A “50 percent off” sale of North Face products caused a mob scene yesterday at Downtown, a clothing retailer on Avenue U and Bedford Avenue. We’re not really sure what the big deal was, but for most of yesterday afternoon and into the evening lines formed down the block. The store was only letting small groups in at a time. According to an employee, the sale will continue until stock is sold out. From the looks of it, it won’t last long.

We couldn’t help noticing that 99 percent of those waiting were Asian. None were able to answer our questions in English, so we couldn’t glean what was so special about this sale that it brought such a large number – and such a homogeneous group – to the location.

So, does anyone know what’s going on here? Why are there so many Asians trying to buy North Face from this location? And before you answer that question, please realize that I’m looking for a real answer, and not race baiting. Stereotypes and idiotic attempts at humor will be deleted more liberally than on other posts.

last time i went there was about 5-6 years ago i wanted to get a ski jacket and it was very expensive and didnt buy anything. a decent jacket could cost a few hundred easy and the season is over so they need to sell. the store is on the corner of bedford.

Whoops! I knew that – just wasn't thinking when I put it down. The location has been corrected. Thanks!

A $300 dollar jacket for $150 is a steal. Asians like steals (as do I ) There are many in that neighborhood, I used to live there and the Ave U train station was hell on earth.

Asians only speak English when they need to. Under these circumstances it was not in their benefit to explain what was going on. Should there have been a need for them to find out from you what was happening then their English would have been perfect! P.S. General Tso Chicken rocks!

General Tso's Chicken is also one of the many NYC-originated foods (Shun Lee Palace on W. 55th St.)

Totally! I would like to add though, watching an asian woman drive in the rain is the most amusing/dangerous thing to do! Stand clear of sidewalks!

I've seen this sort of scene there a few times over the years. The question is, how do they get the word out on these sales? Do they only advertise in specialized publications that most of us don't read?

Shhh, that's supposed to be a secret.

They have a sidewalk sale fairly regularly. I remember them when my teen was a baby, and I think even before that…big, huge, massive markdowns once a year or so.

I had a friend who lived across the street in the apartment house on the corner and we would marvel at the lines of people when they had one of those sales.

A North Face jacket is extremely warm, but also very pricy. One thin windbreaker will cost you about $180, and Downtown will probably mark it down to $80-90. It's not a surprise that people are crowding over the store. And as for the Asian question, this store is near Avenue U, pretty much a place my friends and I call “Asian Avenue.” Plus, who doesn't love bargains? I'm pretty sure Asians aren't the only one lining up.

Its a 50% off on all of thier winter gear and the north face is a good quality brand for winter jackets and etc, this sale only happens only once every year and it's first come first serve, who wouldn't line up for this. And for the asian part, avenue u is made up of mostly asians and this is the only spot on avenue u with name brand clothes. Obviously if you can buy a jacket thats worth 300 bucks for only 150, you would. Asians are smart with thier money, wear the old jacket in the winter and then buy a new jacket in the spring for cheap and then rock that new jacket next winter.
