When we heard the following news, we were certain it would be followed by a Notify NYC alert telling us to beware of low-flying pigs arriving from a frozen-over Hell.

But no, none of that happened. And we’re happy to say that the Manhattan-bound platforms at Avenue U and Neck Road are now open – meaning a full restoration of service on both sides. Work is still being done and the two-year project is not yet complete. The MTA’s page on the Brighton Line Restoration project says the final touches will be in Early 2011. The project was slightly delayed, as the original completion date was supposed to be in 2010 – but at least we’ve got our service back.

Further down the line, Manhattan-bound platforms at Avenue M and Avenue H will remain closed until Fall 2011.

Tip o’ the hat to GerritsenBeach.net for spotting this before us.

Well, they did keep their deadline in important terms, service is now fully restored to the station in October of 2010. If memory serves that was to be the full date of completion.

Whatever is planned for the space where the LIRR railroad tracks were is going to long in coming, I suspect. I hope they secure that area for safety.

what is great is that you can now see from the manhattan bound side the jerkoffs who already vandalized the roof of the coney island bound side with graffiti. good job Sheepshead Bay’ers! Way to ruin something new!

    • Georgia

I can not believe it either wow think of all the overtime they have or double shifts or 24hr work to keep the city deadline lol.

what caused the delay in the project was the fact that NYCT was being very slow on the Coney Island-bound side of Avenue U and Neck Road. They were closed in December 2008, but I did not see any dismantling work until late January 2009 and the platforms were not completely demolished until April. Having realized their mistake, NYCT began work on the rest of the station rehabiliations a lot quicker. Heck, it has only been a month and most of the platforms at Avenues H, J, and M and Kings Highway are gone. That artist’s rendition of the new stations may not become real until at least 2013 because while the platforms will be in service when Brighton express service is restored next year, other work like stationhouse, crew area, and elevator installations at Kings Highway still needs be done.

Do you work for the MTA by any chance?

        • winson

no, people say I should due to my strong knowledge in mass transit, but I do not want to

          • http://www.nedberke.com Ned Berke

Yeah, you wouldn’t fit in, what with all that knowledge of mass transit…

any guesses as to how long it will take to get working elevators at KingsHighway?

    • BrooklynBus

The signs at Sheepshead Bay were never changed to show that all trains now stop on the local track northbound. I also wonder why the B doesn’t run express to Kings Highway since Avenue U and Neck Road are now open in both directions.

      • winson

i was asking the same thing about the Sheepshead Bay signs too. They were changed from “All trains skip Neck Rd, Av U, Av M, & Av H” to “All trains skip Avenue M and Avenue H,” but did not move them to the northbound local track. Hopefully, that gets fixed soon. As for the B train, making it run express will create bunches and gaps. Having B and Q trains run on the same track for the entire line provides the most consistent service possible. Besides, skipping two stops is not going to save you much time and the express tracks need to be used for workers to rest, go to other stations, etc, because the reconstruction project is technically not completed.

Took an artistic photo from the new platform: http://dereference.org/neckrd.jpg

      • Kon

        Artistic?

      • Barry

Maybe you meant “autistic”? Just because there’s no ugly person in the middle of the photo with a grin, an “artistic” photo this does not make. If you would’ve gotten down on the rails with a fisheye lens and took a picture of the long platforms, that would be closer to artistic.

Don’t listen to them. Anonymous commenters on a website are hardly the standard by which you should judge your work. Thanks for posting.

        • Larry

Thanks, appreciate all the comments regardless. I was going for depth and balanced composition like nolastname said, might have worked a little better if I had something other than a cameraphone on me. Anyone want to donate to my DSLR fund? :)

You don’t need a DSLR. If you want some of that functionality get a hybrid, which will cost you a lot less. You can’t change lenses, but you still have quite a bit of control over settings.

Click on my name. The camera I use is a Kodak Z712. Half of the result is in the camera, having some editing skills accomplishes the rest.

This 10MP 10x zoom Z915 is currently selling for $199.

            http://store.kodak.com/store/ekconsus/en_US/pd/Z915_Digital_Camera/productID.145103400

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with using an automatic mode until you become comfortable with all the controls. That could take a long time. So a more expensive camera is often a poor choice unless one is extremely knowledgeable about settings and other controls.

You can get cheap DSLRs, just don’t go for the newest models. I just picked up a refurbished Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI for $320 off Amazon. Without a lens though, since I already have those.

            • http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001 Lisanne!

But that’s it. The lens will add at least another hundred to the price. And unless one is very familiar with using such cameras the extra sensitivity and control won’t be of that much benefit.

There are some people who can get great pictures from even a point and shoot.

I love the sound of expensive guitars. But I once saw a musician take a $20 learners guitar (this was in the mid seventies-I doubt a guitar could be bought that cheaply now) and make incredible music with it. Skill is what really counts.

Yep, didn’t say he needed one to be a great photographer, just saying they all don’t require your first-born to purchase.

            • Larry

Appreciate all the advice. I’ve had some really great shots with my cousin’s Nikon D3000. I was thinking of getting one of those but apparently the kit lens sucks and I wouldn’t be able to borrow my friend’s prime lenses unless I get at least a D90 body. Another friend of mine is letting me borrow his Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 so we’ll see how that goes.

            • http://www.flickr.com/knightmare6 Knightmare6

Depends on what you do, I mean the kit lens is fine for a general lens to start off with. I used mine for some time, before I started getting different lenses for different types of photography and then I sold my kit lens off.

I like the depth. Well balanced too.

      • http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001 Lisanne!

You’ve captured the sense of new against old. The emptiness of the platform emphasizes that few had walked on this restored platform at the time you took the photo.

That is why it is definitely ARTISTIC!

        • a good neighbor

took the train this morning around 7 am and the northbound skipped both ave. u and neck road. they weren’t skipped yesterday when i took it around 8 am. weird.

          • Kon

Did they stop running B local by any chance?

          • http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001 Lisanne!

I don’t like that too much. Apparently they didn’t do a proper inspection and found a few things that needed immediate attention. Hopefully that’s done.
