Kings Plaza Diner To Close?

A Courier-Life report says that the Kings Plaza Diner at 4125 Avenue U may close and be replaced by a Bed, Bath & Beyond. The article, laden with enough praise for the diner that one must wonder if it’s an advertiser, says that Community Board 18 District Manager Dottie Turano mentioned at a recent meeting that she had heard “from sources” about the closing. Turano also detailed plans to move into the former Retro 50s diner on Cropsey Avenue in Coney Island, the Nebraskan Diner, which has been closed for two years.

Owners so far are denying the rumors, but Courier-Life offered up this nugget:

The only evidence of any proposed change comes by way of city Department of Finance records, which showed a deed change at the Kings Plaza Diner back in February 2009 to Sigma Preferred Equities, which couldn’t be reached as this paper went to press. There has been no deed change for the Retro 50s diner since 1998. Residents, however, have noted that construction materials have been left at the site — possible evidence of an upcoming transformation.

If they did make the move, would this make the Kings Plaza Diner more accessible for Sheepshead Bay residents?

This rumor “from sources” is as old as dirt. Did anyone call KPD? El Greico was rumored, the flordian was rumored, perrys was rumored. They all have big properties.

I hope this is a false rumor. It is the only diner I ever go to.
I've never been disappointed with their food or service.
I wish I could say the same for El Greco..and yet they live on.

We used to go to KPD all the time but stopped when the price for breakfast grew to almost $10. The portion size was obnoxiously large and we were sending plates back with half eaten potatoes. What a waste. Now we go to Fivos (formerly Oasis). It's small and friendly and the prices are more reasonable.

    Unreal .
    KPD is ALWAYS packed.
If this diner isn/t making big profits no diner is .

The demise of the KPD is a fact. My brother works in the kitchen and has been told to find a new job effective 6/10/09. Apparently they sold the property for a bundle of cash which allows them to buy several other diners. Too bad, the food was very good.

Besides the cash, one of the owners is seriously ill and wants the funds to pay medical bills.

Sorry, in my reply, I stated the closing date was 6/30/09. This is obviously and error. It is 6/10/10.

The prices at KPD are outrageous. They won't last on Cropsey Ave with those prices. It would be nice to have a diner at that spot again – a good place for Coney Island/Sea Gate/Bath Beach residents to get something to eat that's not fast food.
