starbucks inside stalled construction december 2009

Construction inside the planned Starbucks location has been stalled for months

Bad news for those salivating in anticipation of the new drive-through Starbucks on Nostrand Avenue: their planned opening date has been pushed back by several months.

We reported back in July that the 3454 Nostrand Avenue (corner of Gravesend Neck Road) location would open this month. Unfortunately, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials have slammed the brakes on the project over concerns of the location of the drive-through curb cut, according to Howard Weiss, an attorney for the property owner.

Weiss said that after the Board of Standards and Appeals granted a variance giving permission to construct a drive-through in May, construction kicked off and all seemed good. But he said the MTA renovated the B36 and B44 bus shelter there, moving it closer to the corner several feet.

The curb cut is just mere inches from the bus shelter, raising concerns from MTA officials

The result meant the bus shelter was just mere inches from where cars would exit the drive-through. Since it’s also the first stop for the B36, buses will idle in the stop, and the MTA is concerned about the traffic snafu a drive through would cause.

With the MTA  holding up the project, construction of the interior promptly halted. Graffiti and stickers now adorn that section of the building, and garbage litters the parking lot. To combat vandalism, the property owner has erected a fence to keep out intruders.

All is not lost, though. Weiss said the property owner is working with city officials to get the bus shelter moved. The property owner, 3454 Star Nostrand LLC, will spare taxpayers the burden of moving the stop, and has offered to pay the total cost of relocating it.

Weiss added that he hopes to have everything in order within the next few weeks. If all goes smoothly, Sheepshead Bay’s residents can sip Starbucks’ lattes in about two months.

Not new. The MTA can’t be satisfied holding up its own construction projects due to shoddy management and planning it has to hold up others. Not that I care about a drive through Ratbucks but it’s the principal of it.

Wait a fracking second. The MTA is ok screwing one business over this but not another?

How about the fact that the only entrance curb cut for the Vally Stream Bank on Ave U is right where B3′s and B36′s stop and idle for either driver changes or bathroom breaks or what not. Sometimes the entire block has 3 buses along the curb. It’s not so big a deal for Brennan and Carr because their parking lot has 2 curb cuts (one on U one on Neck) and you can enter/exit from either one, however the Vally Stream Bank only has one cut labeled for entering and thats right where the busses idle. The other cuts are all marked EXIT ONLY and dump customers on East 29th and NOT Neck Road.

What the fuck is up with that?!

Exactly what I was thinking when i saw where this drive thru was supposed to be! Thanks for the article.

I think the MTA is totally in the right here.. it would have been a disaster. I wish the designers would take the flow of public transportation into account when building these things. Then you wouldnt get problems like the one arthur mentioned above.

Even with the bus stop moved I still think it will be a disaster to have cars exiting over there. There’s a lot of traffic and pedestrians around that intersection.. and neither are very careful. Just picturing cars darting out into traffic doesnt make me feel very hopeful.

Not that I wouldnt want a starbucks.. because i’m one of those fools that actually really like starbucks. Hows about eliminating the drive thru all together and just making a larger store. Or just buy the defunct laundromat/dry cleaners that has been sitting empty next to perry’s for years and open over there. Lots of good parking to be had there.

I’m totally unimpressed by Starbucks, and always have been. Additionally, I am disappointed that the Chocks Full O’ Nuits revival hasn’t caught on. But even there, they should have gone back to their roots with counter service to give Starbucks some serious competition.

I think the situation has changed since you published the story Ned. As early as Tuesday I started noticing a “For LEASE” sign in the window over there.

That leads me to believe Starbucks backed out.

Hey Ned is there any way you can find out about the Starbucks. I'll give you the District Managers number. The corporate number is 1-800-23-Latte. They don't like releasing information to employees.

It looks like the location is being totally used by 99cent USA. I was out there earlier and I guess I should have taken a picture.
