Kings Plaza 6, the movie theaters at Brooklyn’s most fabulo… I can’t say it. I just can’t. Kings Plaza is a hell hole, and the theaters there were terrible. I just got word that the theaters closed two weeks ago, via the blog Brooklynometry. Good riddance, I say.
According to the blogger, Kings Plaza’s wise and venerable security guards say the space is being filled by Best Buy. So for the first time since all of its book stores shuttered years ago, I finally have a reason to go to Kings Plaza. Or I can go to Caesar’s Bay. Or Gateway Center. Or walk three blocks in any direction in Manhattan.
A resident of the area tells us there have been rumors that a movie theater is being placed above the Lowe’s Hardware being built next door. As far as we know, though, that building hasn’t gotten past a single wall in almost six months. Take the rumor for what it’s worth.
UPDATE: As one of our readers pointed out, there will not be a theater above the Lowe’s. Original plans by the developer included a deal for a 14-screen multiplex that would take up part of the first and all of the second floor. However, the plans fell through almost a decade ago, culminating in a bitter NY Supreme Court battle that was ruled on just yesterday. Tipster=1. Know-nothing Mill Basin resident=0.

Or both rumors. It is possible that the theater space will remain vacant for some time.
I think it's more likely that Best Buy would be seeking stand alone space on Flatbush itself. Kings Plaza seems jinxed. Then again, shopping malls have been closing everywhere for at least 20 years.
The first CVS in Brooklyn was in Kings Plaza. And the list of once popular stores which closed there are legion.

Oh well, so long. You won't be missed. HAHAHAHAH
that mall is crap. i haven't stepped foot in there for 10 years. i usually drive to roosevelt or palisades.
I worked there in the early 80's and have some fond memories; however, when the North and South theaters were split into smaller theaters, the movie-going experience was never the same. My favorite memory there was watching Jaws the first day it opened.
Great picture. Standing at the crossroads like a big giant middle finger from the 1970s to the present.
Kings Plaza was fun when it first opened. Had some rather interesting and unique stores. Walden had discounted books, Sam Goody had discounted records ( they acquired tons of Vanguard Records mono recordings, and eventually were selling them at 2 for 44¢, I bought dozens) and then there was Spencers, which had the most interesting novelty items) There was a cheese store, all sorts of interesting eateries, and it was a cool Friday night hangout when I was a teenager. It chnaged over the years and became less interesting. And then the core stores started closing up.
I was there on opening day. Bought my Cub Scout uniform at Alexanders. At that time it had the biggest indoor parking lot in the world. We had to park on the roof in a foot of water.
Ha Ha
I remember the water fountains outside on Flatbush Ave and the ice cream kiosks in front of the Alexanders' entrances. There was a restaurant ( I can't remember the name) at the Flatbush ave entrance that became Chi-Chi's. I think it's a clothing store now. Shopping on the Island is more pleasant and I love the different shops but you pay tax on clothing out there. Parking at KP is now $3.
My 5-year old like Kings Plaza mall, especially the 5 continents candy store there. She doesn't know any better. Good thing I like ogling chocolate more than eating it! If the weather had been better we'd have gone to the playground by the Salt Marsh, the one with the big snake in it.
I say knock the whole building down and bring on nyc's 1st WALMART. BROOKLYN!
The earliest time I remember going to Kings Plaza was as a child in the late 90's and I wish I could remember all the stores that were there then. It seems that whenever the mall changes I can't remember what it was like before. I'd love to be reminded of what Kings Plaza used to be like because I remember that I actually enjoyed going there. Maybe you can help me out by writing what stores Kings Plaza used to house or letting me know where I can find that information.
Thanks
Was there today – that's how I found out the theaters had closed. Kings Plaza is boring, nothing there but clothing shops now, not even a single book shop, NOTHING, just clothes clothes clothes, and of course a dirty McDonalds outlet, right next to the worst Radio Shack I've been to in my life. There were 8 staff working, I was the only customer, and you think I could get any help? Stood at the counter 'island' waiting while they conversed and joked with each other right in front of me for several minutes. I said “excuse me” several times and finally one person started to serve but then changed their mind, and without ever saying one word to me, turned to another employee and said “you do it” and walked off. The other employee just ignored me. All I wanted was to buy some batteries. I just walked out. They did not care, the employees were more concerned with acting like gangsta trash, just like 99.9% of the people who go to that peasant mall. With the movie theaters gone, there is no reason for me to ever go to that stinking cesspit ever again. That place is history and the sooner it gets knocked down the better. Maybe something useful can be put there, like a school.
The movie theater sucked ass anyway. Every time I went, there was some asshole gangsta peasant piece of shit talking on his cellphone during the movie, or some fat bitch with half a dozen welfare-enabling snot-nosed kids that screamed all the way through the movie, and on one occasion I saw some trash drop their young kids in one movie theater while they went to watch a movie in another theater. Staff didn't care. I could piss on the screen and drop a shit in the aisle and they wouldn't care. The entire mall is a stinking hole full of wanna-be gangsta hoodlums with nothing to do but look for trouble.

Good Riddance. This place was horrible, absolutely horrible.
Spencer's Gifts, the cheese store, ( I think it was World Of Cheese), Sbarro's (still there last time I checked)
It's been a long time.
5 Continents is still there! Wow!
Just to get back to Kings Plaza. I need to vent since I just got back from there. I get there and the first thing I see is that they raised the parking fee to $3. It's the only mall I know that charges for parking and they have the b___s to raise the fee? Then I get into the lot and all the lights are out. A muggers paradise. We go to Macy's to return an item and find that the escalators in Macys have been shut off. So to sum up: I paid my $3, walked in the dark, returned a $30 item that is now $27 due to the parking fee and walked down 4 flights of metal escalator steps. We're so lucky to have Kings Plaza!
that sucks. you forgot to subtract gas and time from the 30
No Walmart! Don't insult me! You want to ruin all the small businesses around Brooklyn for a bunch of welfare jobs? That thing could stay in LI where it belongs! You want a Walmart? Drive out to Valley Stream like they do!
The mall became ghetto when that whitebread waste of space Sears opened up after Alexander's closed down. Alexander's was the crowning jewel of my childhood. I was only a toddler but I knew that layout like the back of my hand. And I also remember the Merry-Go-Round and the bakery that sold the best napoleons ever. The movie theater had become the place in high school where we would go when we cut school and ducking from truancy. But I remember when it the tone of it shifted as well showing movies they probably believed that blacks would go to see. After I realized this, I go to Court Street UA.
I only go there now to pay some store credit card bills and my cell phone bill. And what's the point of having a Best Buy there? I would go there to pay my credit card bill but they don't do that.
I also believe that the merchandise sold at KP are the ones that couldn't sell at the other stores. I remember being at Macy's and seeing a Burlington Coat Factory crate piled high with clothing coming into the back area.
And the paying for parking sucks. That's why people do the trick of parking at the furniture store across the street, make like your looking around and tell the salesman that you have pick someone up across the street.
I am telling you, when Alexander's closed it was the beginning of the end… Since its closing no business really lasts for too long at KP. If it wasn't for Forever 21, Bakers, Charlotte Rouse, Macy's and H&M, the mall would've tanked long ago. And the renovation didn't help matters much…
Oh… Am I the only one that realizes the KP doesn't have a food court? I spent an hour in the mall because I couldn't remember where the Cinnabon was lol
Why not use the movie theater space as a food court?
You can always put a stamp on it.
i saw this structure in a movie just cant remember which…
