A reader just sent in this photo of an accident on Shore Parkway and Ocean Avenue. Though it looks minor, the cars are sitting in the middle of the intersection blocking a part of traffic. But according to the witness, police in the area are too busy to bother with it.
He says one unit of traffic police is ticketing nearby parked cars and later drove right by. Another drove by moments later without investigation, and a third is sitting on Emmons Avenue watching meters (at 9 p.m.?!).
Wow, quotas must be high this month if three units have refused to take notice, preferring instead to ticket vehicles of no immediate threat to drivers.

This is strange. Is is possible that these two drivers are trying to take care of things without getting their insurance companies involved?
Even so, don’t you think they should stop and see if everything’s ok? Maybe help direct traffic so no one gets hurt? They don’t NEED to write a police report, but they can still make sure everything goes smoothly.
This isn’t anything new….
I would have thought that the traffic cops ultimate responsibility was to keep traffic flowing safely, not write tickets.
Is it current protocol for police not to involve themselves unless specifically instructed to?
“Hey Joe, that man wants our help”.
“Now Sue, you know the rules, he has to cal 911 and then wait until the assigned officers arrive”.
I hope that’s not what is going on these days.
i’m not surprised.
all i can say is that there are times we need them and there are times we don’t.
just look at the current news. a former police commissioner is in jail…that pretty much says it all.
from what i learned so far, if property damage is less than $600 and no injury is involved, a police report is not required to be filed and thus no police officer is required to be present. however, i do agree that officers (both police and traffic) have the duty to clear traffic until it’s safe for all motorists.

this is typical of the good old 61 pct. There are definitely ticket quotas to be met and the meter monkeys and cops are out on the street in droves issuing fraudulent tickets – I received one too.
The new commander of the 61 is totally unapproachable. I called one evening to speak to him and was told by some desk jockey that “NOBODY SPEAKS TO THE COMMANDER!”. Who is he, the great and powerful Oz????
The 61 is and always has been a joke.
