Congressman Anthony Weiner unleashed an oral onslaught on Republicans yesterday, after a bill was killed that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks.

From Huffington Post:

At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.

When the final tally was announced, there were 255 representatives for the measure, 159 against. The defeat of the bill, which would have provided free health care to those affected during the 9/11 rescue and recovery, likely means that the court system will have to settle compensation issues.

Weiner spoke right before the vote when it was clear that Republican lawmakers would stake their opposition on grounds of procedural concerns.

You're absolutely right. Those damn socialists. Those affected by these toxins should be successful enough to take care of these matters themselves. How dare they expect the government to help them. It's everyone for themselves here. That's the Anerican Way!

    Bullshit it's the American Way!

The dems couldn't have passed the bill 3 years ago and didn't.

In case I was misunderstood; I am for helping 911 workers. brightonresident apparently wasn't

Bravo, Weiner. Too bad the Republicans continue to be arrogant, self-serving haters. I hope the cops & firefighters who live in King's district will remember this day come November.

I dont understand what your comment has to do with mine.

  • brightonresident

Apparently PR, you don't understand– The Pepublicants stopped the bill and WOULDN'T give the workers the needed medical care.

Remember Christie Whitman and the EPA said the air was safe for the workers to be there!!! She was a Bush Repulicant!!!!

The Democratic party took a risk and blocked any potential Republican amendments. I'd really like to know what amendments the D's were so afraid of that they took the risk of a 2/3 vote.

    Wow! “The Gentleman WILL sit!”
That's the spine are were looking for!
Also, his office has answered EVERY letter and email that I sent. I once had called his DC office at 10pm, prepared to leave a message, and was startled to get a live person…

As for the 159 “Party of No”, I dare them to say the words “9-11″ ever again!

Because this should have been a unanimous vote! You know, like they did with PATRIOT Act in 2001, remember?
Or any number of other laws and resolutions like that (“Defund ACORN”, for instance), which I bet they don't even read.
But, for a change, this was a good one – and what happens? Shame indeed.

Me too — every phone call made or e-mail sent to Rep. Weiner has been read and answered.

Absoloutely nothing. Pressed the wrong button.

I do agree he does answer with all of his standard letters regarding all issues. He must have a stack of them.

So does every member of Congress, They get lots of mail, after all they are the stewards for over 300 million people.

  • JackieRN

Weiner doesn't have 300 million constituents. He doesn't give a crap about what you or I think about an issue. He votes the way he wants or should I say the way Schumer tells him to vote.

Or maybe he votes the way that a responsible individual should vote.

  • PartyLine

Hey I hate to state the obvious but dems realize this guy is up for reelection in November, we are about 90 days away, and this guy puts on a Howard Dean performance, I really hope the dems on here are just going with the party line and really aren't fooled. He could have passed the vote with a simple majority……

And allowed all sorts of crap to go into it? The Republican ensured failure. The procedural flaws were inserted by them.

One thing we need to do is stop the practice of attaching unrelated items to legislation.

  • JackieRN

Lisanne, is it responsible to vote for a bill with no safeguards. No medical documentation needed. Why don't you read the damn bill.
Weiner is not responsible. He has a political agenda.

I have to agree with you. We all want the very best for those who worked hard and for those who put their lives on the line as the first responders but allocating 7.4 billion dollars is alot of money when there is apparently no oversight involved.

Unfortunately, that's how legislation in passed in Washington. I would really like to know what “sort of crap” the Republicans wanted in the bill that the Democrats were so wary of. Elections are coming up. Maybe some Democrats didn't want to be seen as voting for a bill that included contentious issues that would harm their ability to get reelected.
