The photo and account below come in from reader Eitan K.:

At approximately 9pm on Avenue Y between e 23 and e 24 a chinese woman in her 60′s was struck by a vehicle. I spoke with one of her neighbors who said that they knew her, she was a very nice lady who lived there for many years, residing in a house on the corner of e 24 and Y. The woman was struck within eyesight of her home, just across the intersection as she was crossing the street. The neighbor who I spoke with said she was in very bad shape, but obviously details on her condition were not available. I watched the ambulance take her away at approx. 9:15pm. The section of avenue Y between 23 & 24 was taped off as numerous police officers were examining the scene. The driver of the car that struck her appeared to be a chinese man in his 20′s or early 30′s (it was dark) and he was speaking with the police, he remained at the scene and he was not in handcuffs when I was there at between 9:15 through 9:30. The neighbor who I spoke with also added that on this stretch of avenue Y there are no stop signs or lights, and accidents involving cars and pedestrians have been known to happen here, and she expressed a wish that a sign or a light be installed, that if there had been one tonight’s accident might have been avoided.

stop signs or lights don't matter much. what's important is for drivers to drive within speed limit and pay careful attention to the road.

Some drivers only look out for other cars as if pedestrians are invisible. I was almost hit several times because drivers were looking for cars and totally oblivious to pedestrians crossing the street right in front of them.

I've spent quite a bit of time on the surrounding blocks, and I definitely agree that there needs to be more stop signs/lights installed. People FLY down Ave Y and coming off of Bedford, it's insane. The stop signs that ARE on that stretch of road between Ocean and Nostrand aren't clearly visible sometimes.
What a sad story. I hope she recovers well.

I'm surprised there isn't a traffic light on either intersection of E.24th by the park. The Ave. X and the Ave Y intersections don't have a Stop sign on the Avenues, won't someone think of the children?

Actually I take that back, driving down Ave. Y is annoying. Only 3-way Stop sign is on E. 22 and Ave Y, where motorists either ignore or are very casual at the right-of-way towards pedestrians or to other drivers. Then between there and Nostrand, you have motorists who like to jump onto the Avenue with little regard to who is around, when coming off the side streets. Then you add in the brilliant folks who decide that walking in the street in safer than walking on the sidewalk.

Sorry, just in a ranting mood.

Too many stop signs and lights is a pain too.

When I moved back here from the city I wondered if the laws in Brooklyn were different from Manhattan. Cars seem to turn on red lights, pedestrians are not given the right of way…just saying.

Ned – since you're such an amazing blogger now (lol) is there any way you can use your spidey sense and find out if this woman survived or do they not give out that information?
