From the Daily News:

Opponents battling a proposed Sheepshead Bay mosque have transformed into a fund-raising machine, getting online donations and holding events in glitzy restaurants.

Newly formed neighborhood group Bay People has led the ramped-up fight against the Voorhies Ave. mosque, claiming to have raked in $30,000 from hundreds of local donors.

“When we started this in January, I thought no one would help, but the whole community has come together,” said spokesman Alex Tenenbaum before a wine and hors d’oeuvres fund-raiser last week at Paradise Garden on Emmons Ave.

Their effort has included a mailing to local residents and building a Web site to accept contributions.

The donations will fund a legal strategy to block the mosque by arguing it violates zoning laws and will create noise and traffic problems on the quiet block.

Opponents unleashed a controversy in January when they voiced anti-Islamic rants at a civic meeting and distributed flyers and letters linking Muslims with terrorists.

Tenenbaum and other Bay People officials have tried to tamp down the racial and religious rhetoric; notices for an anti-mosque demonstration on Sunday urge attendees to “be polite and tolerant.”

“We’re not welcoming bigots and Islamophobes,” said Tenenbaum, whose E. 28th St. backyard borders the mosque’s property.

But their ranks include members prone to outbursts that could inflame tensions.

“They [Muslims] want to destroy everything,” said Paradise Garden owner Gregory, who declined to give his full name. “They’re enemies of the United States – all of them. They hate America.”

Down with these meddlers! How dare you interfere with other people's right to practice their religion. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Anyone remember Nazi Germany? Krystalnacht? What's next. Burning crosses on people's lawns?

Do any of you remember being persecuted or heard stories of your parents being persecuted for their religion or political beliefs in the countries they came from? Let us all not forget where we came from.

Muslim is a growing religion that needs more places to worship. The next Mosque is around the corner. I have seen some synagogues become Mosque. Like West 8th Street Between Bay Parkway and Ave o. Unless Someone will offer to buy out the land, they have the legal right to build it. Instead of spending $30K on legal fees, they should spend it to LOBBY politicians.

It is a waste to raise and invest money for something that will never, will not, stop a right from being given to a group of people…

Good for the lawyers for the people who will just collect and run….

The community is being Used by some people who are in need for some money and then say good bay,,

the Mosque Is a done deal and it is too late to stop any thing…

Stopping could be happening before the Civil war not any more,,
    lol

NYC does not want to let Walmart build a store here. Is it not your constitutional right and Walmart constitutional right to open a store with free competition and no monopoly? Why is Walmart not allowed in Brooklyn because of politicians?
On Manhattan Beach, a Synagogue was not allowed on Mackenzie Street. The community Board 15 wrote a letter against it claiming traffic from the nursing home and the block didnt want it.

  • Muslim world

Mackenzie Street on Manhattan Beach was not allowed to build a synagogue. CB 15 wrote a letter against it

  • Abu Aymen

    Great answer Dear Lisanne

  • 177 MacKenzie Street.

177 MacKenzie Street.on manhattan beach WAS NOT ALLOWED to build a synagogue. All the neighbors signed a petition against it and community board 15 agreed to go against it. If the neighbors of the Mosque area get organized, they may get the same.

Well I think we have to understand the following why it was demolished,,,

not what you said,, not true my friend

First of all it was a house , one family, and mixed used and then was filed to be extended,,, Unlike the Mosque that is pure community facility… check the link from the Department of Buildings System..

    http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/JB2ScheduleAS

It was built out of wood frame as per pictures by Sheepshead Bay Bites last year..
    http://www.sheepsheadbites.com/2010/03/house-co
Unlike the Mosque that ill be Built of NON-Combustible materials,,, concrete and steel…

this house was demolished by the authority for its unsafe conditions,,,

SO do not go around with this fake news and try to effect the people of Sheepshead Bay…

you cannot compare a vacant lot that will be built according to the codes and zoning without any even trying to have a variance or something beyond the city regulations —— with an unsafe building that was illegally extended beyond its property, as per Sheepshead Bites..

No one will believe such misleading news,, go and see something else to cover up the story,,
    lol

Oh absolutely Abu. The lawyers will take these fools to the cleaners and leave them with dirty soap suds in their mouths. I fail to even understand how some people can be so blind and so ignorant of the past. We all just celebrated the United States independence from a tyrannical power. Now these people wish to play at tyrant. It amazes me how some do not learn their history. When Muslims or any other immigrants come to this country, those who desire may learn American History in order to qualify for citizenship.

Maybe these people need to take the same test before we allow them to be citizens.

do not waste your time, your relationships, and your MONEY to be along with the Opposition.

    Thanks Brooklyn Officials.

Abu Aymen Mohamed Mustafa ahmud is Correct. Any religion has the right to build a house of worship. It would be nice to see a Mosque, synagogue and Church on the same block. If people have the money to build it, go and do it. To bad the money come from terror funds. But, its ok. Gas stations and many cash business are run by Muslims who don't pay sales tax and claim that they make no money on taxes. Cash is king. Can you please build a mosque on Ocean Parkway and around Ocean ave and around Emmons ave. Lets build Mosques like Subway Franchise, dunken donuts and etc. Once location on every corner

  • SheepShead Muslim Bay

Am very confused. What will the lawyers argue. Maybe take the 30K and build a Synagogue on the same block. What is illegal here? maybe hire a detective to find anything about the money trail for the project. Bay Ridge is Muslim and now sheepshead bay will be Muslim Bay

  • Muslim is the New black

People should call 311 complaining to the BUILDING department ever chance they get. Call for unsafe working conditions, falling fence or ANYTHING that they see that affects Safety of the place. have 311 or 212 New York or redial and complain on 2812 voorhies ave. cracked side walk is a DOT issue. But, many building problems are part of Building Department… Good luck. Let the Mosque be the HARDEST project in history. Smoking on job site is also a violation. I love Muslims.

  • Sleeping in !!!

Although it was extremely disturbing to see the blatant racism against Muslim people. I do have to agree that the block and neighborhood is not suitable for a Mosque with all of the extra traffic and congestion brought on already by PS 52.

To add to this, I have to note the irony of seeing so many Russian people screaming at Muslim people that they do not belong in “their” neighborhood. When it was only a decade ago that many Italian and Irish people felt the same way about them.

This is Brooklyn people. It is a melting pot that has boiled over several times already….be tolerant or move. But regardless of whether a mosque, church or synogauge is built in that vacant lot it would be too much action for the people who share the neighborhood already.

Plus who wants to be woken up every morning at 5:45am with a call to prayer, at least the church waits till 12pm to ring their bells. Any way we can put a snooze button on the mosque????

  • SHB resident

This is from yesterday's Washington Times (even MAS admits that the Mosque could be a nuisance!):

“The Staten Island issue and the Brooklyn issue are kind of bifold,” said Lana Safah, a spokeswoman for the Muslim American Society. “On the one side, you have a community that is concerned with logistical issues such as traffic and noise, and those are concerns we absolutely acknowledge. On the other hand, there is a lot of outside influences. There are things that are planting seeds of doubt.”
