We receive a lot of complaints from readers about the auto repair shop on Jerome Avenue and East 21st Street. Some told us about the physical condition of the shop; others complained about cars without plates taking up parking spots on the streets around it (though no one could prove it came from this garage).

Reader David M. has had enough, and has started taking note of the conditions around the lot. He snapped the above before and after photo, and shot us a note via Facebook saying the following:

This vehicle repair shop on Jerome Ave between E21 St & E22nd St is truly an eyesore to our community. Cars without plates are always parked on the sidewalk and there are weeds that look like small trees sprouting from the sidewalk. They also don’t seem to care that the sidewalk has become a dumping ground at night. In any event, after several complaints to the Sanitation Department, they’ve finally cut all the weeds and picked up all the garbage. Let’s see if they keep it up. I’ll keep you posted.

We hope you do, David. Thanks for keeping an eye out for the community.

I can confirm the cars without plates & fake plates on salvage cars which are parked all around the shop and even sometimes south of 21st street by rite aid. I live across the street and the place really brings the neighborhood down. There are often car breakins on the side of where the picture was snapped. If you create a dirty neighborhood it will bring in more dirt as thefts. Its pshycologically proven.

Boris you hit the nail on the head. I guess that’s why this area has so many car break-ins. Trash is a magnet to trash.
      Wasn’t Trefetelli’s just hit?

write into the community board/city and say it brings urban blight to the area…

Community Board 15 is holding a Public Hearing on this issue, September 28th at 7pm at Kingsborough Community College. This was a gas station and they are now reapplying for their variance which expired in 2003.

It expired in 2003? They’ve been operating illegally since then?

Thank God! i was getting tired of having to use the other side of the street to walk instead of that sidewalk. Something really needs to be done with that space. I recently saw a petition being signed against the renewal of their gas privileges. The site makes the neighborhood look so trashy-my boyfriend saw even somebody peeing by it because of all the weeds. This is not what Sheepshead Bay is supposed to look like

The man working there seems to have the same disposition as the place.

car shop? i guess you haven’t been there in a while? its also a car wash. Not only do they take up parking spots, they also think that they can use the spot that’s right on the corner as a car wash exit. I am surprised they are able to get away with this for this long. The funny part is that they were putting together the car wash with what looked like scrap wood and tarps only to have the thing ripped apart by a wind storm.

also sheepshead bay residents think its ok not to pick up after their dogs on that part of the street.

While we are at it…what about the sidewalk along Rite-Aids parking lot on Ave Z…it is all broken up and definitely needs replacement. Also, the person who feeds the birds there is doing a dis-service to the area. We already have too many pigeons and this will bring vermin.

Then you have the cat feeder on E.21 behind the Rite-Aid parking lot. The surrounding streets have always been a dump/eye-sore. The person who painted the American flag mural on the corner helped class it up. But, otherwise it’s been a dump since litter, weeds, and dog waste really line that stretch of sidewalk for years on end.

Since we are bitching, I would like to throw under the bus those double parking drivers who visit the car shop and/or bodega on Ave Z between E.21 and E.22. It’s fine to double park, but use your damn hazards, and you might want to turn off your high beams while double parking.

Who owns the property? I am almost positive the land was contaminated and probably has to remain dormant. The property owner needs to clean it up.

If someone really, really wants the property it could all be BS.
