UPDATE: John Legend, Aretha Franklin To Play Asser Levy Park Seaside Summer Concert Series 2010

Ever since I put up the “Asser-Levy Seaside Summer Concert Series 2010: Schedule Sneak-Peak” post in mid-May, readers have quietly put together more acts to the two we were able to announce. When I ran into Borough President Marty Markowitz himself at the Brooklyn Blogfest, I threw some of the names out to him for confirmation. But he just shot back a coy smile and told me he couldn’t confirm any acts for the 2010 Seaside Summer Concert Series. Contractual obligations force him to keep mum until the performers themselves announce it, as the acts fear the free event will shave off from other paid events nearby.

Well, a number of readers scoured websites and put together this list from published tour dates. Again, these are not yet confirmed by the borough president’s office, and it’s far from a complete list. But it’s more information than you’ll find anywhere else!

Schedule

  • July 15 Brenda Lee, and Neil Sedaka
Brenda Lee is a rockabilly, pop and country music performer most well-known for her songs “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” and “I’m Sorry.” It’s Lee’s first time at the event. Neil Sedaka is the returning act, after playing the event several times. The Brighton Beach native and Lincoln High School alum is best known for hits like “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” and “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen.”
  • July 22 The Happy Together Tour, and The Beach Boys (Mike Love/Bruce Johnston)
Mike Love has licensed the Beach Boys’ name for his tour, which also features fellow Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Their backing performers (aka the “Beach Boys Band”) include Randell Kirsch, John Cowsill, Tim Bonhomme, Christian Love, and Scott Totten. The Happy Together Tour showcases The Turtles (featuring Flo & Eddie), Mickey Dolenz (of The Monkees), The Grassroots (featuring Rob Grill), Mark Lindsey of Paul Revere and the Raiders, and The Buckinghams
  • July 29 George Thorogood and The Destroyers, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes
Thorogood is a blues rock performer known for his hit song “Bad to the Bone” as well as for covers of blues standards such as Hank Williams’ “Move It On Over” and John Lee Hooker’s “House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes is considered the Grandfather of “the New Jersey Sound.” Jon Bon Jovi has acknowledged Southside as his reason for singing, and their notable songs include “I Don’t Want To Go Home” and “The Fever.”

Here’s a list of just some of the sites used to piece together this information:

I hounded Marty at Blogfest too!! A friend is pushing his offices to include freestyle as part of the schedule. He actually gave me a nod that it's going to happen and will be part of Latin Night. They're later than usual this year w/ the final schedule. Wish they'd churn it out already…. Thanks for the sneak peaks.

I hope he has less chairs and a smaller fenced off area (for the pay seats and his politico friends ) and more room for the “FREE Concert”. Or will he fence off more of the park as he seems to do each year?

90 percent sure Thorogood is the headliner, and Southside is the opener. We don't have confirmation of that though.

think TKA, George Lamond, Coro, and Cynthia.

  • Diana Ramos

please bring victor manuelle back for latin night. he gives a great show, he's an awesome latin performer

It's a possibility, depending on what night they choose for Latin Night. If it's August 5, 19 or 26, he'll be in the Northeast playing shows, including one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. But the 26th is the last night, I believe, and I don't think they've ever made Latin Night the last night. Brian Hedden thinks the B-52s and Carlisle are playing on the 19th, based on their other schedule dates. So that would leave August 5, which is a little earlier than they usually do it. But it's still possible!
