• Two Asian eateries were closed recently by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for unsanitary conditions, one of which received a staggering 105 violation points.

New Star Seafood Restaurant at 1217-1221 Avenue U was closed after a laundry list of violations was issued in at least 15 areas. Just a sampling of the complaints includes evidence of mice and roaches, food was not protected from potential contamination, hot food was not held at adequate temperatures, food preparation surfaces were not cleaned, and handwashing areas even lacked soap. Workers were even scolded in the DOH report for their personal cleanliness, with the inspector observing soiled garments and lack of hair restraints.

The restaurant was shut down on Friday, October 15, but a sign in the door (placed next to the DOH sign) said they were closed for renovation and would be reopened yesterday. As of today they are still closed.

Meanwhile, Yoshinoya Sushi at 1741 Sheepshead Bay Road (off of Shore Parkway) was closed yesterday for mice, rats and roaches, as well as improper storage of cold food items. They accumulated 45 points, largely for critical violations.

A few years back I walked by this place and glanced down to the bottom of the open basement door-things and what I saw made me sick. At the bottom of the dirt blackened stairs laying bare on a dingy tile floor was a whole pig, in all its dead, disgusting glory, with a rail thin worker grasping it with one hand, a green garden hose in his other, spraying it. He was wearing yellow rubber rain boots, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and his white work outfit was painted an impressionistic scene of snot yellows, puke oranges, and blood reds. The puddle washing out from inside the hollow cavity of this pig was spreading across the floor, destined to eventually dry and contribute to the rancid smell constantly hovering around the area of the shop.

And let me tell you, if the sight of unrefrigerated meat hanging on crusted metal hooks, baking greenhouse-style in the windows of the shop didnt turn you off, nothing will. Congratulations to all those brave enough and strong enough to have ordered from there and survived. That meat is going into your meat containing dish. Call me old fashioned, but I keep my meat in the fridge.

Ned when was the last time you ate at this place?

I went into New Star several years ago and had one of the worst eating experiences. The manager on duty served as waiter and he did not like me and my fellow non-Chinese friend in the place. I tried to order what I wanted but he told me no I am not Chinese and wouldn’t like it and tried to get me to order something closer to American-Chinese take-out. I refused. Then later when I asked for chopsticks, he laughed and mocked me and told me it would be too hard for me to use. Then he rushed us out.

Meanwhile, just two days ago my father said Yoshinoya was delicious. Ha ha.

You are really Green when it comes to foot and specially Chinese food!

I ate there too (only though of that makes me wanna puke) and their … food I though was ok.. but the fact is that there could have been mice droppings or cooked cockroaches in your lunch special and you would eat them with out knowing it… and still have no complains! I pity the fool!

who are you kidding? if you ever worked in the restaurant business you would know mice droppings or roaches is almost impossible to get rid of. you can do it a certain extent of course but when the DOH comes and raids you. you are guarantee to get violations. These are your average restaurants, if you want a spotless clean one then don’t go there. go to one where you’ll pay out your ass for a “clean dish”.

Absolutely not true. I have a Chinese take out place right near me that has ZERO violation points and they just had an inspection.

You know why? Cause they care about their place and their food. They clean the place up and down and in every nook and cranny thru out the day and before closing.

            Place is spotless.

            • http://twitter.com/Microshock Microshock

Panda Chinese Restaurant on 20th ave and 74st. Places can very easily stay clean, it just requires being pro active.

Well, if Jesus says they’re clean, then that’s all I need

You guys have to go to Cactus – its a Chinese-Mexican place on Nostrand Avenue between Y Z. The place is immaculate, the food is great, and they always deliver (to my house, at least) in 20 minutes. Trust me!
