We just received these photos of a small sailboat slamming into the Ocean Avenue footbridge, near the Manhattan Beach side. We’re not sure yet what happened or if there’s any damage. But from the looks of it, the boat somehow became unanchored and drifted with the storm’s choppy waves, eventually hitting the bridge. Please leave any info you have in the comments. We’ll update you as we find out more. (Photos and tips courtesy of nolastname)

UPDATE (6:55 p.m.): I’ve been out of the ‘hood all day, and now I’m getting reports that the wind and rain are incredibly bad and doing a lot of damage. Reportedly, the marina is overflowing and water is splashing onto the sidewalks and the bridge. Gusts are also taking down signs in the area.

Perhaps most importantly, the wind has taken out power, phone, and cable lines in a few spots. Please be careful and stay inside! It goes without saying, but downed power lines can be very dangerous.

Please take photos/video of damage and send it over to us. More importantly, be safe!

We were driving in the brighton beach area down one of the side streets and we had to back out because of a downed power line. Interesting thing was some very brave soul had tied a red plastic bag to the middle of the line making it more visible.

There are presently 4 sailboats that broke loose from their moorings. 2 are up against the foot bridge, and 2 are up against the Manhattan beach bulkhead. One of the boats against the bulkhead has already sunk and the other is taking a beating.
  • You missed two. I don't know if they're sailboats exactly, since it was dark and they were badly damaged, but there are two more that have been torn up and are now floating against the bulkhead near the Holocaust Memorial Park. There is also a ton of debris - wood, paneling, foam and general boating miscellanea - gathered in that spot. The swans appear concerned.
  • Both the Brighton (B,Q) and the Culver (F) lines are out in Southern Brooklyn.

  • I was told there were a number of downed trees on the Brighton tracks.

what would happen if a real hurricane hits us.
  • I've been here during hurricanes. And I have seldom seen as much damage as I have today.
  • It's like Posiedon himself is unleashing his fury at the city. Jeez. My window has NEVER shaken like this, ever.

Shit, someone should get over to Plumb Beach and check how bad the damage/erosion is there. The Belt could be in real danger.
  • I'm going to go out early and take photos. After all the craziness I doubt I am going to sleep well.
  • Be careful.

    Some things I saw today;
Power line down on E17 & Z putting on a fireworks display.
A huge backyard gym set came flying down Ave Z and got wedged btwn and parking meter and a fence.
My next door neighbor lost siding, 2 trees and a section of fence.
I lost a section of fence, and 2 panels from my screened in porch.
All this in a 1 square block area.
God knows what else we'll find in the morning.

Looks like the tall Sign at the Golden Gate came crashing down as well by the Belt.

If you pray,do. If you don't do anyway.
  • Yes, that's exactly how I feel about this.
  • This has got to be one of the worst wind storms in years. There's lots of damage, storm drains breaking, I saw a power line that looked broken, things are flying everywhere. I'm constantly hearing police sirens. Looks like serious stuff is happening here.

I worked on the charter party boats for about 17 years and I have seen that happen so many times in bad weather....I hope there is no damage to the boat.....and from what i can see the weather is pretty bad there to have such a chop in the bay as that is sheltered water and it looks like high tide....Good luck to the owner
