• Well, wouldn’t you know it, but yet another real estate office has closed. We’re not sure how long ago it happened, since such things kind of pass beneath our notice at this point, but the real estate office at 4175 Bedford Avenue has been replaced with something new.

I passed by earlier today and the new sign was up: Sheepshead Bay is getting a new bike shop! As the sign says RideBikeProGear is opening a bicycle show room and test center. As it turns out, RBPG looks like a well-established internet-based business, glancing at the page it looks like it’s been around a long time. The shop is not open yet so we don’t know just how much local service it’s going to provide, but let’s hope it’s a full-fledged bike shop. The area could use more unique businesses, even if they are just an outlet for a website.

On a slightly related topic, one does wonder what brings such a business to Bedford Avenue. While Bedford is one of the longest bicycle paths in the city it’s not exactly the safest or most scenic. Maybe the owner is from Sheepshead Bay, or perhaps this is the start of a new trend, where web businesses and dot-coms open offices in more affordable commercial areas outside Manhattan. Either way, RideBikeProGear is more than welcome here. If we can have a scuba shop, why not a bike shop!

We do have a Bike Shop. But it's only one bike shop called Sheepshead Cycles on Coney Island Avenue. I used to go there years ago but found them getting more expensive and less helpful. The name of this place isn't very imaginative and the “Showroom” is more like a shoebox from the look of it. Let's hope they provide some competition. Could that even be allowed in this neighborhood??

Definitely welcome the new bike shop! I have fond memories of King County Divers on Avenue U btw, that's a great Scuba shop, and their classes for certification are terrific. Great team of people there.

That place is a total rip-off, compare their air-fill at $15 per tank to $8.25 by their competitors on Gerritsen Ave, and they make you buy the equipment from them at exorbitant prices, should you decide to get certified there. That said – I welcome this bike shop with arms wide open.

Never was helpful, but has been the only act in town for years.

I believe that once there was a bike store on Sheepshead Bay Road and Voorhies Avenue. Can't remember the name. Closed a long time ago.

This is not the neighborhood where you can sell expensive bikes. For low-end bikes the competition is stiff as well. They will not survive. There was a bike shop a few years ago around McDonalds and Ave P that lasted for maybe 6 month. I am sure they faced similar issues.

Toys R Us, bikes for under 100 bucks.
Roy’s is expensive, but if you want high end he’s got it. He could use some competition.
I wish the place on Bedford and Ave, U would sell bikes, they seem really nice.
The place of my childhood was on Sheepshead Bay Road. They were some wonderful people.

Anyone out there remember Mark's Bicycle Shop on Coyle and U?

I think this is great. The bike path gets a lot of use from serious riders from all over the city, so I don't think they need to gear their merchandise to the immediate neighborhood.

Let's put it this way, they're gearing their merchandise to the serious rider, not the round the block types.

      Good luck to them!

It looks like this store will be a bike gear & clothing store, not a bicycle shop.

I happen to be a serious cyclist and I deal with Sheepshead Cycles (Roy's). They were originally in the Bay. They have everything from beginners bikes to $12,000 racing bikes. My opinion is that they are well stocked with bikes and advice.

Off the top of my head, I know bike stores that went out of business. There was one on Ave P and McDonalds area and one on Bay Pkway and Bath Ave area. The shops that most people are describing here likely have a low overhead (have owned the building for years) and minimum payroll expenditure.

Given lets say a very conservative rent of $2,500 a month and lets say $2,200 a month on one employee, it would be very difficult for any bike shop in this area to stay in business.

I remember Roy's being on Coney Island Avenue since about 1968. Maybe they merged with Sheepshead cycle at a later timne.

Then there was P&H on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue O.

Oh yes. I went in there once, it was small and if I recall correctly, I couldn't get any help putting on a tube.
