corrupted”…

    Paul Harvey….

A Policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.
Gulled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscore instances of dishonesty and brutality because they are “new”. What they really mean is that they are exceptional, unusual, not commonplace.
Buried under the frost is the fact: Less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. That’s a better average than you’d find among clergy!
What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is once the most needed and the most unwanted. He’s a strangely nameless creature who is “sir” to his face and “fuzz” to his back
He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.
    But…If the policeman is neat, he’s conceited; if he’s careless, he’s a bum. If he’s pleasant, he’s flirting;if not, he’s a grouch.
He must make an instant decision which would require months for a lawyer to make.
But…If he hurries, he’s careless; if he’s deliberate, he’s lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued.
The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn’t hurt.He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being “brutal”. If you hit him, he’s a coward. If he hits you, he’s a bully.
A policeman must know everything-and not tell. He must know where all the sin is and not partake.
A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding.
But…If he catches the criminal, he’s lucky; if he doesn’t, he’s a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull; if he doesn’t, he’s a dullard. The policeman must chase a bum lead to a dead-end, stake out ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen-but refused to remember.
The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.
And, of course, he’d have to be genius….For he will have to feed a family on a policeman’s salary.

failure to yield? so he didnt run the stop sign? he was doing every day normal driving, a crazed cop car comes out of the blue… he hits them and gets a tkt…failed to yield…. if he ran the stop sign you know he woulda been hit with a shit ton more tkts and such…. storys coming together but still completely in the dark

It doesnt say who ran the red. Just because it was the cop who was hit doesnt mean he had the right of way.

Folks the story states “The driver of the Pontiac was issued a summons for failure to yield” to me that sound like the cops were passing ona red light and the other driver didn’t stop to let them pass even though he had a green presumably the cops will clim they had lights and sirens on. The story however doesn’t state that they were responding to any particular incident.

    • Anonymous

The police around here have been patrolling lately with lights on & no sirens — a woman was just murdered around here, guns, knives, what-not.

I’m glad the cops are here, I hope these men and/or women will be ok.

Two accidents on Voorhies ave within a week – all within 2 blocks of each other…
For more then a year residents of Sheepshead Bay area along Voorhies ave were complaining to the Community Board 15 that the traffic along the Voorhies Ave is so dense that it creates danger to the pedestrians, drivers and children who go to ps52 school located on the corner of Voorhies ave and E. 29 St. THE PROPOSED and approved PLAN TO BUILD THE MOSQUE on Voorhies ave between 28 St. and 29 St is right in the vicinity of the accidents. This project WILL INCREASE the trafiic and fatalities and that is why this project is wrong for this location. All this logic and arguments fell on death ears of CB 15 which chooses to do nothing when it wants to do nothing and becomes very active on any other projects in the SheepsheadBay area.
Here is 2nd accident on Voorhes Ave within a week but who cares ! Lives of children will be endangered – but who gives a shit !
In spite of officially published number of 127 people filed in a Mosque plan, in effect if all 3 floors are used, the full capacity of the proposed mosque is over 300 people. So, don’t tell me that all this 300 people will be walking to the mosque. Even if only 10 cars(very conservative estimate) will be place along the Voorhies ave you are going to create a massive disruptions and increased possibilities of more accidents. Now, Department of Building – DOB officially opened 45 day period of public challenge to this project which ends Dec. 9, 2010. No, DOB is not doing it out of goodness of their hearts – this is actually NYC law.
If you care, voice your objection and file your challenge. If you need help to do so,
e-mail to info@baypeople.org. Mention that you want to participate in public challenge to building of the mosque or go to http://www.BayPeople.org to get more information. Hopefully, the authority will step in to stop this insanity before more people will get hurt !

        Also:

        Good people = Bay People

War = Peace, Ignorance = Strength, Slavery = Freedom

      • BrooklynBus

Same logic in Manhattan Beach. Accident on Shore Blvd = Move planters off Oriental Blvd. Bus Kills Kid = Move Planters off Oriental Blvd.

        • levp

Now that DOT *is* moving the planters, what’s next? “Zebra stripes obstruct driver’s vision”…

          • BrooklynBus

The zebra stripes are another story. Those should go because they did not accomplish their purpose which was to make it impossible to speed by making the street more congested, When traffic gets heavy, cars just drive on the zebra stripes as if they are not there or illegally pass on the right. It also makes no sense for you to have to stop every time the car in front wants to make a left turn.

It is also difficult for the bus drivers when they have to make two stops in a row so they ignore them also in those cases. The TWU even protested the first week threatening to not allow their drivers to drive on Oriental Blvd.

Most people are confused by them also. Further, you shouldn’t have a regulation that forces you to beak the law by going through them in order to park legally. Show me where in the Drivers’ Manual is a statement that says someone can cross zebra stripes for the purpose of parking.

Last week I even saw an NYPD Traffic Enforcement car speeding along the zebra stripes.

          • levp

OK, I’ll agree with your argument that the stripes in this case create more problems than they solve.

Perhaps, a combination of traffic light(s), better parking facilities, rush hour bus-only lane, separate “limited” bus service from KCC and photo enforcement would be the answer to problems in MB.

          • BrooklynBus

I really can’t think of any locations where additional traffic signals would help anything. They only would cause more accidents, inconvenience and pollution.
More stop signs maybe, but not more lights.

I don’t see how you can get more parking facilities. A bus terminal inside the college would help, but the college is against that. As I’ve stated before what is needed is better education. (People need to learn what a flashing yellow means and that pedestrians have the right of way.) Most of all some enforcement against speeding is needed. A ticket blitz once every six-months when someone complains and no enforcement at all the rest of the time is not a solution. Neither is ticketing someone going 31 mph to raise revenue. An empty parked scooter also doesn’t fool anyone.

          • levp

            1. I’m highly skeptical that the people who are driving on the “zebra” stripes would obey a stop sign. A traffic light, on the other hand, allows for automated photo enforcement.

            2. It was stated here previously that a portion of this traffic is created by people (presumably, KCC students) trying to find parking. Hence, my call for parking facilities.

            3. Not only a terminal, but I would call for a separate rush hour service, like “limited”, for connection to the subway via Brighton Beach and/or Sheepshead Bay stations. The issue of inadequate bus service for passengers who are not KCC students was mentioned here before; this would address that issue.

            4. Agreed on enforcement. But if 61st Precinct does not have resources to do that, more automated photo enforcement should be used. There are devices to help enforcing bus-only lanes, speed limit, traffic lights, etc.

          • BrooklynBus

            1. Yes, they wouldn’t come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Virtually no one does. But it would slow them down to 5 mph. I really doubt it if they would flagrantly run stop signs. I’m against automated photo enforcement because I have not been convinced it makes things any safer. In fact they’ve increased rear enders because the yellow lights in NYC are too short at many intersections. They supposed to be at least three seconds long but they are never calibrated so they range from i/2 a second to three seconds. I’ve seen a few that are only about a quarter of a second. Once I blinked and a light went straight from green to red. I missed the yellow when I blinked!

2 I don’t agree with more parking facilities but like the suggested idea to reduce the days and times for alternate side which would in effect double the amount of parking spaces four days a week.

            3. The MTA already provides very high amounts of school special buses to Brighton and Sheepshead Bay Station. If you go there around 2:45, you will see as many as 12 buses waiting to be put into service.

            4. We don’t need a bus only lane, just two lanes for traffic as was before the zebra stripes. Why shouldn’t the 61 precinct have enough resources? MB is a part of the 61. Why do you rarely even see a police car outside of summer beach days? What about all the Traffic enforcement agents who are on Brighton Beach Avenue every day giving parking tickets? Don’t they also have the power to catch speeders? They are called “Traffic Enforcement Agents’ not “Parking Enforcement Agents” but I’ve never seen any one of them give someone a moving violation. If all they do is parking, then change their name.

always something.. my son goes to a school in bensonhurst and we were late because we use the belt pkway going west and every entrance was blocked we had to take the streets…. not saying its not a good thing that they were being helped but 1- I DONT THINK YOU NEED 6 POLICE CARS 3 FIRE TRUCKS AND I THINK I SAW 4 ABULANCES AND 2- IF OUR KIDS OR OUR PARENTS , OURSELVES OR OUR NEIGHBORS GOT SERIOUSLY INJURED (LETS SAY GETTING HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER ANDALMOST DYING..GOD FORBID) YOU THINK THEY WOULD EVEN TRY OR EVEN HAVE A SINGLE THOUGHT IN THEIR MINDS TO SHUT DOWN THE FREAKIN BELT PARKWAY SO THEY CAN GET HELP BEFORE THEY BLEED TO DEATH OR DIE FROM OTHER INJURIES THEY SUSTAINED? NOPE THEY WOULDNT. AND I HAVE SEEN IT MANY TIMES IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD (AMONGST OTHER THINGS).. LIVING HERE 28 YRS. ITS VERY RARE TO FIND A COP THAT IS ACTUALLY DECENT AND NOT “CROOKED”. THEY ARE PAID TO PROTECT US, INSTEAD THEY REALLY ONLY LOOK OUT FOR THEMSELVES… MAYBE THEY REALIZED THIER PAY ISNST ENOUGH TO RISK THEIR LIVES OVER. INSTEAD OF HELPING TO PREVENT OR STOP INCODENTS FROM HAPPENING THEY WAIT FOR IT TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN FOR THEM TO “DO THEIR JOBS”

    • BrooklynBus

and spend far too much time writing parking tickets than doing other productive things to cut down on crime and accidents.

  • BrooklynBus

The information from the NY Post really adds very little to the story. We still don’t know who was in the wrong. Who had the green light? Were there lights and sirens? Was anyone speeding?
