Residents, get ready for another Belt Parkway boondoggle!

During Manhattan Beach Community Group’s January 27 meeting, Community Board 15 Chairperson Theresa Scavo explained the three projects occurring simultaneously in our area. We’ve already written about these projects, and nothing has changed, but it’s worth watching the video to see Scavo’s frustration with the plans as well MBCG member’s shocked reactions. The projects (and links to our coverage) are:

The projects, some of which have already started, will cause tremendous delays over the next couple of years. The last project – replacement of the East 8th Street bridge – is slated to start any day and will see 15-minute closures of the Belt Parkway. In the video, you’ll see Scavo explaining the breaks and point out that they could go on for a year and a half – “and that’s if the weather is good and everything, give it some time and I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it longer,” she said over the crowd’s grumbling. She also said in the video that with the three projects at the same time “nothing’s gonna move, but they [DOT officials] don’t want to hear this.”

On a side note, if you find this sort of video clip useful or interesting, let me know in the comments section and we’ll be sure to do it more in the future.

And how are we to react to this news? Be outraged that infrastructure repairs will take longer, cost more and disrupt our lives more than we think tolerable? Be outraged that our infrastructure was so neglected that we are now so inconvenienced? Be outraged that any DOT projects are seemingly by definition, incompetent? Should we accept inconvenience for the benefit of future generations? How much inconvenience do we individually accept for the greater good?

I think everyone's negative reaction is due to the fact that the DOT has scheduled all three massive projects at the same time. I'd say that's a legitimate gripe.

I like Theresa's attitude. She has spunk aside from being up to date on activities.

We have massive unemployment. We have massive infrastructure needs. We have massive needs to address our energy future. I think massive could describe most of the countries problems. Certainly there is massive dissatisfaction. We may not have the luxury of timid responses unless we are willing to maintain the status quo both as individuals and as a country.

    Whatever.
