• Damage didn’t appear to be too bad to the exterior of the Winsor McCay “Hell House” (1811 Voorhies Avenue), and the structure seems salvageable. The second floor windows were boarded up along the front. On the side, only one window – the forward-most one – was boarded. All others were intact, suggesting that the worst of the fire may have been contained to the front of the house.

Below is a gallery of photos. The ones of the damage were taken by Sheepshead Bites. The ones of the fire were taken by Eugene D., a reader who happened to be going by during the fire. He sent them this morning.

The door has been outside of the house for a few weeks.

There was am armchair on the side of the house that was damaged by the fire, but not completely.

My guess would be a space heater.

I'm a little shocked that the place is still deemed safe to live (even prior to the fire). I have a feeling that if it didn't have the columns in the front ( which give it the charecter everyone seems to be drawn to) the place would have been torn down years ago.

The house to its left (it's sibling, also built around 1880) doesn't ave columns.

The damage doesn't look too bad, at least from the outside. I had a similar scale fire in my home 5 years ago, thank fully my Homeowners Insurance covered all the damage so we did eventually recover. My sympathies go to the family.

Wheew! Great thing, the McCay house was not totally burned. But we can still see damages from the outside. We just don’t know yet how the inside of this house has been damaged. The lesson here is that, we must be more careful these days, because we can’t hold the future. And prevention is better, so we may be able to keep our houses safe from burning. We can also replace stuff that are prone to fire, like wooden doors. You can use steel entry doors instead. If you ordinary walls, you can have fire-proof walls instead.
