Sheepshead Bites has a lot of readers, but – statistically speaking – very few commenters. Less than one in ten readers leave comments, and about one in twenty do so regularly. So, if you’re someone who has never commented: welcome. You don’t have to use your real name, but here’s your opportunity to say hello, and maybe a bit about yourself, or the bay, or Sheepshead Bites!

    hello everyone!

anybody lives near ocean ave and ave y? did you see the pile of garbage right between ocean ave and east 21st st on ave y? it’s like someone’s been dumping his/her stuff there and it doesn’t get picked up for well over 2 weeks.

The one on twenty number is statistically higher than usual. That’s a good sign, it means that people are interested enough to get involved, and holds the promise that more people will over time.

But lets talk about how people don’t get it about garbage pickup.

There’s no garbage pickup on holidays. Last Wednesday was Veterans Day. Now some people don’t remember that Veteran’s Day is a legal holiday. They leave their garbage out, and it doesn’t get picked up. So, instead of taking it off the street it is left there. It rained on Friday and Saturday. People who left bundles of exposed cardboard on the sidewalk ended up with a soggy mess. Not a pleasant sight.

Now if you take a walk west of Coney Island Avenue north of Avenue W on Thanksgiving morning guess what you’ll see? Yep! Now don’t tell me that people don’t know that Thanksgiving is a holiday, and there will be no pickup on that day. It’s really incredible, but true. The sad thing is that so many of us do this. So most of us don’t even think much about it when we see it, even though it is quite offensive to the eye.

Let’s start a unique trend here. When our collection day is a holiday we shall be the smart ones. We shall not place our garbage at the curb until the next day. We shall also find out whether we have a collection for recyclables that week. (Call 311)

A significant amount of street trash comes from garbage that has been separated from its receptacle.. The longer it sits out on the street the more likely it is that the containers and bags will be tampered with. Let’s not be inadvertent litterers. Leave your trash inside on holidays.

    Please!
