Blues Clues Day Care in Sheepshead Bay

A new Russian/English day care center in Sheepshead Bay is opening its doors today. Blue’s Clues Academy (2109 Avenue V) promises to educate children in basic reading, writing, and arithmetic; the Three R’s every growing kid needs. Blue’s Clues will also offer instruction in music, arts and crafts, and speech, and will host birthday parties. The manager, Yelena Konnov, said she and owner Michael Levitz are very excited to open today, and are offering rates of around $600 per month for each child.

  • Maybe we wasted the time of someone who is self-admittedly confused. But as I amt he one who started us down the trial of trademark violations and the legal ramifications of such I have no remorse for doing so. An implied endorsement is worth noting, it might be thought that there is a direct relationship between the day care and the production company, and thusly, this would create a perception of responsible management and stability. They might indeed be reliable individuals, but they are not partnering with the producers of the television program.

Gee, seems we always get in trouble when we write about day care centers.
  • Confused: Who told you there was information about the Blues Clues Academy on this site? My article was a short and sweet announcement that new daycare center was opening. Neither I, nor this site, brought up the trademark infringement. A commenter did. And as comments tend to do it starts a conversation.

How can you call any of this a waste? It's honest communication between members of the community. That's all it is, a conversation. It might not be the kind of conversation you came looking for but then it's up to you to start the conversation you WANT to read.

If clients of Blues Clues Academy commented about their experiences here they would be more then welcome! If you know anyone that has gone there, or if you do in the future then please come back and let us know!

I came to this site to get some information about the new acadamy. I thought I would read comments from people who have visited the place, instead I read assumptions about copyright infringement. Not to be rude, but in my oppinion, this page became a waste and I wish I hadn't spent my time reading these pointless assumptions.
  • Excepting that copyrights and trademarks have to be protected by their owners. Which may mean legal expenses. If they knew about this, and did nothing it could be considered that they are abdicating their rights to exclusive use. It would become public domain.

U guys have absolutely nothing to do but to discuss how and why they chose this name. What matters is what INSIDE this day care and how they treat kids, not what is outside. This is just advertisement and btw a one that is very well done.... People chose familiar names for their businesses b/c that is what makes it attractive to customers.. it is a well known fact and there is absolutely nothing wrong about it.

Den are you serious??? ”Blues Clues is registered without the ‘ ". That may be so but try explaining that to Nick Jr. ESPECIALLY when not only you took the name but the actual blues clues character. Good luck on your litigation dummy!

I have no idea why anyone would suggest jealousy, here.

One thing is for sure, none of us will be jealous when we get the following letter from the Nickelodeon headquarters: "To the new day care center: We represent the "green team" of producers, Todd Kessler, Angela Santomero, and Traci Paige Johnson, and we would like to know if you have received permission to use this insignia, otherwise we advise you to 'cease and desist' such usage. Sincerely, The Legal Dept at Nick, Jr."

Anger? Jealousy? Who? Everyone seemed pretty polite to me - we were just discussing a valid question. And like Den pointed out, such naming is not an unusual practice... but that doesn't mean it's always being done legally.
  • Den
lol......alright as long as you happy with it!Welcome to Blues Clues people!!!!
  • We've even been beaten with wet tea bags.
  • "neither Ned nor I nor anyone else can control what free thinking readers and commenters think and say"... No matter how hard we try...
  • @Den: How exactly is anything i wrote in my article angry or jealous? As for the comments, neither Ned nor I nor anyone else can control what free thinking readers and commenters think and say.
  • "Oh My God!!!!! Ned".... Why do I get blamed for everything? Let's blame Arthur for a change.
  • I don't see anger here. Nor jealously. Merely observation followed by comment.
  • Den
Oh My God!!!!! Ned , im really concerned about your site here!!!!! You guys seem to be really bored if you discussing other peoples business with such anger and jealousy!!!!! Wow i got my own site to advertise this site!!!!!!This is insane people! By the way, there are lots of day care centers in Brooklyn that have Nickolodeon or Disney names. One of the biggest ones is Bambi, and for your information"Blues Clues is registered without the ' ...... Do yourselves a favor , take a walk in the park instead of bragging .

I would be pleasantly surprised/impressed if this Day Care center lawfully licensed the Blues Clues name and image. My first impulse, like Lisanne, is generally to assume a trademark infringement - largely because such infringements happen quite often. I truly hope that's not the case here though.
  • Problem there is that the license holder often would like to have some assurance that the product or service won't turn out to be an embarrassment of some sort.

Way back when product licensing was a more casual practice. Lots of spurious products were manufactured through licensing arrangements. Many times these were set up by companies that got a commission and therefore were less than ethically responsible in their placements.

Some entities have, as a result, chosen to directly market their name exclusively to clients of their choosing.

There was an interesting case in Florida about 20 years ago where Disney forced the removal of murals from the interior of three daycare centers. As a response, both Hanna-Barbera and Universal gave the three centers permission to use their characters instead.

But naming is a convention that can imply an endorsement. So it has to be more carefully allowed.

OTOH, not following the current TV schedules or marketing trends it is possible that such use might be allowed when the saleability of the name has gone past its peak. Or they have contracts that have conditional clauses that would protect their interests.
  • Some of these franchises DO license out their image. For children's shows especially, licensing is how they make their money (day care centers, clothes, toys, books, etc). There's no reason to assume foul play without evidence.

The logo and insignia appear too well-drawn to be stolen. I wonder if the center didn't make some kind of agreement to lawfully use the Blue's Clues brand.
