For God’s sake, stop being such friggin’ wusses and make use of the open threads. Bitch about stuff. Complain. Yammer on. Just stop looking to me to lead the way ’cause, for goodness sake, I just don’t have stuff to rant about every Monday. I get most of that out on the in between.

So. Just do it. Whine away.

And, to put you on the spot, here’s a list of people I’m looking to hear from at the bare minimum:

Parking pigs who take up 2 spaces. Parking spots should be painted and tickets given to those overstep the bounds (allowance for vehicle size). Good revenue for the city, more parking for us.

  • Al Knowles

Pedestrians – use the sidewalk. No more walking in the streets(some in the damn middle, until some car comes along to beep you over.) It’s fine if you are walking to the car, but use the damn sidewalk until you get to the edge of your car.

Also, if you are crossing 2 streets at a time, make sure that you have the green for both. Don’t cross against the red to get to a corner, then decide to cross against the turning red light on the perpendicular crossing. It’s even worse when people time it to cross against red twice in one intersection.

Some of the sidewalks are far more dangerous to walk on than the streets.

Tho in honor of Ned’s request: I realized last night that Manhattan beach has street cleaning twice a week for each side of the street. Really? There are fewer houses per foot on those blocks. I hate Manhattan Beach!

Don’t get me started. Here’s one you haven’t heard. I’m starting to suspect that Parks Department employees are cutting out early. Shouldn’t they be working from 9-5? The Manhattan Beach Park is technically open until 9 PM and I thought the bathrooms were open until 5 after the summer. The playground is full with families and after about 3 or 3:30 everything is all locked up with people trying to get into the locked bathrooms every few minutes. Years ago, they used to post the hours the bathrooms were open but no more. I wonder how long this has been going on.

Another thing. As long as the beach supposed to be open until 9 PM, the police start blaring their sirens at 7 any day the temperature is over 90 degrees telling people they have to leave by 8 which is an outright lie. If you are willing to pay $15 to park your car you should at least be able to stay until closing time.

And one I told you last night. Instead of using 311 to solve problems, the City is using it as a revenue raiser by ticketing people when inspectors come out to investigate problems.

    • Al Knowles

They changed most playground hours to close at dusk. So, since we are now enjoying earlier sunsets, we get less park hours. You can see their hours posted at http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_about/about_parks.html

No excuses for the bathrooms. Really should have bathrooms open, especially since there is a caretaker for most of them.

      • BrooklynBus

That’s what I am saying. It seems the caretakers are leaving early so they are closing the bathrooms before they should.

how about this. restaurant/lounge OPM/KRISHA on emmons, near brigham st, uses a dead-end street by comfort inn and….ahem….Lyghthouse as their private valet parking lot. this is especially true on tursdays, fridays and OH god, saturday and sunday nights. Fri-Sun night they even have enforcers sitting in their cars at the end of the dead end street trying to intimidate some drivers, while telling others “it’s restaurant Valet tonight”. BULLSHIT. if you dare leave your car there anyway, you will find it deeply scratched, sometimes all around. Most cars are scratched with a screwdriver, so they are quite deep. At least 10 brigham street residents had this happen to them, myself included. At least a dozen people i know from brigham street apartment buildings had the same done to their car. 61 apparently doesn’t think it’s serious enough yet. Investigate that!!! ;-)

And it doesn’t matter whether its Democrats or Republicans. (though the Rs have a bigger list) All sorts of things are allowed to go on that one would think are unconstitutional. They’re allowed because we are in “state of emergency. Of course even the Clinton administration implemented policy that eroded our various rights; that was before 9/11.

        • levp

I have to say that I categorically disagree.
This is not to imply that civil disobedience and other forms of direct action do not have their place – but one has to exhaust more “primary” ways of effecting changes.
In other words: letters first, protests second, civil disobedience third, revolutions – hopefully, never (I had enough of these already).

          • http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001 Lisanne!

I was thinking that the best direct action would come from influencing those who suggest policy. While Congress could enact specific law that would curb a lot of these abuses currently much of this is buried in the Homeland Security Act. The provisions that allow these abuses are not “Musts” they are “Mays”.

So what do we do? Well, for starters I’d be asking those who make a career out of protecting our rights. The ACLU comes to mind immediately. While writing letters is effective when done on a mass, organized scale it is of little effect when dealing with issues that are important, and yet not something that gets all the right attention. In such cases the way to achieve change is by helping out the focused parties.

This is an issue that needs more and constant exposure. But it is one that media is touchy about handling, except in rare cases when an individual situation becomes newsworthy.

        PEACE

        • Anonymous

I am against war. I should say “against starting new wars”. I have lost a cousin in Iraq last year. He was there because his country asked him to be. It was in the news, he was shot in the head, DEAD, he and the soldier he was on patrol with both dead.I did not want him in a war zone but he is American and has the freedom to make choices.
No matter what, we do have to finish what we started.
Yes, I want the troops home, I support them not war.
I can control who makes better roast beef, war is part of human nature.

          • levp

I am deeply sorry for your loss. We’ve got to change that human nature to stop stories like these…

What drives me insane is that we went through this before (by “we” I mean former Soviet Union) – in the 80′s. Thats when US was supporting Taliban.
My ex-brother-in-law was an Army truck driver. Got a traumatic brain injury after what we now know as IED exploded next to his truck. Received almost no care when he came back. Sounds familiar? Kept waking up every night. Started drinking “to forget”… It only goes downhill from there.
And Condoleezza Rice was supposed to be an expert on Russia!

Everyone should find a documentary called “Body of War”.
(for example, start with part 1 here:

and after that click on the next part on the right side in “Related”)

It is about Tomas Young, a guy from Kansas who enlisted on 9/13/2001. Was sent to Iraq. Drove in a Humvee without any armor or protection otherwise. (While the guy who supposedly suppled armor to Pentagon was throwing a $1mil bat-mitzvah for his daughter at Cipriani – remember?) Got shot in the spine, woke up in Walter Reed paralyzed from the chest down.
At one point he says: “We all knew you can get killed. We were OK with that. We didn’t think that you came back like this.”
There is a part where his story is interspersed with the Senate roll call on the resolution to authorize use of force against Iraq in 2002 – that does hit you like a real hammer… Senator Clinton – Aye! This is where I start to feel nik the rat’s outrage…
If your heart doesn’t cry while watching this film, you ain’t got a heart.

I only drink on rare occasions these days. And since I started doing that (about 20 years ago) I’ve never drank excessively.

After one drank I’ll switch to a sweet non-alcoholic beverage. That may not work for everyone, some people get sick from anything sweet after rinking even a small amount. Cranberry juice works for those people.

Pointless traffic lights that keep popping up. (I’m looking at you Avenue R and Coleman Street as the latest nonsensical light going up.) I can understand placing a traffic light on a busy intersection. But, when you put them on side streets what point does it serve except to cause havoc and traffic that sticks out and blocks other streets because they are out of sync. These things cause nothing but more accidents. At least if you are going to put these up, have all the side street lights flash yellow after 9pm weekdays and maybe 11pm on weekends. The ones that are there right next to the schools should flash yellow between 6pm and 6am weekdays and 6pm friday through 6am monday.

    • BrooklynBus

They keep popping up because the people keep asking for them. When I was growing up, it was enough just to have a crossing guard in front of a school. Now every school must have a traffic light in front. DOT thinks its a great idea to have them functioning at all hours because they prevent people from speeding especially when they turn red when the one right before turns green. You can thank all the “traffic calmers” for this nonsense.

Thing pissing me off the most right now is how the feds are still going to arrest people in cali even though weeds gonna be legal. the federal government has gotten out of control. WE made them, and now they are taking over. too many people do no remember the constitution and too many more think its too old to be valid. people think federal law should trump state law…. i think these types of people should be deported to australia.

another thing pissing me off is the overall intellect of people in america. it seems cool to be dumb these days and its even apparent in the teachers and politicians.

im pretty pissed that america is going down the tubes and so is the rest of the planet (by planet, i mean humans).

PS: FALLOUT NEW VEGAS AT MIDNIGHT BABY!

    • levp

State vs. Federal control is a two-way street – some laws you like, some you don’t. But be careful what you wish for.
For example, when a politician says that Civil Rights should be a State issue, he means only one thing…
Thats why Federal law does trump State law in case there is any conflict:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_preemption

      • http://twitter.com/nicktherat nick the rat

sure, ill have a tkt ready for you soon :D
the states made the fed, and now the feds are trying to dictate the states. america was built on the foundation that the old systems with one ruling state didn’t work and sucked.
if some states think driving around with a gun and an open beer can (like down south somewhere) i think it should be their right to decide this. every state in america are completely different.
when a politician says something about states deciding civil rights, the people should decide whether that politician should stay in power or not. but we cant do that because we do not get receipts when we vote, and some people arent aloud to run due to HAVING to have money for a campaign.
basically we are fucked, but all i can say are FUCK THE FED, and a huge part of every other ruling party

The only thing these states have to do is to follow up on the promises of some of their politicians (like Texas Governor) and secede from the Union. I can’t wait!

          • Local Broker

Texas is great. You go buy a gun no questions asked, no registration required, you can keep it in your car anywhere you go and the second someone tries to rob you shoot them dead again no questions asked. Now thats America.

          • levp

If it works in Texas, good for them.

On the other hand, their murder rate (per 100,000 people) is 5.4 (current death row population: 337), while in the state of New York the same murder rate is 4 (current death row population: 0).

So I (heart) NY, thank you.

            And its 5.0 in NYC.

          • levp

OK, but then we would have to compare city to city.

For example, New York City and Dallas/New York City and Houston:
            http://www.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=New+York&s1=NY&c2=Dallas&s2=TX
            http://www.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=New+York&s1=NY&c2=Houston&s2=TX

Latest 2006 Crimes per 100,000 People:
New York, NY     Dallas, TX     Houston, TX
            Murder: 7.3     15          18.2

Im not getting into it with you about this. I was just using a little example of freedoms that we should have but dont. You are to much of an ANALyst to argue with. People kill people not guns.

          • levp

Ha! I am!! What can I do – I work with numbers all day long…

But you are right about people – so bear with me for one more minute:
            bad people without guns = scratched cars and poop on the sidewalk;
bad people with guns = murder.
            Anal statistics seems to confirm…

          • Eitan

In principle, I think people should be allowed to own firearms with few restrictions. In practice, however, I wouldnt feel safe knowing that most of the morons I pass by on the street were armed. And everyone knows that regardless of any laws, ‘bad people’ will always have guns. Its really not a black and white situation, there’s a lot of factors.

For instance, there was one case I read about a few months back where a plainclothes officer subdued a man who had stabbed someone in a store and then fled into the street. Numerous pedestrians witnessed the event and the takedown, and numerous reported not knowing at first that the screaming man being chased and tackled was actually a murder suspect. Now, imagine if every Harry Dick and Jane had a magnum on them and decided this was the day they pretent do be superman and stop the ‘bad guy’. They would have shot the plainclothes officer who was heriocally taking down a psychopathic murderer.

I think there should be restrictions as well but not as hard as it is in NYC. I am not saying people should walk around like the wild west. It could take over a year to get licensed in NYC for a handgun. I have friends in FL, CA and TX that own guns for recreation and at them same time can protect their homes and property if necessary.

          • Local Broker

What about bats and knives? Cars dont kill or injure people dumb ass drivers do.

          • levp

Agreed on cars. The original idea behind driver licenses was exactly about that.

AFAIK, certain type of knives are already regulated/restricted.
See, for example, 15 USC CHAPTER 29 – MANUFACTURE, TRANSPORTATION, OR DISTRIBUTION OF SWITCHBLADE KNIVES:

How did you discuss things with people before there were links. Did you go to the library do some research copy it and bring it to them. Without any stats just your personal opinion do you think its ok for a normal law abiding citizen to own a handgun with out having to go through a year long screening by some asshole with a badge?

          • levp

It was much harder in the old times… Yes, make copies in the library was the rule… LOL

On the subject: there has to be a compromise between ease of procedure for a law abiding citizen and enough complications for mental patients/convicts/revolutionaries.
I don’t know what exactly waiting period should be, but there should be one to cool you down once you decide to shoot your wife and children; and there should be some background check to see if you are on no-fly list (in many states Osama bin Laden can “legally” buy a gun – for example, at a gun show).

But New York City is not a gun-friendly place (whether under Guiliani or Bloomberg), I’ll give you that.

          • Eitan

            nor should it be.

          • http://twitter.com/nicktherat nick the rat

bad people with anything = not good
cant go around killing all the bad people though
now, the BLACK MARKET is something we CAN do something about.
if theres no need for one, it goes away

          • Anonymous

That’s the street, Texas does not own claim.
There are plenty of guns here, no ?’s, no reg, they are kept..that is the problem.

          • Local Broker

Yeah but its legal there along with a number of other states.

The ever increasing amount of 99cent stores in the area. Come on already, how many do we need? Will they only stop after every other store on the block is a 99cent store? How many customers can these stores possible get that they feel the need to open more of them, and the landlords of the properties think that it is a good idea to allow this to happen? It is significantly reducing the value of our neighborhood and it must stop. There is one opening up where Glick’s Kosher used to be, wonder how well they will do.

Or the markets specializing in Eastern European foods? They all sell the same shit. Enough already.

I’d like to know is why the Obama Admin approved a hike in the amount of ethanol gasoline is allowed to contain. It’s rising from 10% to 15%. This will drive up the price of basic food items and I am not convinced that it will not harm my car in the long run. The whole ethanol craze is based on faulty science but unfortunately it is embraced by the current administration as being the solution to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. I think the scientists determined that ethanol and the production of it is far from “clean energy”. Those corn belt states sure have a tight hold on Washington.

    The other thing that

    • levp

There is no mandated requirement to sell this type of fuel, however – so I don’t think we will see it any time soon (in NY, probably never):
      http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-10-13/epa-allows-15-ethanol-in-gasoline-for-newer-cars.html

Ethanol craze didn’t start with Obama (and I’m sure won’t end with him, either).
Same for the corn syrup in all your food (literally, all).

Candidates need to campaign in Iowa…

Solution: elections reform (has to include public financing + removal of electoral college). This would take care of both lobbyists and Iowa.

Dog poop, jay walkers, graffiti, loud music from cars dropping off people @ 2am., double parked cars waiting for someone when there is a spot 2 car lengths away, drivers that do not signal or pull out past a stop sign, children screaming (not just yelling) when they play, people throwing garbage out of their cars, learn how to say excuse me folks, neighbors that do not know what a broom is, Bloomie’s cross walk B.S.,Bloomie,the parks dept. not grooming trees, faulty alarm boxes, sewers sinking, and me. Wish I did not let this shit bother me.

      That about sums it up…

hi Levp. If the quality of life issues would have been dealt with over the last several years maybe people would not have turned into the arrogant, selfish adults they are.

We need a sandwich shop in the neighborhood. Somewhere you can grab a great sandwich, have a seat and bull shit all day.

umm… Bagel Boy? on Ave Z and like 16th lol or even better….. Ave Z and coney island Bagel shop is awesome! open 24 hours too thats as good as it’s gonna get lol

      • Anonymous

I guess I should have said a GOOD sandwich shop. I don’t like the places where all the sandwiches are pre-made.

Bagel Boy doesn’t have tables only counters and no public bathroom. The Bagel Shop on Z has tables, but the food sucks.

We need somewhere like Hale and Hearty. http://www.haleandhearty.com/

My reply to levp mysteriously disappeared yesterday…

I thanked him for posting the following links – this was his reply to my earlier posting urging sheepsheadbites readers to write their president, senators, congressmen, etc to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq:

    Right on!

And there are local resources to guide:
    Brooklyn For Peace http://www.brooklynpeace.org/
    Peace Action New York http://www.panys.org/
Iraq Vets Against the War http://www.ivaw.org/new-york-city
VoteVets (not local, but deserves your attention) http://www.votevets.org/index_html

My reply to him was removed! – why Ned?
I saw it posted here, and nolastname referenced it!

    I wrote (to levp):

Thanks for posting those links. It’s good to know that someone cares more about our neighbors’ sons and daughters coming home from Afghanistan in BODY-BAGS (THEY don’t allow that in the media anymore)
than who makes a better roast beef sandwich – R&R or B&C.

    added today:

THEY don’t show the images of our soldiers coming home in boxes on t.v. or in the papers anymore. Our government won’t allow it!!! – remember Vietnam?
It was those images (and the draft) that got people out protesting and ultimately ending the war.

See the film: “Why We Fight”

    BEWARE THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!

No, seriously. I don’t know. It’s been doing a lot of funky stuff lately, but I’ll see what I can do about it.

how about we do a story next week about Grandparents Driving, and how DANGEROUS to the Road they are?

DMV needs to give people over the age of 70 a NEW DRIVING TEST!
