• Grillin On The Bay - March 27, 2010

As we all know by now, damage was widespread. For the most part, downed trees took out power lines, blocked off roads, crushed cars and shattered concrete like egg shells. In some areas trees fell into houses. Aluminum siding and roofing was stripped from some homes, as were signs from businesses. Boats slammed into the Ocean Avenue footbridge, splintering wooden guardrails.

In the worst damage I’ve seen from the storm yet, a stalled construction on MacKenzie Street in Manhattan Beach collapsed onto a neighbor’s home, knocking it off its foundation and causing the family to lose nearly everything (more on that later).

Ironically, Plumb Beach didn’t seem too badly damaged (more on that later, too).

These 111 photos come from Sheepshead Bites’ great readers, who went about chronicling the damage and sent us their photos. It’s only a selection of what we received. It was a shame seeing so many trees down. The downed trees along Marine Park on Stuart St was unforgettable and very sad. Outside of the park I did not see much damage in Marine Park or neighboring Flatlands. Nearby Canarsie however was a different story nearly every block had houses missing roof shingles and siding and a lot of huge trees that fell on houses.
  • There was serious damage in Gerritsen Beach. Roofs even came off.
  • Everybody's stuff was used. There was so much damage that these photos just are a small sample of what happened.
  • Can you hear that? It's all the insurance companies crying and plotting to deny claims.

I was really bummed to see that poor dead bird :(
  • The skin of an armadillo also washed up into the Holocaust Memorial Park. I saw a number of dead animals around, actually, but the armadillo was most shocking. Still, I was tempted to bring it home and pin it up on the wall. And start wearing a pith helmet.

Wait, what? How in the world was an armadillo in NY?
And Ned- you seriously are sick lol
  • Well, I asked myself the same question. Apparently, because of rising temperatures in North America, armadillos are migrating higher up in the continent. Still, my best guess is this thing died in Florida and got swept up here. It really wasnt much of an armadillo - just his shell, cleanly pecked and sun bleached. It still had claws though. Very cute.

    no! Not cute!
  • A live one wouldn't be very cute either. Except, of course, to another armadillo.
