Fallen Branch in Sheepshead Bay

Some of you may have noticed the exceptionally windy weather we’ve had lately. With winds gusting at 45mph, many trees in the area took lots of damage, just like the following fallen branch across the street from 2260 East 19th Street. Most likely this grand branch snapped off last weekend as it’s been laying on the road since last Monday. We want to know: why is it still here? The branch represents a hazard for every pedestrian in the area. Children risk hurting themselves among the sharp and pointy twigs. The elderly risk tripping. And, worst of all, it’s taking up two parking spots right next door to an apartment building. Is this a case of apathetic residents or of a negligent city? In any case can some one please come clean this up!?

The couple who owns the house parks their car in the back. But I still would think he would care about this. I met the man once, and he seemed to be smart enough t o contact the right people to have it removed.

I think we have to give people living on the block the benefit of the doubt and assume that the city was called about it. And I would like to believe that maybe the sanitation/police people would use their power to contact the proper agency to clean up the mess.

I sit on that block every day while waiting for work, and that branch has been sitting there since Monday. I would have figured that someone, anyone, would have called 311 by now, or the police (the thing fell on someones car, how the car wasn’t damaged i don’t know), which is why I havn’t called myself.

There’s no hazard tape and aside from that creepy Verizon truck no other trucks on the block since so I’m starting to the think nobody has bothered to call the city which is weird. But if they have and the city hasn’t shown up yet….

    Sorry, just couldn’t resist.

I helped cutting some branches for my neighbor and took them out for collections. It took the parks department about 3 weeks to take them. They broke up 5 appointments that I scheduled with them and when they finally showed up, they showed up not at the scheduled time.

That sounds like what I’ve seen here on my block as well. One year they were even 2 weeks late with the leaf collecting.

I saw someone talking to the homeowner earlier and pulled up to ask about the tree, turns out he was talking to Lisanne! He told us the city was notified of the downed hazard last week, so our mystery is solved, the city is missing in action….big suprise there!

Well let’s hope that someone at the Parks Department reads this and acts quickly. They should also look at the tree this fell from in order to determine whether it needs pruning.

Your timing was perfect Arthur. If you had come by five minutes later I wouldn’t have been there.
